our cat enclosure

This video is about our cat enclosure that I built to keep our rescue cats safe while enjoying our outdoor area with us. Cat enclosures look harder to build than they actually are but even if you don't want to build your own catio then you can find pre-fabricated cat enclosures that you only need to connect to your house for entry.

That is such a great way to keep your babies safe! I dont know why I didnt think of it before, it was'nt until I lost one of my little kitties and it hurt so much knowing I couldnt have him here anymore. I love your enclosure and everything around it! Also I cant believe these gun freaks so close by and having to hear that would just scare me. I think if I had to hear that everyday me and the kitties are packing up and moving out to the country!

I'm so sorry about your baby! I know the pain well. Yes, the folks go crazy at that gun range and I know from a friend that they will shoot at animals/cats if they hang out close to the target area but I feel like it is even worse out in the country where the gun crazy people can do whatever they want. You have to be scared to even go for a walk.

My cat would be terrified of the gun shots! He's very sensitive to loud noises. I've had cats killed by coyotes so I definitely share your concerns. I also grow my own catnip, but currently indoors. Quick question: What is the best way to propagate a catnip plant? Stem cuttings, separating part of the plant from the roots, or saving the seeds from the flowers?

Do you have an emergency door latches in the ramp to get the kitties out asap? I'm always nervous about not being able to get my babies in their carrier for emergency evacuation. I'm mostly worried about fire.

Love how u incorporated a lot of plants in and outside of the catio, if u want to make it even more discreet, plant some morning glory’s against the tunnels, they climb and they will attract lots of bugs, birds, bees and squirrels.

Great catio - I'd love to be able to do that, but stupid condo rules don't allow it :-( Your calico - she is gorgeous! We've lost all our old cats (18, 19 and 22) in the past two years and a young one I had adopted who died of FIP which is such an awful mutated virus. The ginger is actually a female and her name is Maya, after the German bumble bee character "Biene Maja" :) I have to make a new video one day soon because we adopted another cat since. His name is Walter and he is a black cat who is very silly and naughty.

I've Been wanting to do this for my two cats. I don't have a fence nor shade around my house its about30-40 to the nearest tree or bush for shade. But for now, I can at least make an outdoor space and just us the darker color roof panels like yours over most of it. Actually, I want a space for me too to get out of the sun and bugs. I think I'll use screening on the outside of the wire fencing to keep the skeeters from getting in and then add some branches with platforms all around for the. The younger cat has always tried to get outside and she has made on a few occasions. She always bolts for a good run which she does inside that we call "she's got the zoomies". Perhaps I'll figure out a way for her to run out there.

This is terrific! Just built one myself (smaller than yours), and it's tricky at first getting the cats to understand that the new outside space is OK and safe and part of their territory. At first they think it's some sort of trick like trying to get them in the carrier for a vet visit. lol. Still working on getting them to punch through the cat flap in the pet doors on their own. They seem to be enjoying it though. They're not big fans of the neighbor's lawnmower. :)

I wish cats could live longer, just lost my sweet little man at 11 years old. So sad. I've trained my cats to stay in the backyard and sit out with them, but that doesn't stop a wild predator from scooping them up. I live near the Boise foothills, you should see all the birds of prey. Looking to build something like this for my kittiies. Domesticated cats are like 3 year olds. Full of curiosity but still highly intelligent. What a beautiful place you built for your cats! My Catio is just a 4X4 window box enclosure, limited to my skills and tools, but I want to expand it some, though STILL keep it off the ground. I used hardware cloth to prevent small birds from getting in, but lizards occasionally find a way (unfortunately), so just curious about whether your cats bring lizards or snakes in from outside. Maybe you live in a snake free area. Anyway, your cats are blessed to have ended up with such a loving and skillful builder of cat havens. My cats would LOVE the whole yard! Beautiful!

It's not just about what strangers can do to your cats. Cats that roam also each kill an average of 160-180 wild animals each year, defecate on other people's property, and can bring home the diseases of every animal that's been in their mouths. Their nitrogenous feces encourages invasion of non native flora. The feces in storm runoff ends up in rivers and messes up the ecology of the rivers. They're the second most invasive species on the planet, and belong at home... as you've done. They're not part of nature, we genetically engineered them, and wildlife can't defend against them. Your cats will live twice as long, because of your actions. Good responsible owner. Thanks, from me, a wildlife rehabilitator.

Very nice though I've seen similar ones with inexpensive corrugated roofing to keep the runways, perches, and cats dry. Usually polycarbonate, but metal would also work. I been a member of gun clubs for about 50 years and have never seen a domestic animal on a range. It's reasonable to assume the noise keeps them away and no fellow shooter I ever knew would do anything to the animals, but I'm still happy you don't let them run loose for any number of reasons. I think predation is the biggest risk, but as is stated other dangers exist too. You've made them happy with your efforts.

I can see you’ve put a lot of effort into the enclosure, and care a lot. Not convinced it’s suitable to not let your cats roam free, if it’s really too dangerous then perhaps only get suitable breeds which can tolerate the indoor life nicely. Alternative is if done right, you could probably secure all the fencing around your garden then they can’t escape the garden yet are free to roam without bars. Of course, an enclosure like yours is certainly better than just being imprisoned so well done for that. Honestly though if it were me, I’d either move somewhere that isn’t so dangerous or simply not have cats.

I'm completely against acquiring cats according to breeds. All the cats that have shared and are sharing their life with us are rescues who needed a home desperately. A lot of cats are being euthanized at shelters and I wish they'd get adopted, no matter what their breed is. The ultimate life for a cat is to roam free (I'm aware of that and agree) but it's so much better for people to adopt and give a cat that had no future a loving home. These cats had no future and I'm doing the best I can to make them happy, give them all my love and spoil them daily. So you think it's better for the cats to die at a shelter than get adopted from someone like me? I hope not. I didn't buy them from an expensive breeder so I could collect and imprison them. Do you know how many cats are in shelters in NYC alone? Should they all die because the shelters don't agree to adopt them out to apartments? This subject just makes me so sad and I wish people would look at it from a different point of view.

It’s somewhat different in the UK. A cat adoption centre most likely here, would not allow to re home to such a setup. But yes I’d agree even though it’s not ideal, it’s better these cats given a loving home than being euthanised. My point about breeds was purely from the angle that some of them are very well suited to being indoors, and perhaps if you had the choice you might consider one of those. Sure I understand from what you’ve said these are rescue cats that are saved from the chop, so a very well done to you. You’ve put a lot of effort in and clearly care a lot, I didn’t mean to offend. I assume it’s not possible to move elsewhere so it is what it is.

@@juliakonya7266 Yeah, I've been looking at different options including cat proof fencing but I'm not sure how I want to proceed yet. My cat is an avid hunter and not just a sight-seer so I have to provide him with something that allows him more freedom of movement around the yard. I have trained him to walk around the yard while I have him on a leash but I can tell he hates it.
