In context with the recommendations to new gardeners, I would suggest a “Keeping it Simple” guidance. It’s so easy to get swooned by all the varieties (even experienced gardeners do) and purchase more than your garden and you can handle. I think part of the struggle new gardeners is due to over planting and too much variety makes it more difficult to learn what works and what doesn’t. Learn the basics first, then expand on that knowledge. My 2 cents.....

@@gardeningwithhoss i would like to see "small gardener" seed packs to include variety of different types. For example, one lettuce variety to include Tehama, red salad bowl, romaine, Cherokee etc. That way you don't have to buy 4 seed packs that will most likely expire by the time you plant a little of each variety. This would add variety to your plate. Another example could be HOSS Kale variety seed pack with would include the varieties that Greg and Travis grow in one small seed pack. I have about 250 sf growing space in my garden and live in the suburbs. I don't have"plots" of land that are 100 sf.

I have been growing vegetables about 6 years in zone 7b (central AL), but only in the past few year has my success been notable. One problem I have encountered is finding the right advice and seed selection for the deep south. Hoss tools has been a great source of information, seeds and growing supplies. And the delivery speed is amazing. I credit much of my success and enjoyment to y'all. Even when things go bad, as from time to time they inevitably will, I can deal with it so much better because I have seen by your example on how to face it. It’s time. 👏🏼👏🏼 Today I Finally spotted a couple baby heads on my broccoli and cauliflower. Whew, finally 😍 Happy NYE ya’ll Also, I got some “Shirley Hammond” multiplier onions from Baker creek. Started them sometime in August I think. They are doing well, but I really didn’t know when to plant them, we’ll see. We have mild winters, not even a freeze yet here. So hopefully I’ll have some multiples that I can replant after seeing how Greg did with his. Speaking of seeds, I’m a new gardener been buying seeds like crazy since April 2020. I have noticed that the seed prices have gone up a little or stayed the same. But one thing I have noticed when pulling out my seeds over the last week. Seeds packed for 2020 have about twice the amount of seeds per packet to those packed for 2021. That is what I have noticed

You fellas provide a great service and as a fairly new gardener, I appreciate it. I can see how you offer an excellent product and go above and beyond to help your customers be successful with it - shows like this as an example. Now that's integrity and pride in what you do. As far as the cost of seeds goes, I'd rather spend a little more on something that's going to perform better and put more food on my table and in my pantry. And heck yeah, more Gardening with Greg! Now a question: Seeing how seeds are likely to become scarcer than normal this year, how long would you say you can keep your seeds? And what is the best way to do it?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Most seeds will keep for at least a few years in the fridge. Some crops, like onions and peas, don't hold their germination rates as well from year to year.

Well, not sure I completely agree on quantity of seed in a packet, over the years I've purchased from a variety of seed companies. But I do believe the quality of seed that I've received from Hoss Tools has been superior. In 95% of the cases I've had really good germination (part of that comes from education I receive here on Thursday evenings). There have been a couple of items that I've struggled with, but it's probably more a knowledge deficit as I branch out into things I know nothing about growing than with the seed. I completely agree with the value comparison... although turning that potential into actual food requires lots of ongoing effort (at least for me). I learn something every week, and I tell at least a couple of people every month when they ask how I do it... that they need to invest Thursday evening (and maybe a couple rainy weekends) into some older video's, take notes (I have a Hoss Knowledge Binder) that I can refer to... stop watching television: who needs to watch a bunch of people they nothing in common with playing with all kinds of stupid balls, or driving around and around in circles... go outside and start a garden. Well actually I encourage them to grown way more than a garden... they need fruit and nut trees as well in my not so humble opinion. Everyone needs their own small scale food forest (whatever is appropriate for their climate). We all need to be in a much better position to supplement out diet with fresh foods from our backyards. I grow what I can, and share it with others, to hopefully inspire them to do the same. Not trying to put Kroger / Publix out of business, but I am suggesting you don't depend on them for 100% of your ability to feed your family. Hopefully tomorrow (well realistically next weekend) I hope to finish my first high tunnel... putting up the end walls is proving a challenge for me. I'm hoping to cheat old man winter just a bit on both ends of his existence. :) I think you guys should create some playlist that string together content on individual topics (potatoes, carrots, greens, etc). I know all your stuff is still on line... maybe just create an index with links to video's... to make it easier to locate. At this point someone just finding you guys... there is a lot of stuff to catch up on. It could be difficult to "catch up". White Acre Peas are to die for... grown more of that in my life than anything else... and if you ever let the bugs get in them, you can just write it of and come back in the fall. I would say don't grow field peas on double rows... since you taught me that, I've been doing a lot of double rows of things... but I've found the pest pressure to be extremely high in double rows of peas. They need to breath more than double rows allow in my opinion.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Maybe that was part of my problem with the field peas. I always planted them on double rows, and it is indeed more difficult to get full foliage coverage when spraying double rows.

What are the options in tools for deep ripping soil to loosen it up and to mix with some subsoil, say to 1 foot depth? is a pickaxe the only option? I think new and even experienced gardeners get overwhelmed by too much mis-information out there about everything, including layout, fertilization and upkeep. Hoss Tools videos have taught me the important things to do, rather than wasting time making compost or crazy brews. It's not that easy to source market garden style hardware here down under but can be done. use it time and again and it works; rather than silly stuff that ends up being more things for garbage bin. It is all too easy to become distracted by mis-information and waste time doing everything else but growing veggies, which is all i care about. thanks heaps.

Sounds like you're talking about a chisel plow or a turning plow. Those work great when developing new gardens, but require a decent tractor to pull them.

OP varieties vs hybrid on cost...can you follow the money? Producers get to charge more for the hybrids? Im asking cause I don’t know. As for “value” of seeds...I really don’t garden for the value of the food I grow,. Lord knows my tomatoes, cost probably about $100/lb. Seeds, seed trays, soil mix, fertilizer, compost, hoes, rakes, tillers, drip tape, then add in time to baby set seedlings, weeding, bug killing, picking, canning, it goes on and on. I garden because I just like to be in the garden working. It’s good for me. My wife gets mad cause I may not use everything I grew. I tell her if I grow a good crop of whatever and the squirrels, deer, drought, rain, whatever eats it or ruins everything, I was still successful, cause I got to be in the garden.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Hybrids cost more to produce, and the R&D used to develop them is a part of that increased cost that suppliers and the end customer experience. Any time in the garden is a good time! Happy New Year!

Cover crop question: Our live oak trees will be shedding leaves soon and I always collect a very large quantity for composting. I process them through my shredder. My composting problem has always been not having a large enough available and inexpensive nitrogen source to mix with all the carbon materials which are abundant. So could a cold weather cover crop serve that purpose? Which one would be best for that application? Other alternatives? manures are not generally available and I’m concerned about possible Grazon impact.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
I think some Frosty Berseem Clover could help to potentially solve that problem.

Hello. I live in MI and want to establish an indoor garden for the winter. I am thinking the Bella Rosa for an indoor tomato plant. I grew it last year in my garden and was happy with the results outside. It was compact and set many fruit, so I thought it would be a good candidate inside. What do you guys think, do you agree? I also plan to grow salad greens, kale, green onions, and maybe a cucumber plant. Greens to also supplement my chicken and ducks diet so I need the quickest growing green leafy plants. I’d be interested in recommendations. I realize I’m late getting started this year but it is a plan evolving. Thanks so much!

Never grown it indoors, but it would certainly do just as well as any other variety you could try.

I'm not going to lie. I go for the cheap seeds first. I have not noticed much difference in performance. Now I am a small gardener, its almost a play thing. I will tell you, if I had to garden to eat and that was the only way to get my food. Hoss seeds would be the seeds for I would go for first. The price wouldn't matter that much in truth. Janice

I’ve got the arch building down but I can’t grow butter beans (Lima beans, right?) to save my life! Early, mid season, late, I can never get a good stand going and the few that I hobble along never seem to make very many at once, and if I wait too long on a few to try to get a handful the older ones pods split wide open! Help! I’m in Atlanta so if you post about what you’re doing, I’ll have about two weeks to watch it and be ready to go with mine!

Beans will start to drop blooms when it gets too hot. So planting early is important.

Why not grow winter squash in a raised bed? Not enough space for root growth?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
They tend to sprawl and the vines can easily run 10-20' for some varieties. So they just require a good bit more space than a traditional raised bed can provide.

2020 really showed its ugly face. Not only with the "pandemic" but man did we get get a ton of rain here in south florida 😓 down pour after down pour every day. I put some compost on i dont know maybe like aug or sep thinking itd be fine and watched it all wash away. So what im doing for the new year is building semi raised beds out of 2x4s, nothing big and fancy just need it to block any more rain from washing it all out. Another plus is that it should help me with better crop rotation. Thats kinda a new years resolution i got along with wanting to actually getting a big garden harvest. Have yet to have one like i dream of. Ima stop wasting my money though on other seed companies and just start buying from yall from now on 😂

Hey Travis I watched your video that you made Kale soup and went to the Garden and gathered up some stuff to make some myself the rabbits have helped me thin out my blue kale so I cut some cabbage cauliflower and broccoli greens chopped them up and used the last of our potatoes and it was awesome thanks for the recipe. :) And a quick question or request could you put the maximum days to germination on the seed packets? I know it can vary with the conditions ie bottom heat moisture etc... but how long should we wait before we retry and figure out what we have done wrong.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
That can vary greatly depending on whether you're starting them in seed trays or direct seeding outdoors. But most things should germ within 7 days if the soil temp is correct for that particular crop.

You'll want to put those in the ground after your last frost date. So take your average last frost date, count back about 6-7 weeks, and that's when you should start them.

What is the difference between sweet corn, popcorn and dent corn? Do you have to grow a popcorn variety to get popcorn or can you pop any type of corn?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
If you want popcorn, you have to grow popcorn. Sweet corn is like you would use for corn on the cob or creamed corn. Field corn is traditionally used for making grits and corn meal, or feeding to livestock. Although some folks do enjoy the taste of field corn when it is picked early.

Wouldn't inoculation of your legumes reduce the amount fertilizer you would need to give to the plant because it pulls it's nitrogen from the atmosphere. Just give them P and K because they provide their own N. If I'm wrong, let me know. Thanks.

We don't typically fertilize legumes much anyways, but you're right.
