💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

MP, looking at the assembly of the kitchen tap I saw when you removed the sink, the wood of the base of the worktop is not resinated. That needs to be resined with epoxy to waterproof it, in case water leaks from the base of the sink and could cause it to rot. Another detail I noticed was that the sink doesn't have an overflow, if you leave the tap open, the water overflows. Happy New Years
@denisebrooks4513
@denisebrooks4513 8 ай бұрын
Overflows are not used on boats. Water is precious and limited, but if the sink did overflow, the spilled water would find its way to the bilge where it will be automatically pumped out by the bilge pumps
@Sisineddu

@@denisebrooks4513 "It's the discovery of hot water, your answer" in my boat the two sinks both have an overflow and it is connected to the overboard drain. The drier the bilge, the better, for a sailing sailor.

It's always good to improvise, I think. If it works, great. I remember on one of our boats, we used a beer keg as the diesel tank. It worked fine, and last time I talked to the present owner, fifty years later, it still has the same keg tank.

Look into applying 'split foam tubing' over as much of the hot water lines as you can. It will prevent heat loss from the bare plastic lines as well as bringing hot water to the taps much faster, 3/4 ID x 3/8" thick is less than one Real per foot. The foam made a huge difference in our shower, much less wasted water from running it till it got warm... Since YABA is a sailboat and will heel over under sail, that through hull may become submerged. You should install a 'Vented Loop' in the discharge hose to prevent seawater from siphoning back into the hull...

Somebody should have warned you two, when the plumbing part is aired you will receive a lot of opinions for some reason plumbing triggers people I have plumbed in the states for 20 years and understand this is not a house and that the systems don't looK or work the same. Ben, the sink discharge that goes through the hull and above the waterline, does that have a one way valve on it so that if you are heeled over it will prevent seawater flowing into the sink and flooding…… does that make sense?Also, might I suggest some wiggle room on the hose lengths to allow for expansion and contraction, especially the hot water line. Anyway guys, I think we all felt a little rush at the float date, it will pass quick enough but don’t rush please, you will have plenty of time. Finally, all the very best fora wonderful, sailing filled, safe 2024, it will be awesome to see you both begin to enjoy the fruits of your hard work, well done all

My bugbear with boat system installations is how every pipe and wire just seems to find a random path, rather than a planned route. The tee below the galley sink in case in point. I’d like to move the tee closer to the bulkhead ahead so the feed line could be fastened to the bulkhead rather than just flopping around. I’ll let you know how this idea goes when I get into my own boat renovation… lol!

Plumb the sink drain with a proper P-trap. Run it back to the wall and run the flex pipe down the wall/bulkhead.
@documetricsinc.6135
@documetricsinc.6135 8 ай бұрын
@@brentchalmers1436 Are you sure that's necessary on a drain line that runs to a sump? The p-trap is designed to seal the drain line from sewer gas. That doesn't apply here, does it? 31:25
@brentchalmers1436
@brentchalmers1436 8 ай бұрын
@@documetricsinc.6135 you are probably correct, but that depends on which foul odours emanate from that pump out box. I would be inclined to treat that sink sump as a miniature holding tank as opposed to a direct drain. If you KNOW let me know cause I actually don’t!!! My comment is based on other circumstances/installations I had a knee-jerk reaction to the cable-tie making a “U” in the hose where a trap could go.

Hi, great video. One piece of advice is that the sink drain hose shouldn't be corrugated as it'll trap dirty water and start to smell. A straight smooth hose would work best. Also why isn't the sink plumbed straight to the outside? One less expense as the grey box isn't needed and one less thing to break. Happy sailing guys

As a tip to you, do not put teflon tape on the threads that you are going to thread the 1/2 inch fitting from the breaded line from the faucet because there is a rubber o ring that seals the water not the threads, by putting teflon, tape on threads, it fills the threads and it makes it harder for the fitting to tighten up against the o' ring.

You guys have done an amazing job. Don't let the short timeline overwhelm you. There is much you can do in the water. Focus on what must be done on the dry first. Finish installing the metals to put the shrouds. Make sure you can drop and raise the anchor. The boom and all the wooden parts for rigging can be installed in the water, but have it on the boat while is easier to carry. Install the sacrificial keel and hull through sensors. You can get a depth sensor that can be dropped from the side. All other sensors can be wired later. Finish what the boat needs to float. Bring into the boat that which will be heavy and cumbersome to tranfer into the boat like the freezer and tanks. Have a dingy to travel back and forth from boat to land. Safety equipment. All other instalation and wiring and rigging can be done in the water. Concentrate on installing what must be done on land so the boat doesn't sink. You can finish everything else on the boat. Remember, if you can move the rudder drop anchor and move the boat without sinking, you can put the boat in the water. It will be more inconvenient, but you can finish it in the water.😉

Based on my past experience building and modifying boats, I would not launch until all the work is completed to avoid getting material to the boat and the flexibility to not need to rush completing what needs to be accomplished prior to launching it. What difference does it make to be on the hard and tied up to a dock as you will not be going anywhere soon. Plus, think of the little furry ones, how will it affect them? Do not rush things after coming this far. I like how MP looked at you when you informed her of your plan. Are you real? I love to follow the progress as you advance in completing building the boat.

Hi guys. Happy New Year. Oh yes the push-to connect that's for using the Flex Pipe. I'm familiar with that. The red pipe is for hot water and blue pipe is for cold water. It's a nice set up. But when you connect, it has to be in all the way. You can't connect and leave a little out or you will have a leak and water will be everywhere later. That's right MP. You said it correctly. MP I think he meant components not ingredients. But it's understood. Ha Ha Ha. You guys are so playful. I love it. And never a dull moment. Thanks guys. Good job!! Well done!!

Splash in January. That’d be amazing. So enjoyed this episode. Not to make extra work for you, but have you given any thought to a “pot filler”? Just a cold water outlet on a swing arm by the stove, so you never have to carry water. Also, if you’re boiling something and need to top it up, you don’t have to move a hot pot.

Dear Maria Paula and Ben, First of all my wife WIlleke and I want to wish you, your both families, friends, crew in the shipyard and all your subscribers a very happy New Year in prosperity but above all in a good health. Launching Yabá by the end of January is rather quick since there’s still a lot to do before Yabá is ready to sail but a lot of things still ca be finished when Yabá is in the water. We wish you, MP’s father and your crew lots of success with the finishing of this extraordinary refit of this beautiful ship and send you love from the Netherlands

I think 3 weeks is wildly optimistic based on where you are today unless you can employ some additional help.
