Love your channel!! You mentioned you only had about 5% in bonds. I'm almost 40 and the traditional portfolio management view would say I should have about 40% bonds and 60% stocks. What is your take on that?
@MoneyandLifeTV5 жыл бұрын
Melanizing thank you for the support. The 60/40 is very traditional management style as you mentioned, but I think it is a bit too conservative in my opinion. In the past bond interest rates were much higher than they are today. You used to be able to get 5 - 10%, but not anymore. I think when you nearing retirement it would be fine, but I think 80/20 , 70/30, or even 90/10 would be more suitable. People are living longer these days. My concern would be that the 60/40 allocation would not grow quickly enough to outpace inflation and the higher costs of living in the future. Those are just my thoughts of course. Ultimately you have to do what you feel most comfortable with and what makes the most sense for your retirement needs. Hope that helps. Great question!

Nice video. Dividend investing helps me to navigate, as we have seen, a bear market. Especially if you re-invest the dividends and capital gains distributions. If the market declines, you re-invest the dividends buying more shares. The longer the bear market, the more shares you are buying at lower prices. Assuming the market recovers its losses, you will have more money than when the bear market started.

Great video! Hope this isn't a silly question but - lets say for now you want your dividends to automatically be reinvested, but down the road you want those dividends to go into your bank account instead. Is that something you set up when you buy the stock? Or do you just buy the stock and somehow set that up afterwards? thanks
@MoneyandLifeTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi Melanie, great question. Yes, to have them automatically reinvested you can do something called a "DRIP" which stands for dividend reinvestment plan. You can stop the DRIP at anytime so do not be afraid to try it if that is something you want to do. Please note, however, that not every stock/investment plan has reinvestment option. Sometimes you will have to manually reinvest the cash that is deposited into your account if that is the case. Many people love DRIPS, but I've always preferred to manually reinvest my dividends.

TLP_Gaming hows it going? Thanks for checking out the video. Currently I use Ameritrade for our taxable brokerage accounts and Roth IRAs. If I were to start over I would probably look more into Robinhood for the taxable brokerage account, because there are no transactions fees when buying or selling investments. If you want to do no fee investing within a Roth I heard Firsttrade may be a good platform to check out, but I have never used it before. The big upside of Ameritrade is that despite the $6.95 transaction fee, you can do any type of investing you want with little to no limitations. The downside of many of the free platforms like Robinhood or M1 finance, etc is that some of them have limited functionality. For example, at the moment you cannot open a Roth IRA with Robinhood to my knowledge. Certainly look closely at what limitations a platform has before going with it. Hope that helps :)

Excellent video. First time viewer, just want to ask as a beginner ; is putting in $10,000 a year minimum a good start to reach the level you are at now in the next 10 years perhaps? With stocks like McDonald’s, realty income and Coca Cola? Just want to know if I’m on the right line? Many thanks. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼

Personally, not a huge fan of focusing on dividends as an investment strategy. Works somewhat well in tax-deferred accounts but, in taxable accounts, a focus on total return has been shown to deliver better risk and tax-adjusted returns over the long run (especially a factor-tilted portfolio). Focusing on dividends means you have a chance at targeting firms that have positive factor premium associations (Quality, Value, etc), but a sole focus on dividends means you might be buying companies that no longer have any growth prospects (this isn't necessarily bad) or might even be junk. Further, consider the number of dividend paying companies in the US has actually been declining since the 1960s as companies are favouring share repurchases over dividend payments. A focus solely on dividends completely misses this section of the market that has been a strong driver of returns over the past 10 years.

Mike, thank you for sharing, excellent video! I’m in the patch to changing my current financial situation. I’m in the process of paying off some debt ☹. Once I pay my debt, I will start doing some long-term investment in the stock market. What’s your take on managing your risk? Everyone is saying that we are heading into a recession. In that event, what could happen to the investment or portfolio? Is there any strategy to mitigate or minimize any losses? Thank you!
@MoneyandLifeTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, great question. I hope to do a video around this topic soon. Everyone is saying a recession is either here or it is about to happen. Either way i'll be investing, but i'll look at purchasing consumer staples, perhaps, more bonds, etc. Basically boring companies that sell products people are likely to buy no matter what the economy is doing. If a recession does hit make sure to have an emergency fund in place before investing. Biggest risk to most people is losing their job. Make sure resume is up to date just to be on safe side. and all other major debts are paid.

What platform or website do you use to buy divident stocks? And what happens to your stocks if that site/platform closes or goes bankrupt?
@MoneyandLifeTV5 жыл бұрын
Hi Roberto, I use Ameritrade at the moment. If the site or platform goes bankrupt there is a special type of insurance in place that protects the consumer if the brokerage firm goes under. It is different than FDIC. The cash portion of your investment account is typically insured up to $250,000 through FDIC though. Of course the market value of your investments would not be insured. Each platform is different though so it is important to read their policies or call them and ask this question before opening an account so you are completely clear on the rules before starting.
@inconvenientexistenlism5 жыл бұрын
@@MoneyandLifeTV Is the $250,000 insurance just for that one platform or for all of our investment total? For example, if I have $250,000 with Ameritrade and another $250,000 with Robinhood for a grand total of $500,000 in investment, will I only be covered up to $250,000 then lose the other half $250,000 both belly up...or I will be protected up to $250,000 for each platform and not lose any more. If the latter, then it's a great idea to open a brokerage account with different firms and not have more than $250,000 in each, right?
@inconvenientexistenlism5 жыл бұрын
@@MoneyandLifeTV Also, what about if we have 2 brokerage accounts with the same firm, for instance, 2 standard borkerage accounts with Ameritrade? Will they EACH be insured up to $250,000, thus technially a total of $500,000 insurance for Ameritrade or still $250,000 regardless of the 2 standard brokerage accounts with Ameritrade?

Could you tell your asset allocation and which assets, ETFs and mutual funds you owned in your brokerage and Roth IRA accounts? What's up Castro? Congrats on starting the journey that is the biggest first step. Couple of tips to picking companies. 1. Invest in companies you understand. 2. Invest in companies that continue to grow their top line revenue, and bottom line net income. 3. I try only to invest in companies that have consistent long-term growth which can be easily seen just by looking at that the company's stock chart on yahoo finance. 4. Avoid investing a large amount of money all at once. Invest slowly overtime. Especially when choosing investments. Some of my biggest mistakes back in 2014/2015 came when I invested too much money on one investment, and the investment went south.....had I been smarter I would have invested a smaller initial amount, and minimized by unrealized loss. Hope that helps. I'll be producing videos on investing analysis in the near future so stay tuned.

@MoneyandLifeTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi thrifts N dreams thanks for asking. Are you referring to the dividend payment or capital appreciate of the share price? Capital appreciation isn't taxed until the day you sale the investment at a gain. However, dividends are always considered taxable income unless they are held within an IRA or Roth IRA. Hope that helps.

@MoneyandLifeTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunil, good question are you referring to etfs? Etfs already have great built in diversification so you really don't need many. Especially not in a Roth, because you are limited to $6,000 per year. I think 2 is a good place to start. If you put a lot of money in two funds it doesn't necessarily mean it will grow faster in terms of return on investment. Your ROI is going to be determined by how well those funds perform individually. However, if you just do 2 for right now what's nice is that you can build up those positions sooner. Lets say you you pick 2 funds and get those both up to $10,000 each before you add a 3rd as an example. That would be totally fine. You can always add more funds on later. When first learning investing I suggest to keep things as simple as possible.
