Great video. You really put effort into pronunciation this time, I appreciate that. Fun fact: Dobó István is still revered as a local hero in Eger to this day. There's a statue of him and everything. There's also a stone engraved with the names of the dead, including their profession - the fact that there was even organisation to know the profession of everyone who died is amazing in and of itself, but also note how well Dobó used his men's specialties to their advantage, allowing them to practice the crafts they knew instead of just shooting and stabbing dudes.

When I lived in Hungary, Eger was a favorite destination of mine. Wonderful history, beautiful village and great museum. Also, Egri Bikavér is a must try for any visitor.

Yes, to all that, but here is another interesting tidbit of information. Does anyone know, that there is a striving Turkish-Hungarian Friendship Center exist in Eger, administered both by Hungarians and Turks living there? In addition Austria and Bavaria are counted among the true friends of Hungary also. Time has a way to heal even the deepest wounds, and thanks God for that.

Egri Csillagok (The Stars of Eger) - one of the best selling books in Hungary for the last few decades - tells the tale of the siege of Eger. They even made an epic movie off of it. It was the first castle sieging, epic battle type movie I saw as a child. So, this battle is a pretty big deal and very well known in Hungary. I am so hyped for this video!

​@@Walangord Dobó faught for Hungary not for Austria even though the countries western and northern part was occupied by the Habsburgs. Hungary did have a king (a child) and he was holding claims to all of the territories of the historical kingdom. The people who lived in the country was still hungarian. The people who faught at Eger were mainly hungarians with some minorities who had a hungarian affiliation (this was before nationalism born in the 19th century). The turkish wars killed 2/3 of the hungarian population. Mainly because the people had to pay taxes to their nobles, the church, the habsburgs the hungarian king and the turkish sultan too or the mix of these according to the place where they lived. But I'm sure as the big revolts and constant uprisings show us they never gave up their hungarian identity not even after the habsburgs completely take over. Austria was named Austria-Hungary for a reason not Austria-Chechia or Slovakia or Croatia. It was because Hungary never stopped fighting for it's rights and they just simply got tired of it and in 1867 they compromised with the hungarians.

As a Hungarian i grew up on the heroic stories of this age: many novels are written about this era which we had to read as "summertime reading" given out by schools, Géza Gárdonyi's The stars of Eger was even made into a 2 part TV movie. I believe the story of Master Gergő (Gergely Bornemissza) steered me towards engineering as a boy.

@@mastermindd That's what happened during the first invasion. For the seccond I'm afraid I disagree. Nogai Khan invaded specifically because it was a time of stability for the Mongols and there were no more civil wars going on among them. However Bela IV had made impressive military reforms, increasing his heavy cavalry and massively investing in stone castles. When the Mongols came back in 1285, invading in winter in a hope to surprize the Hungarians, they were unable to seize castles, and were worn down by attrition and harassment due to the Fabian tactics of the Hungarian. Both armies the Mongols had sent for their invasion were eventually exhausted. One was crushed in battle by the king, and the one led by the Khan was defeated by local Hungarian forces led by Roland Borsa. Almost the entire Mongol forced was either killed or captured. When a few years Later Mongols tried to invade Poland once more, Hungarian came to help the Polish people and the Mongols were severely defeated once again.

My favorite age is the period ranging from Andrew II to Loius the Great. But I also like the nomadic period, the battle of Pressburg was an epic feat, also in total winning more than 5 major battles against big European forces, something even the Mongols would have been proud of. Of course the emphasis is always put on the second battle of Lechfeld, because that defeat consolidated western Europe and led to the integration of Hungarians into Europe.

18:34 this last part perfectly gives the idea of how ferocious that battle was: contrary to the video on Vienna’s 1529 siege, this scene lets one imagine the defenders just collapsing from fatigue and breathing a long sigh of relief, all of them either wounded or exhausted. It’s a very difficult atmosphere to portrait, another great score of this channel. This is true history! An emotionless school-like speech doesn’t give neither justice to the past nor satisfaction to the listener: praise Kings and Generals for their great work!

@Bluss Wrong. Ottomans learned the existence of "cannons" from Ragusa near Adriatic sea (Prof. Halil İnalcık stated this clearly in his works). And initially bought from them. Serbians had artillery comparable to Ottomans during Kosovo (actually you can watch it in this channel) . Battle of Nicopolis did not have any large caliber gunpowder units on both sides to my knowledge. Ottomans had "Tüfengi" a lighter medium range, medium power firearm. The "musket" is invented in west. The "firearm" was invented in China. Abus gun is simply a lighter howitzer, which was already known and used in Europe in 1420s. Urban casted the guns. Until than guns of these calibres were not possible to cast. Urban had an idea how to make them.

The Ottomans could have mustered around 150k troops , but , with multiple enemies on all sides , it's safe to assume that there were more like 50 thousand troops in the offensive into Hungary . Besides , the central administrative district of the Ottoman empire was Constantinople and , therefore, many troops would be stationed there , so that they could quickly respond in case of an invading army .

@Gray Jedi It's possible the Ottomans did muster 150 thousand troops, but most of them likely weren't frontline troops. Support and logistics are very important for any march, and perhaps those soldiers were also counted in the Ottoman records. Of course, we don't know and won't, but it's a reasonable assumption to make.

I think Pargali Ibrahim was a very talented Pasha . I don't know about his commander abilities, but he was good 'politician'. Ottoman downfall started with Hürrem and incompetent Sultans.

Actually I think ottoman politics was the reason why they had bad pashas or generals. If you recruit generals only from the pre-janissary class and not from actual battle hardened corporals, you are going to end up with sophisticated generals that can't think outside the box and fail anytime something goes wrong. War is chaos and if you can't fight in chaos then you've already lost. Early ottoman padishahs governed troubled cities, in their youth, that neighboured their enemies which allowed them to become battle hardened generals. Later ottoman padishahs were locked up when they were young so they didn't learn much other than what scholars thought them just like the pashas.

For starters, Pressburg is the English translation of the city and this is an ENGLISH video. Hungarians, for instance, pronounce London utterly incorrectly, not to mention their way of calling the Thames 'Temze'. Be that as it may, everyone else - aside from you - embraces such historical diversity. Secondly, some of the terms are correct, being of Romanian/Slavic fountainhead, e.g. Timisoara, Hunedoara, and Kosice. In fact, 'Kossice' per se is tenfold more colloquial in English than 'Kassa'. Again, you are solely shedding crocodile tears. And lastly, why non-native speakers are constantly bashing English speakers for their inaccurate pronunciation or terms notwithstanding that they themselves speak English blatantly unwell is beyond me. This is the pot calling the kettle black.

They lost 24 castles to Ottomans easily and 25th resisted. Ottomans made the 25th siege, they were tired, also the weather helped. Of course there were a heroism but luck was also with them.

Thanks for the video. I've just learned that the education system is trying ti cover up a part of our history. I am an 18 year old hungaryan and my teachers never mentioned that the Habsbrgs besieged Buda. They only mention the part where the Ottomans captured it. There is 1 sentence about it in the book but, it basicli sais that we defeated the Habsburgs before any ottoman forces arived, and the teachers dont even mention it. PS: Eger was a large fortress, I've been there 2 times.

My favourite historical channel made a video of my favourite siege, its my lucky day! (When i was young i wanted to be Dobo Istvan, captain of Eger! :)) My younghood favourite book is from this twoo sieges and from the life of Bornemissza Gergely called “The stars of Eger” by Gardonyi Géza who lived for decades in the city to write this book. I recommend it for anyone who would like to know more from this period from the hungarian view. One little extra: Mekcsey - who was a very muscular noble and was under Dobós tutelage for ages before the siege - was the formal second in command in Eger, but Bornemissza was the “brain of the city” as Dobó called him, so in really he was the second in command during the siege.
