I have VIVOSUN led grow lights in my 10 x 12 greenhouse and I have tomatoes growing like crazy! Along with radishes, carrots, lettuce, bunching onions, broccoli and cauliflower. Love these! Easy, inexpensive, and simple to operate. I’m also in Michigan and it’s awesome to see what can grow inside when it’s cold outside. Thanks for this video!

Great video! I'd love to see you get a grow tent for your seed starting and make videos with it. I started my entire vegetable garden in a mini grow tent for the first time last year and it was a game changer. The grow tents come in all kinds of sizes and the inside walls are all completely reflective so no light is wasted. And the tents have bars on the top to hang the lights on, and they have cheap clip on fans to clip to the corners of the tents to help strengthen the seedlings. My peppers did amazing last year. You could even get a tent big enough to put those tables right inside, hang the lights and never have to move reflective pieces around ever again.

Thanks for recommending reflectors. I have a good grow light, designed for growing canibis but I use to keep my herbs growing through the winter and to start seedlings. I live in Cadillac, MI so needed a good light. I’m going to add reflectors to be more efficient. Thanks again!

Look into led highbay lights as well. I have grabbed 4 packs of 200 watt true draw 26k lumens for 50-60 bucks sometimes. 4000-5000k is a great all around spectrum.

I have a quick question about the utility buckets shown on your IG. Are those safe for growing vegetables! I mean just because it has a food grade symbol doesn’t mean it’s safe for growing. Right? . Possibly due to the excessive heat involved during growing season. It seems the consensus for growing vegetables is negative. Correct?

Most of the time, well water is preferred over chlorinated. Do you have access to a well tap or is there a riser installed? If you decide to fix it, I would definitely have that water tested by a certified lab for bacteria, lead and other metals, and nitrates and other nutrients. The EGLE lab in Lansing has decent prices. Stagnant well water can grow bacteria so you may need to shock it. And, you mentioned the pump was old, so there may be some lead in the piping materials. If fertilizers were used on your property, they may leech nitrates into the water/soil.

Growing overnight during off-peak hours can save you electricity (money!) and help mitigate excessive heat if that’s also an issue. Bc we all know you’ll need fans, humidifiers, etc. A video about VPD would be cool too!

Most of us have had LEDs long before we knew. LEDs were originally only in red. They were used in electronic equipment (TV remotes) long before grow lights. They are indicator lights that don't overheat the capacitors, resistors, etc.. Technology HAS come a long way! !😉

No, didn't enjoy the video because I don't care what the power rating of the lights are. The MOST important piece of info that you COULD have mentioned unless you really don't know, is how the lighting is used. This was like an unboxing video, which I've watched one or two over my few thousand videos I've watch. I don't care if a person uses 40W or 100W fixtures or whatever, what I want to know is what's the amount of lumens at the plant tops. Why can't people talk about THAT? I hear people talk about raising or lowering the lights, but what's your basis for that? Wait to see how screwed up a plant is? By that time the production of the plant has already been slowed and possibly reduced because of it. There's something a LOT more important about using light reflection than simply getting more use out of the fixtures. As the plant grows it puts out more leaves. The more leafs a plant has the more it blocks light from lower leafs. Because the sun is so much more bright, light bounces off of surfaces and even parts of the plant or even other leafs and light gets down to lower leafs. With a lighting setup, that doesn't happen at strong enough levels and if you don't have reflection and are trying to grow something that gets up-potted before going outside and you give it another 2 - 4 weeks after up-potting, depending on the plant the lower leafs won't get enough light and will turn yellow and fall off, and THIS can slow plant production since it keeps losing it's ability to photosynthesize at larger levels which is important as the plant grows. The plant needs a growth in photosynthesis as it gets bigger, and reflection helps to get light down to the lower leafs. This is especially true for plants with larger leafs.

Fluorescents put off a lot of unneeded heat that LEDs don't. I'm going to wait until some of the fluorescent bulbs in my older grow light setup start failing before I replace them with LEDs...I use the heat they put off to keep my sourdough warm during the proofing period when making bread. 😂

Interesting, 8 years ago when you were doing videos and gardening in your basement, I (and others) asked you numeruous times what brand lights you were using and you acted like it was some bug secret and wouldn't answer anyone's questions regarding the lighting brands; You also refused to speak about lumens or color temp for plant growth.

Since the power consumption/cost of these lights was explained so poorly here's the basic math on cost: the Vivosun lights indeed draw 100 watts on maximum brightness. 100 watts / 1000 = 0.1 kWh. If you run one 100 watt light for 16 hours a day that's 1.6 kWh. With $0.20 per kWh in Michigan call that $0.32 per day or ~$10 per month. No way the other fixtures are pulling 100 watts if they each cost $30 per month to run vs "$0.15 to $0.25 per day"
@MIgardener
@MIgardener Ай бұрын
You said so much and said the same thing I said but didn’t pay attention. “They were around $120/month to run but they are a whole lot cheaper now.”
