I always perceived “how’s the family, how’s your health been, how’s the church, how’s the job, fancy seeing you here, time went off again, beautiful weather today’ as an annotation of the everyday brief conversations you have with people to pass time. Idk how to explain it. Just the same old questions being thrown around day to day

I saw the band Ought at a concert this past Friday, August 18th and discovered that they have turned the ordinary process of becoming a professional musician/artist/artisan/writer/actor/performer, etc... (i.e. study the craft, practice, receive instruction, practice some more, gain proficiency, develop an unique perspective, then become professional) on its head. Here's the likely conversation that started off this band, featuring Tim Darcy (vocals, guitar), Ben Stidworthy (bass guitar), and Matt May (keyboards). Timmy-Timmy Darcy: Boys! Boys! I have a FABULOUS! idea! Now that we have instruments, let's start a band, start touring, and become ROCK STARS! Ben Stidworthy: Uhhh, Timmy-Timmy, we've only had a few lessons and have been playing for only a few months. We'd need to practice for years and learn how to play. You can't even play Smoke on the Water yet. Matt May: Yeah, Benny's right. I can sorta play Jingle Bells and Chopsticks, but that's about it. Sorry Timmy-Timmy, but we're about a million miles away from being good enough to become rock stars. Do you even know the difference between a note and a chord? You can't be a rock star if you can only play one or two chords. Timmy-Timmy: Ooooh Matty! [pouts and whines] - you don't know anything! This is the year 2011! You don't need to know how to play instruments to be a rock star! The Black Keys have plenty of two-chord songs and even a one-chord song on El Camino, and they sold millions of albums! What about Maroon 5? They play the same couple of three or four chord rhythms for all of their songs, just spent a few minutes coming up with some catchy vocal harmonies, and they're the biggest rock band in the world! I'm tall and svelte just like Adam Levine, and I think I'm prettier! Ben: Uhhhhm...... Timmy-Timmy: And boys! I have been practicing MY MOVES! I have spent hundreds of hours in front of a mirror grooving, and dancing and vamping! I can look so DREAMY! and deep, you'd just cry if you saw all my MOVES! And have you seen what BEAUTIFUL skin I have? I don't even have a beard yet! I probably won't need to shave until I'm some really old, middle-aged dude, like when I'm 31! Sometimes when I look in the mirror I get so pretty, I just start to sob! Matt: Well, he does walk with a sexier sway than my girlfriend. Ben: And he really is prettier than the last two girls I dated. Matt: You know that guy Tim Keen? I hear he's a pretty good drummer and he's been in a band before - maybe if we could get him to play with us, we could actually do this. If we have one person who knows how to play, maybe we can fool people into thinking we're a real band. Timmy-Timmy: I don't know about that. I'm the only one who can be called Timmy-Timmy! I'm the Real Timmy-Tiimmy! Ben: Ok, no problem, we'll just call him something else. ...... And thus Ought was born. ======================== It is very clear that those who are fans of this band have absolutely no knowledge of music, whatsoever. I have seen well over 400 guitar-oriented blues and rock acts in the past four decades, and dozens more concerts of various other types of music from bluegrass to classical to jazz. I have seen a few groups that were more off-key (probably because they were blitzed out of their minds) but never once have I seen any group who so obviously did not know how to play their instruments. This summer I saw a high school alt-rock/punk band that averaged about 14 years of age. The 15 year-old girl who was the band's lead guitarist, had exponentially more talent playing a cheap Ibanez clone than pretty-boy Timmy Darcy had playing his sweet Telecaster - honestly, it would be like comparing a mediocre Pop Warner player with a decent Division III starting player. When I saw Ought warm up for The New Pornographers (themselves not possessing an overabundance of talent, notwithstanding their several heavily-played radio hits), my buddy and I turned to each other and we both exclaimed something to the effect of "These guys don't actually know how to play." We both commented that the band's pretty-boy face did not seem to know how to string together more than two chords per song. There were a couple of vapid teenagers there who were jumping around dancing (to what, I'm not sure), but for those of the audience who were actually paying attention, more of them had a puzzled or bored look to their faces. We started talking with some guys who were well into their 30s and they too, were amazed that no one in this band other than the drummer seemed to have a clue about what to do with their instruments - they also noticed all the one or two-chord songs and the fact that Tim Darcy seemed a hell of a lot more into his style than his music. While I don't think that Ought will ever become a household name, I think they are a very clear-cut example of what has gone wrong with music over the past 10 to 15 years. With the rise of the singing contest reality TV shows like American Idol and The Voice, control of the music industry seems to have shifted from a focus on the 15-30 male demographic to the 12-40 female demographic. Most women and girls these days like hearing a pretty voice and want a pretty face to go with that voice. They don't give a rat's arse about musicianship, unless the musician is on a reality TV show and is a child prodigy. And much of the younger male demographic is now viewed as being fans of hip-hop, which is also not a source of musicianship, where simplistic rhyming, angry gesticulating, plagiaristic sampling, and brash misogynistic boasting takes the place of artistry, genuine creativity, and skill . So what has happened to rock as a genre? It has died. I'll prove this by suggesting a comparison of a laughed-at pop band from decades past to what passes nowadays as a "rock" superstar group. What was the most ridiculed band of the 80's? It would have to be Flock of Seagulls, wouldn't it? Let's take their two most famous songs, I Ran (So Far Away) and Space Age Love Song, and compare them to the two most up-tempo, "rocking" Maroon 5 songs you care to name. What will we find? Yep, that band of Brit-pop doofuses with the ridiculous hair have much more complex, aggressive and interesting guitar passages (i.e. solos, something that is altogether absent from the music of the so-called biggest "rock" band in the world nowadays) than Adam Levine and company, ones that display vastly more musical talent than that guy who plays "lead" guitar in Levine's band (whatever his name is - he's completely interchangeable with any of hundreds or thousands of other guys who mail-in their rhythm guitar performances). Honestly, go do a google search for some karaoke versions of Maroon 5 songs - you'll hear the same 3 or 4-chord background rhythms on all their songs and it will be hard to tell them apart - their songs have vocal harmonies, but no tunes. Sure, Adam Levine is one of the most charismatic individuals and financially successful entertainers on the planet, but let's be honest, if no one had ever heard of him, none of the judges on his show would turn their chairs for his singing. I'm sure Ought would cite to Velvet Underground and other artsy-dull bands that poseur/wannabe types always claim as influences, all those guys really want to do is be Maroon 5. Tim Darcy, to do that, you'll need to learn one or two more chords per song. And come up with some slightly catchier hooks and harmonies. So you'd basically have to double your musical repertoire. Given how simplistic and limited your skills as musicians are, it wouldn't actually take a whole lot more to be twice the group you are now. Go get some lessons with talented music teachers and I bet you'd be able to double or triple the complexity of your music in just a week or two.

"your old and irrelevant lol [sic]" Little boy, be polite or I'll have your mommy take her iPhone back and then no internet for you. Learn something about music and you'll see that my comments that the members of Ought are talentless are completely accurate. Learn something about grammar and you won't post comments that look like they were typed by an 8 year-old who repeated first grade twice. Grow up a bit and you will realize that guys don't use phrases like "LOL" - you sound like a pre-teen girl or a spinster cat lady.
