When I was in my early 20s, I found myself in a somewhat similar situation in Mission Bay in San Diego. The Coast Guard guy said he couldn't tow me off of the sandbar and would have to call a commercial company to do it. I asked if he could just take my anchor out about 100 feet and just drop it for me. He said "Sure". I connected the anchor to the jib halyard and he dropped it about 100' away. I winched it until my 30' sailboat heeled over enough to lift me up and off of the sand bar so I could motor to deeper water. I was so proud of myself. :-)

Great episode. I agree, the ICW is tricky as sandbars seem to grow over night. Love the editing and music. We never had an autopilot when I delivered boats on my vacations from the US Merchant Marine Service. Enjoy and can't wait for the next episode. Thanks again, you both look so happy!

Hey I have had three boats and all three have grounded but never at any speed. There are three types of captains there those that have run aground, those too new to have run aground and those that lie. I know your boat is fairly shallow keel but you may have benefitted like we did with the surface area of the side of the boat making it more buoyant when the tide dropped we used our tender to pull the mast over to port or starboard (to give a direction) while the tow boat then had a much easier workload to pull it forward and out. Twice I was grounded because this silly moon thing moved and 6m became 4m. Pish who would have known that would have happened let alone the chance of the moon thing happening more than once!! I also converted to a Hydraulic steering and auto pilot two boats had it and the last didn't, it was the safety after almost loosing my hand when my glove caught in the chain and the rudder moved with a wave just before a gear I was not even working on it but something else! A manual hydraulic pump attached to the wheel and a power over hydraulic one for the auto pilot two different ram's so if a ram failed I could just close a couple of valves and open the other two and have both on the one ram there were also two bypass solenoids but you could use a valve for reliability and less electronics. Also made it far easier to not have pulleys, gears, brass bushings and frozen chain links trying to throw the chain every rough passage. A stretched chain and worn sprocket is worse to replace than a hydraulic line just have a low battery warning on the power system running electric pump for the auto pilot and possibly don't have it on the same power systems as other safety thinks like Engine Start, Bilge pumps and smoke alarms as when in rough weather it works hard and can use the battery!

Just stumbled upon you guys - you are such fun! Also have to ask r u a bit insane? That steel sailing yacht is HUGE with so much cool stuff you are adding. Am envious of your great engine room. I recently coveted a 45' steel sailing yacht designed by Ted Hood, but it was snapped up before I had enough greenbacks to send its way. Looking forward to watching you on your adventures - Dr. Mac PS: Have you thought about how to deal with condensation that is typical in steel boats? If so, can you pass on some wisdom on how to keep things dry, below?

Here is something I have done. Drop the dingy. Slowly lower the anchor in the dingy. Take the anchor and chain out away from the boat. Return in the dingy and pull using the windlass and engine. As long as I'm floating level and in mud or sand it has worked.

Well, if you have never run aground, especially in inland waters, you have not sailed long enough. As a commercial fisherman here in Denmark, my first skipper wanted to cut a short cut from the North Sea fishing ground to the more mild East at winter, through a long fjord with very shallow water in places and also ever moving sand banks in places. He of course wanted me to take the wheel in that worst place and take a nap and I just said NO! 5 minutes later we hit the sand bank and he spend the next couple of ours sailing from sand bank to sand bank essentially, until one of the other boats from same harbor on the West coast finally reached us, with a more current map onboard, and lead us out of that place. Otherwise we would probably still be in that maze.

Welcome back. Just a thought, could you have waited for the tide to float you off the sandbar?
@DawnHunters
@DawnHunters Жыл бұрын
The tide does help but our vessel is 45 tons. When she hits ground the tide could very well take us off and into a second higher sand bar. See the ICW currents flow into shoals 50% of the time. Then we would not be able to continue in the dark and anchor spots very far in between.

Hey and thanks for the comment. Actually by liability restrictions cant even have the engine on plus even if i could would not as engine will pull in sand and plug the sea straining system. Once free then can turn on the engine and follow. This is a 55 ton vessel so she does not stop or fight strong currents well. Needless to say the tow Capt is always correct no matter what the issue.
