I was born and raised in Alaska and moved to the Tucson desert just a few years back. During my time there we did have many aggressive bear and moose encounters in unfortunate ways... But it is important to note that every state has its dangers! I would never discourage someone from riding there but I will say to always be prepared for encounters, just in case. Just because someone claims they’ve spent a good amount of time in the outdoors there and haven’t seen anything doesn’t mean you won’t. Hopefully you don’t! But yeah, my point is be prepared no matter what people say, but don’t let it discourage you from riding there. Excited to go back and visit soon 😀

I was born and raised up there. Ironically I didn’t get into mountain biking until later in life when I lived very far from there. I did spend a tremendous amount of time outside in those type places. Via foot, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, or snow-machines in the winters.

Bear spray will do you quite a bit more than a phone with no signal (which is the case for most of AK). Personal Locator Beacons would be a wiser choice except they don't take pretty pictures.

A while back I rode " Lost Lake" in Seward. First time in Alaska. My first impressions is that there are no trail maintenance! Which made climbing tougher. Also, I noticed most locals ride hardtails - I rented one. The whole time I was paranoid about Bears and bought a "Bear Bell" ( AKA: Dinner Bell...LOL). I clipped my knee on a corner against a rock, wasn't bad but my knee was sore for the remainder of my trip. Overall it was a fun a ride!

Hey Jeff, would you give some XC bikes a little love, I am an XC rider and racer, 50 plusser and still cranking. I ride hardtails for the reason you ride flats. To keep the speed manageable. That Obrea Alma looks pretty sweet. Jeremy

The 10mm is popular, but I don’t really need that anywhere else. I read a lot about bear spray vs gun and felt totally safe with just the spray in the end. Lighter, cheaper, And seems softer to land on in a crash!
