I forgot something in the video. SNCF with Ouigo ES and its business model (Mix between TGV Inoui and Ouigo) is now in competition with the classic AVE and at the same time the AVLO. "Kill two birds with one stone!" In my opinion that's a great move from SNCF.

I thinkit's a great movement. In Spain Ave is seems as expensive and classy, but Oigo movement is about getting people who wants travel can afford it, but feels not welcomed at AVE. And now you can go for a weekend in a very and cheap way. I'm really expected about tranitalia (which Italy's train are amazing and affordable)

External companies operating for profit the Spanish most popular lines will disrupt their country railways in a way that the Spanish people could be out of pocket by the billions. Their system was designed so the profitable lines would subsidise the rest (Renfe), but now that option won't be available and I bet most of the country newly built HS lines won't be profitable. Yet they were built by Adif issuing public debt. I wish to be wrong on this, but I might not be.

@@sapede the train prices were so high that people continued flying between Madrid and Barcelona just because of the price. If they manage to significantly increase the number of train passengers on the line, they may make even more money than they did before with the expensive prices

@@sapede (Un)fortunately, that’s not the case. And there’s a clear example to point it out. In 2013, Italy opened its high speed railways to competition, with a new company called NTV (Italo) entering service. 2 years before, in 2011, Trenitalia (the national operator) transported 25 million passengers across HS lines. In 2015 that figure had risen to 55 million, for a combined 64 million (9mill from NTV). So not only did passenger numbers more than double in just a few years, but the national operator doubled its passengers as well. Outcome? HS lines were popularised and average ticket prices dropped 40%.
@sapede
@sapede 3 жыл бұрын
@@CityWhisperer That's really good. Unfortunately only applies to lines where there's population at destination, which might not necesarily be case with many of the Spanish lines. If only 900 people (of old age) live at the destination as it is for instance in Tardienta, you may double passengers to 3 everyday from the current average of 1.5 passengers/day (Should the low cost operator be willing to take a train there). You may attempt to estimate the real cost of that journey without any subsidies.
@CityWhisperer
@CityWhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
@@sapede Yes, when high speed lines where opened, part of the project was to give "access" to high speed railways to underpopulated or rural areas. Not only to serve the town after which they are named, but the entire province. On another note, and unfortunately for your argument, long distance services don't recieve subsidies in Spain. AVE, Alvia, Trenhotel (now discontinued apparently) and similar services which serve long distance routes don't recieve public money, meaning that they either need to be profitable or their cost needs to be covered somehow. And in many cases, it's the money Renfe earns with AVE services (the only profitable one) that can be used to do that.

Great video and interesting competition with a positive influence on price. But I don't think that complete liberalisation of train service should be the target. When looking back at last year, one can highly appreciate the state owned companies still being in service where all private companies on high speed rail reduced their schedule. In Germany, Flix train was even fully out of service due to "lack of demand". Therefore those operators should be seen complementary instead of seeing them as the future of train service.
@CityWhisperer

Congrats for the great video Simply Railway! But I've to say a few things, just to make it clear enough. I've to say that it is quite shameful for SNCF that they're taking any type of pride of operating in Spain with no problems at all because of ADIF's clear and fair process of homologating and testing train precedure. Meanwhile they're puttling too many complicated rules and steps so that no other operators can run their trains in France. That's not fair. Neither Renfe or Trenitalia are baing able to pperate their trains on the LGV's because SNCF Réseau's questionable "policies". No one is capable to undersatand hoy a Frecciarrossa 1000 or an AVE S-100 is not allowed to operate on the LGV Est (specially the AVE S-100) when Alstom in this case has built and designed this train in a very simillar way as other TGV's that are actually able to run with any problems. Alstom has been working with Renfe for many years to make this train run anywhere in France and they can't figure out how to make the S-100 work on that particulate LGV, and this is well known by train enthusiasts that there must be something going on with SNCF's "corrupt" decisions, not with the rolling stock itself. If SNCF wants to take pride of how good their business is, and how good Ouigo and other products are, thery have to be fair and clear and allow other operators in the HST market in France so they can show that they're better or whatever they want. It's about all having the same chances and opportunities. Cheers!

Renfe is even not able to launch a railway company on their own market. And now is trying to go on French rails with 30 years old trains and is surprised to be declined, that’s funny. It is not corruption, just a fair policy.

@@guillaumedu971 Well those trains have been allowed to run in certain parts of the French network for almost 10 years now. But somehow not in the LGV Est. Also, for the record SNCF has some trains that are older than the S-100 and they can run without any issues whatsoever. Also...how is it possible that the ETR-1000 and other models that are "not 30 years old like u say"(Bombardier Zefiro) had to wait almost 10 years to be able to run in France? And these two are just an example. We'll see what happens with the Talgo Avril. There is just one word to define SNCF Reseau's policies: "corrupt". The spanish minister of transportation has asked the french government to investigate this and the European commission to open un an investigation, but I'm not sure if it's going to help. Just yo be clear one more time: it doesn't matter how old the train is as long as it meets all the technical, safety and security requierments. I'd recommend you to get informed about this situation instead of saying things that make no sense in any way.

@@mauroizquierdo9544 Trenitalia is authorized to operate in France: www.autorite-transports.fr/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/notification-thello-trafic-international-avec-desserte-interieure.pdf Probably with the covid and the last year accident in Italy they preferred to take more time. Not to mention that such as in France, they are not operating in Spain currently. I understand that safety and security requirements are not an easy deal for non-French companies but on the other hand, with open-access model, the French market is easier and less risky than other markets. SNCF is the only company that is taking the risk to operate on a new market during the pandemic, with modern Euroduplex trains and a totally new business model. SNCF invested €600m in Spain, how much have been invested in France by other companies? - Also I invite you to visit SNCF Réseau website: www.sncf-reseau.com/en And read the DRR: www.sncf-reseau.com/sites/default/files/2021-01/Document%20principal%20-%20DRR%202022%20V1_EN.pdf

@@guillaumedu971 I perfectly know that Trenitalia can now operate in France, and my critique said that it took them too long to get the certificate for no reason, and that's the pure and honest truth. Also, I've been reading and getting informed about SNCF Reseau's policies, and I cannot find a reason why Alstom that has built hundreds of TGV's for SNCF can't figure out how one of their variants (AVE S-100) can't run on a particular railway. It's all bullshit and you have got to admit that, even if you support SNCF as an operator. And last but not least, if you say that SNCF is risking so much money in new marketd with a "new business model" that isn't really new because it's a copied model from the airline industry, you also have got to allow other operators to run their trains do they can invest money on other countries as well! Renfe wants to operate in France and offer a new business model and SNCF Reseau is not allowing them. It's a shame.

The competition has begun; in first week Ouigo carried more average pepole with 5 services in each direction, when Renfe has more than double services in each direction. It's a change or it's curiosity for new things? We'll see. Capacity; a french Duplex in normal configuration (First or XL and second classes) can carry about 27-29% more pepole than a S-103 Velaro, the mainforce on Barcelona - Madrid HSL. In Renfe, only the new Avril's by Talgo will carry more pepole on a trainset than Velaros. Before Ouigo, train has catched a bit more than a half passengers in Barcelona - Madrid travel. Plane travel between the cities is still demanded, for connections and for some business (convention center is much closer to the airport than Puerta de Atocha station) The toll for using the infraestructure is calculated in a basis of the route, stations served and services offered. There is discussion for changing the toll schema, and one of the proposals take into account the capacity of the trains. Sorry if it has been bit long.

Such a kind of competition destroys railway business! Different operators on the same line make the timetable and the pricing complicate for customers and they make an appropriat use of infrastucture impossible. Customers exept their tickets and their travelcards to be valid on every train, so they have maximal flexibility. Indeed low prices are needed, but competition is not the way to go. Countries like Belgium or Switzerland, without competition and with one single ticketing system for all public transport operaors, have the highest railway ridership because of its simplicity and reliability. Meanwhile, people in UK startet avoiding trains as soon as they startet competition.

I was/have been living in Germany and Switzerland and must say that it's a shame how retarded and obsolete most trains and tracks are in these countries, compared to the huge progress that has been made regarding high speed tracks and trains in both France and Spain during the last decades. The French and Spanish have built several thousands of kilometers of high speed tracks, not only a few dozen or hundred. And the landscape profile and distance of cities is no adequate excuse for the lack of this in Germany and Switzerland. German DB (with ICE trains but little high speed track) and Switzerland (only two Alp tunnels, Lötschberg and Gotthard) should really think over their overall strategy. Just an example: it takes a full 3 hours to get from Zurich to Stuttgart (about 220 kilometers). The video here shows that it takes less time (2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 52 minutes) for the 630 kilometers distance between Barcelona and Madrid. Similar for Paris - Marseille (750 kilometers) in about 3 hours. The discrepancy in travelling is huge.

@olivieronrails
@olivieronrails 3 жыл бұрын
The difference in power consumption between 300 and 360kmh is huge, maintenance costs will also be higher if vmax is higher. All this to save a few minutes on a 2h route, not worth it from an economical perspective, either in France, Germany or Spain. In Japan, 280/300kmh is still the norm on scheduled Shinkansen service. In China they reach 350kmh but they have a special case with very long distances (4hrs+ at 350) and an even tougher domestic airline competition. And then there are Maglev trains but it's an all different story altogether. I think we will be stuck with 300/320 maybe 330 for the next decade at least, in Europe, which serve its purpose just fine.

Completely disagree with the liberalisation of rail markets. It's turning the railways in to airlines. All it is doing is fragmenting the market, and will lead to a poorer service on the lines that don't make money. What happens when your local train misses the connection with the Lo-cost carrier? New ticket time. €€€ Foreign trains in a different country isn't new. Trains ran successfully across European borders for decades. Orient Express? A cheap turn-up-and-go service for all, with co-ordinated connections. That's a much more passenger friendly operation.

I hope so, the cost in money (many from aids from the EU) was astonishing for the AVE and his costly terminals. Not to mention the stations in the middle of nowhere made in the 2000s era because for political reasons (votes) everybody in Spain wanted a high speed conection. Now on the long run we will see how it will cost to RENFE to operate all those lines and to try to operate the intercity and regional ones. I'm not optimistic...

The decision not to have a "high capacity" train is more to do with the product itself not being really "low-cost". In France, Ouigo has inOui services backing it up, so the more 'luxurious' product is with inOui while Ouigo goes with the lower class. And in order not to steal passengers from inOui, they make Ouigo non-attractive on purpose. But as there's no inOui backing them up in Spain, they've had to upgrade their product, but apparently the prices are the same. So that's good!

Tbf, I also think it's to do with the base costs of it as well. I think OuiGo didn't want to risk failing in Spain AND spend a large amount doing so, so the upfront cost of refurbing all the trains into the "Higher Capacity" style would've likely been too much for them. Although, nowadays, it seems that OuiGo ES is doing amazingly

@@timnewman1172 There is endless political reasons behind why we have next to nothing regards to transit in the US sadly. That list is extensive and long since deeply engrained into the history, culture and mindsets of people here too, keeping us enchained to our sheer lack of it. The big fossil fuel and vehicle industry is the most prominent controlling interests that got us where we are and are constantly trying to shut down things like Brightline. It's sad. And, all the more reason that government avoids infrastructure renewal, changes, funding and investments, in the more general political aspects of it all. There are too many grade crossings in the US, and too many car/train collisions at those crossings. Plus the freight lines own nearly all of the rail lines passenger trains currently use. In my area (suburban Chicago), they've been converting grade crossings to underpasses, not so much to facilitate passenger trains as freight travel. But those infrastructure improvements will hopefully jump-start the conversation about high-speed rail.

Not sure about train services within any nation run by foreign train company. Long term, this would kill off local train services and very few lines would be kept open. Better approach is to keep services within each nation to the national operator of each nation. But allow foreign competitions for cross-border services. This would add many more services across borders and would be much more convenient for customers who would not need to change trains after crossing border each time. Only if Australia has proper long distance services let alone high speed type. Typical English-speaking-nation's mentality in regard to rail services . Lol
