Today we're propagating & forcing forsythia, growing mushrooms, seeing 'Northlawn Saving Grace' dahlia propagation at Jung Seed, checking on our waxed amaryllis, and viewing the results of the cut poinsettia experiment. I've also redesigned the garden library!

Aww Danielle! I’m sitting here tearing up as I watch this! What a beautiful, full circle story! Your grandmother would be so proud and honored. 💗 I’m so happy for you! Thanks for all the updates. This was a fun video with lots of elements! But my favorite part was hearing about those special memories of your grandma. Isn’t it funny the things we remember?

I enjoyed hearing about the history of the name of your garden (Grandma) and the ways in which you honor her. I'd like it if you could put those tidbits into an addendum somewhere on your home page. I love knowing about a gardener's motivations (as much as you care to share). How nice that your grandma was such a presence in your life!

I feel like I always make the same or similar comment. I think your content is so engaging because you take us on the journey, you inspire, you teach and share personal stories that many can relate. And of course, you follow up with your experiments & projects; the legwork you put in and then sharing the results is extremely helpful. The best part, most everything you do is attainable for the average home gardener. Thank you!!

Thanks for sharing your story about your grandma. My grandma just turned 94. We would go flower shopping the week before mothers day and we would fill the whole vehicle. She has been in a nursing home the last few years so we don't go anymore.

Hi Danielle I love your new garden library plans! Looking forward to seeing that! I forced forsythia for an Easter arrangement once and it was beautiful. I've cut its bare branches in winter to make some garden obelisks too. Im very excited and so happy for you to have Jung seed propagating your Saving Grace Dahlia tuber! Its truly a blessing and naming it North lawn saving grace is extra special. What an extra blessing to be tied to your grandmothers legacy. Your story was amazing. Thanks for the poinsettia update, I was wrong guessing the rooted ones would last the longest. Good luck with your mushroom kit. Last year you had great success and cooked them up! Yum. Hope you got to Grace before she ate something she shouldn't have!! Thanks for another great video. 😍

Can’t wait until we can add Northlawn Saving Grace to our gardens! My grandmother also was instrumental in my gardening love and life. When she passed I was given her old videos (the old type on reels) of me (3 years old) walking among her beloved Iris, and then stopping to point my hand up to them while smiling at the camera (Vanna White style on Wheel of Fortune) and then later in the season it was of her Dahlias. When she could no longer live on her own and moved in with my dad, we had to sell her farm. There was an old red rose that grew beside her well house, my husband broke 3 shovels digging that up for me to bring home. It is the pride and joy of my garden.

I just watched your most recent video and enjoyed it. I've become a subscriber and have learned many new things as I watch. I am a retired horticulturist, worked at a large arboretum in the midwest and know that you never quit learning in this field. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your willingness to try new things and share what you learn is a great example to us all.Not everyone does that. Your video about how flowers and plants saved you rang so true for me (and I am sure others). I was a mid life career changer-at my lowest point and found horticulture through a split second decision I made to enroll in a horticulture program. It was like an audible "click that could be felt" and I've never looked back. In my earlier years (20's) nothing really felt right but I didn't know how "right" can feel until my mid thirties and-boom- there horticulture was -to save me. In fact to me this feeling and hort. field in the early days of my education and work reminded me of a particular image. Here it is-I'm in a dark wood and all of a sudden off in the distance is a cabin with a light glowing from within and it draws me near. Nobody can take that from me. Keep up the great videos- I love watching your progress.

As for the poinsettias, I'm shock too about the one with the roots wilting😮 the other two look great. I can't imagine why that happened, but it seems the other two methods are the better way to go. Hi there, Sorry I am little slow leaving a comment on your video. I think a problem you may be having with the poinsettia that has its full root system in water is a possible build up of carbon dioxide. You said you hadn’t changed the water and the top growth looked pretty robust over the top of the vase. You may be lacking air exchange the same as a waterlogged plant in soil.

I had beautiful White Candle amaryllis this year. They are beautiful but about half way through the life of the flower stalk it suddenly started to tip over. Not the entire bulb, just the flower stalk itself. Do you know why this happens? It was in plenty of light and actually started to tip away from the light. I am confused.

I got those waxed amaryllis for the first time last year from Costco. Once they were done blooming I noticed, while the leaves did not grow, they did not die. I decided to put them in my garage in the hopes of planting them outside in my flower garden come spring. Much to my surprise, they seemed to enter this state of suspended animation. The leaves didn’t grow but they didn’t die, either. When it was time, I peeled them and planted in the ground. They spent the garden season growing but not blooming so the day before the first heavy frost, I dug them up and put them back in my garage. The leaves died off and are now ready to flower again.

Congratulations, how exciting to have your beautiful dahlia out in the world! About the roots in the vase, as I understand it, water roots and soil roots are different so maybe the poinsettia is going to be sad until it puts out some new roots that are better for living in water. I wonder if a humidity dome (I’m thinking just a plastic bag) would help it in the meantime.

Congrats on your dahlia going out into the world! How exciting that must be. 🙂 Make sense the poinsettia results, they’re not happy when overwatered so their roots probably don’t enjoy sitting in water. On the other hand, you could root a cutting in water so not searing the ends works too.

My amaryllis are blooming too. Pull off the yellow stamens as soon as they open. Flowers will last much longer. Any florist that’s good will do the same for any lily/easter/asiatic etc. the yellow will stain if you don’t remove it as soon as they open. The longer they are on the flower the more pollen they create! Just slide them off
