For a baby boa, this setup is a more appropriate than a glass tank and screen top. Well done! You might find that during cold weather, the heat will not rise up through the substrate layer you have. You may want to use less depth over the heated area if that is the case. I have that problem in my location, the room is chilly in Winter. I finally bought an oil-filled radiator heater to help in Winter, works pretty well.

I have since made adjustments and even upgraded to a bigger tub since this video. But, yes, I do have another heat source for the winter months. She is about ready for another upgrade. Always growing.

Emily Shumate Glad you liked it! I did a lot of research and found the tub to be the best option to keep up humidity and ambient temps. Not to mention, cost saving for this fast growing, large species of snake. Our girl is just about ready for an upgrade.

Eco earth is bad, i used it and after i wet it 2 days later it had mold, coco husk is better or just go with paper towels for a very clean environment and they hold humidity great

We quit using eco earth. I did any update video when I upgraded her tub. Eco Earth is ok in a more ventilated enclosure. We have found it doesn’t work well in the enclosed tubs because, yes, it does create mold. We do use coconut husk now, but never paper towels unless it is a quarantine situation. I have seen too many instances of accidental ingestion. We currently use paper towels for our sick rescue blood python and always feed her on a clean surface.

I bought the same thermostat you are using here. Did this thermostat work well for you or did you have to replace it eventually?

They don’t last but a year if your lucky. I mostly use a temp gun now and rely on my thermostats.

The thermostat is still working great, but I now use herpstat thermostats as my go to for my reptiles. They are a bit pricey but well worth it.

did you stick the prob with tape on the inside? did you pass it through a hole?

Yes, I drilled a small hole on the side just big enough for the probe to fit and secured it to the bottom where the snake would actually be.

Even with a thermostat, isn't there a risk of the heat mat melting the plastic tub?

Your heat mat should not be exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so NO. There is no risk of it melting the tub. The temperature would need to considerably hotter for the plastic to start melting. Most baby/ juvenile snakes should be fine with this set up. I would not recommend this for lizards that require a warmer basking spot and an UV light. Consider this: the inside of a car can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit on a hot summer day and people leave them in a car without issue. Your snake should never exceed 100 degrees, for most species.
