I know some people may be wondering why Emma couldn't defeat him even with the dark one's powers and her light magic, but you gotta realize, while Emma may have more power backing up her spells, she doesn't quite know or want to use the darkness to it's full potential, and on top of the fact that she's not going to be using all of the power available to her here, she's kinda got her wires crossed a bit, what with the fact that the dark one's powers are overshadowing her light magic, she's probably struggling right now just to make sure she's not tapping into the darkness, all of that paired off against the fact that Merlin was conscious inside that tree for a millennia or more, and he was the first one to even drink from the grail, and for thousands of years he was practicing before the dark one was even made, and even with a millennia of dark ones to guide her in this fight, who's she's not even gonna let out of the box in her mind, he's only managing to go against Arthur's influence just a little bit, he really had to strain himself to not kill Snow near the end, because he knew Emma could take it without him holding himself back as much

I don't think it rlly has a lot to do w that, dark ones gain insane amounts of knowledge when it comes to magic the moment they become the dark one, which is why after Emma lost her darkness, she was no longer rusty w magic nd could use it jus as good as characters like regina. Her dark one experience jus automatically gave her lots of knowledge to do w magic. Also I don't think she would hold back, most of the people she truly loved were going to die in this scene, I don't think she would hold back, cuz we know Emma is going to do whatever it takes to save her loved ones, she's done it before. Plus if she rlly was planning on not going all out, she would jus give the flame to begin with nd not even begin a fight. I think it was more to do w the fact that Merlin is jus simply much more powerful than Emma, nd he even mentions it when he says this is a fight she cannot win.

@@abdussamadfarooqi8803 true, she probably wouldn't wanna hold back at all considering it's her family, but my other point still stands, she has the powers of the dark one, which assuming it gives her the same raw power as merlin, but on top of that she has all her light powers, but if that's the case and she has more power backing her up, why didn't she stand a chance? For sure the fact that merlin has been around longer than any and all dark ones plays into it, but also the fact that if Emma goes all in, she goes all in on the darkness, and she still ends up losing them, even if they're not dead, so she's gonna hesitate on making the choice when it comes to going all out. Also, she can't effectively use the light inside her cause the darkness is actively trying to stop her from doing so, to try and make her rely more on her dark one powers.

The Savior's powers are light magic, the Dark One's are dark magic, and I believe that these two dissimilar essences are not really compatible. Yes her power does come from the holy grail like merlin's, but merlin has been doing this for much longer, he's more experienced than any dark one. I don't think u get the same level of power jus becuz u get drink from the grail, becuz merlin was chosen, not jus anyone could drink from the grail, but Nimue got her powers without any ability of being worthy, so I think that's why Merlin's power does exceed that of the dark ones. The only dark ones that are equal to or more powerful than merlin are dark hook nd ultimate dark one rumplestiltskin. Dark hook is equal to merlin cuz his powers r literally merlin's jus shifted into hook's body, nd rumple because he's basically one of the most powerful characters in ouat as of season 7.
