The bit in his backstory about how he was sold into slavery as a child explains SO MUCH about this. He spent his whole childhood being controlled, being nothing more than a piece of someone's property. He was powerless as Liam died. Once he declared his freedom, he was determined to be his own man. And then, centuries later, Rumpelstiltskin has his heart and he is back to where he started, being controlled. And Emma controlling him with Excalibur simply opened up all those wounds and pushed him over the edge.

In fairness Emma was born of light magic, true love, she was made to fight darkness, killian is over 200 years old and spent most of those years searching for revenge, not surprising that he couldn’t resist

Personally, I think he didn't like the idea of anyone controlling him which is why he chose the darkness over Emma. He must have a tick about being controlled. Maybe in his backstory, we can understand his motives better. I know that his dad will appear in upcoming episodes (maybe the next half of the season), so we will know why he clings to the darkness or why it took him centuries to change for the better, only to regress to his old patterns. And why does he want to raise the army of darkness?

+Nikka Rose I think his problem with being controlled happened in season four when Rumple took his heart and was constantly controlling him and making him do bad things like put all the fairies in the Hat and then tried to kill him.

This show really became a contradiction. Merlin and Nimue were the oldest. Older then the black fairy, so Nimue created it but the black fairy takes the credit when she's far younger then even Nimue.

The black fairy has managed to last much longer due to the time dilation effects of her realm, Gideon was only gone for a not even a week when he came back as a 20 something year old man, the dark fairy has probably spent on the order of thousands of years in the 300 years it's been since she gave birth to Rumple, meanwhile, there's only been 1000 years of dark ones, Rumple for 300 of them, with so many dark ones in between him and Nimue, to put it simply, none of the dark ones ever lived long enough to delve as deep as Fiona did

Hook was a good villain but the writers catered to CSERS who wanted their great couple. She made him a dark one he intentionally killed Merlin. Then he gets a pass. Because Emma thinks he’s her twue love. He could have been redeemed in death afterlife like Neal. Then Emma could have naturally moved on to maybe August or the mad hatter? But producers just wanted to make CSers happy. They didn’t care about other Shippers or fans. That just wanted a good story. If that would have happened OUAT might if had a few more Good seasons in stead of the trash that was season 5,6, & 7!
