Hello Shaye - thank you for the update. I have been following your 'no dig' garden and I am impressed with its progress. Weeding is thankless, my biggest challenge has always been, you lose so much top soil pulling weeds. I have tried silage - now I am moving to card board, silage, top soil. Thank you. Also thank you for being an inspiration. There has been so many tips in cooking, gardening, homemaking I have used. More importantly your attitude has re affirmed my own beliefs in home making - fellowship, comfort above impressing and beauty in the simple. Simple is not a negative - the best compliment I get is people I invite into our home acknowledge personality and feeling at ease over anything else. I have some high end items but in whole, it is about the space being used. You work that so well. Thank you - blessing to you and your family. Always look forward to be welcomed to what you share. Cheers!

Charles Dowding has been a huge help to me. I had such gardening-anxiety. He is so soothing and reassuring. My mantra has been “WWCD” - What Would Charles Do? LOL! Really. He makes it all so simple and doable. I have to adapt to my northern Vermont climate - but basically, I just do what Charles says to do.

Last year was my first attempt at gardening. When I first learned of "no-dig", I thought, there is no way this works. I thought it was just a hack/shortcut and figured farmers have been tilling for a long time so that must work, right? Big mistake. We've transitioned to no-dig and are so much happier with the results. We just had friends over to help us prepare some new no-dig beds and they seemed rather confused why we were using trash (cardboard) in the garden. It's funny how much cultural norms can influence us.

Fun Fact: If you water with drip tape and you put the holes up you will get a more even distribution of water along the whole line instead of just where the holes are. They are designed to create a mini pool of water along the center that spills over and runs a little way along the line.
@AnneMarieCartier2 жыл бұрын
I thought you sowed your lettuces directly in the garden? I do ...I never start them indoors!
@rubygray7749 Жыл бұрын
You gain 3 or 4 weeks head start on the season by sowing almost all seeds indoors in module trays, then planting out. They are protected from wind, heavy rain, frost and drying out, also from pests like slugs. Then when you replace those plants, you're saving another 2 to 4 weeks transition time by having the second sowing of seedlings ready to pop straight in. Charles even plants seedlings in between crops that are not quite finished yet, for a greater overlap and higher productivity.

Hey there - love seeing things evolve on the homestead and in the garden! We built a no dig from scratch last season as well and are loving it. Wondering what you mean by your well fills up from the snow pack in the winter? We're rural and have a standard rural property well, but not one that "collects" from snow pack or rain water - is this some sort of unique open well collection system? Maybe I'm confused :-) I was looking into rain water collection but we get a ton of snow here so it made me curious. Love the channel and beautiful family, Shaye!
@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden2 жыл бұрын
I expect she means when the snow melts on the hillside it fills up the underground reservoirs that they can access via the well. It's a natural process, nothing they actually need to do.
@jenniferh8512 жыл бұрын
@@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden Oh gotcha. I've only been rural for about a year and haven't really thought about how much impact snow has on the natural reservoirs, although totally logical. I've been wanting to do rain water collection for our large garden and my spouse keeps telling me "you realize we live in a town that has Springfield in the name." We had an unusually dry summer last year and I was paranoid about the water drying up.lol
@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden2 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferh851 I don't think it's ever a bad idea to collect rain water for the garden, it really does come in useful for the drier periods which seem to be getting longer and hotter. I collect the water off my garage and it goes a long way to support my little garden in summer :)

What compost did you get. That is the only part of the no dig I do not thoroughly understand. Is there a specific compost that you ordered?
