For hinge security, use Allen Key head bolts/screws & stick a magnetic ball bearing in the bolt head. Remove with a more powerful magnet. Alternatively, super glue a non-magnetic ball bearing in & use nail polish remover to get it out if necessary. It's how we successfully secured exepensive bicycle parts in the theft capital of London when commuting as they're all Allen key heads 👍

Antennas is a complicated subject on its own. The gain (db) of an antenna will increase its range. UHF is ultra high frequency which is line of sight. The gain of the antenna will NOT make the signal go over hills. The radiation pattern of the antenna dictates the direction the signal will radiate. The ideal place for the antenna is right in the middle of the roof (metal roof) as it needs a ground plane. Most antennas are multiples of quarter wave, the ground plane makes up the othe quarter wave. There are ground plane independent antennas available but they are not as effective. As I said antennas is a complex subject. Anyway good luke with the project, it's comming along really well. Very impressed.

One other suggestion for the hinges is to replace the Phillips head screws with flat headed bolts, running through the panel. You can get flat headed bolts with little serrations on the underside of the bolt head so they dig into the hinge and resist turning as the nut is tightened from the inside. You could also leave the bolts long enough so you can hold the end with pliers once the nut has been screwed on, however they would protrude a bit more inside your cabin.

dont screw your hinges on doors/hatches as people can unscrew them to break in. Best to rivet
@jeep62423 жыл бұрын
While true, you could poke a hole through the composite and just saw through the panel in probably the same time as using a screwdriver, not to mention just drilling out the rivets would also only take seconds. I am not sure there is much you can do in the end

I'm sure your going to surprise us with what you choose to do 1st :). I would tackle the bathroom 1st and get the toughest job over with. Kitchen and bed can be made to flow around bathroom placement. As to security most thieves won't take the time to remove screws when they can pry or smash instead. If you think like a thief before adding or buying security products you will start to see if they are even needed or practical. Cameras on the other hand can be best security investment just for the fact they make getting insurance claims paid out fast and easier. A well armed man is still the best security measure and in my opinion Chris has the well armed covered :). Keep up the great content and smiling personality's. Looking forward to next weeks surprise.

Guy’s you are doing a great job, if I may suggest a progressive fit out plan ( I am absolutely sure you have already designed your interior but please make cardboard cut outs and position them in your living space it may take a little bit of extra time but it is really worth it- it allows you to be able to mask or draw a line where all your electric need to run, plumbing ect. It also affords you the ability to move things around so as to optimise your living and storage area’s. It saved me thousands of dollars in fabrication of water tanks( grey water, fresh) consolidated power distribution area( included my lithium batteries)amount of roles of different gauge cables and fittings ect/ cooking equipment ( I have got a diesel powered oven, hot plate/ diesel heater unit- note the reason I used diesel I didn’t need certification, aircon, lighting ect.) you can get some really nice combination shower toilet kits that are diy friendly. Seriously think about levelling legs on your living area base frame ( personal experience has proven they are invaluable not only when you have no choice to park/ camp on sloping ground and even when you are moving around in your cabin. Power points both 12v and 240v plus USB ports placements need to be well thought out, just another suggestion which I have done in my mog was have a camera monitor not only in the cab of the mog but also a secondary in the cabin so if you have something or someone is hanging around at night you have a visual before you leave the safety of your cabin.

Have you considered a stairs assembly that is completely solid......it must be attached to a pivot under the door sill and when put away...simply lift it by the first rung (the one on the ground) and rotate it backwards to be secured under the house box in a cradle. Your pivot position is going to be critical as the steps assembly must cradle flush to the box body. 2 hardware aluminum ladders bolted side by side should give you the width required and the lightness/rigidity for the job. Good luck Great work you two...👍🏻👍🏻

With regard to the exposed hinges, just on the inside fit a tongue to the inside face of the door & hatches on the hinge side. Tongue can be a full length piece or a couple short ones so they overlap the frame on the inside, that way even with hinges removed it can not be opened because the tongue(s) won’t allow due to overlapping the frame. Easy fix 😉😁

Slam latches work a treat for hatches and doors, also check out RVLock for entry doors. These come with keypads AND remote key fobs Plus they can be dead latched from the inside. Looking great. I bought few Front Runner products that were pretty bad. Last was the jerrycans that have the tap on the bottom. Every one leaked at the fill cap and leaked at the tap. Then had to spend 10 bucks extra for a brass tap to stop the leaks. Air bubble pockets and imperfections in the mold all over the place. Just garbage, especially for the premium price. I don't know what it is about chairs but I keep buying cheap ones that last for years and the expensive ones all immediately break. So it's very difficult to make the jump to the few really expensive chairs that also seem durable. As much as the composite box is strong and great to build with I am pretty sure someone with a hatchet, dremel, saw, mallet and/or chisel etc could break into the panels in about 10 seconds. A rotozip would cut through that like butter lol. Luckily most thieves probably don't realize this for now. But not easy to do much else for security.

For stairs, search for our KZbin video on the rotating 'flat' stairs we made for our MAN. If you search KZbin for 'MAN expedition truck stairs' it'll be up the top of the list. I can post a link, but not sure if that is allowed here. Sorry about the terrible soundtrack - don't know what we were thinking when we posted it. They are light (made of aluminium) and they fold pretty flat for easy storage. Our doorway is 1200mm off the ground, and the steps make it easy to get up there safely.

A simple metal finger (made from flat stock) on the hatch that extends up passed the wall will keep the hatch from being removed if the hinges are removed.
@darrenjohnson44823 жыл бұрын
On the inside top edge of the hatches is there room to install a flat strap that is riveted to the hatch and overlaps the inside of the frame. If so this would prevent the hatch being removed even if the hinges were removed.

As a Locksmith, the way you've mounted the external handle raises some concerns... it looked to me like if the glue fails / is forced, the entire handle could be rotated, while locked, to open the door. Also, if you modified the internal cam (that the locking bars attach to) into a floating cam, and the spindle (the bar that drives the latch hrom the handle), you could get the right internal handle to always be able opened the door... which would allow you to lock the door at night. Much safer. You'd just have to attach a spring tensioner to stop it rattling open while driving.

How do you lock the door when you are inside? (I know from the window). Put short chains or straps on the inside behind the hinges for the hatches and door - if someone does remove the screws, they still can't pull the hatch or door away to get in. For stairs, put in a lift. Just one of those ebay electric 1000kg winches a couple of those linear rails (bunnings) and a flip up step? The winch can live under the floor and it should probably be setup with two cables - one to each side of the flip up step. Yes, it will protrude a little (since you didn't allow for it despite my earlier suggestion for a lift not being taken seriously ho ho ho!). Great job guys. For rank amateurs the result is a very professional indeed. Looking forward to when you start decking it out inside.

What do you think we should build first?The Stairs here goes an under tray slide out landing in front of the door stairs hinge attached to the landing going to the back of the truck hand rail fixed to the off truck side.Because the stairs are hinged to drop down to the ground they can also reach the roof of the truck. Like a draw bridge they can be pulled up for security pade locking in the travel position the landing rail acts as bars across the door.Stairs should have a scissors action hand rail that moves with the stair position.Also convex stair treads like on a ships movable gang plank stairs that auto adjust to any dock height.The door in the open position act as a hand rail.Put a glass or and a screen door on the inside for Light and air circulation.I put a spiral Staircase on my off road camper draw bar no good for your application.

For security on your door and hatches. If you put a second lockable latch at the top of the hatches it would stop the problem of hinge removal so people can’t easily break in, another method is to use tabs/pins that stick out into the wall/hatch frame or simply over lap inside at the top, this does the same thing that the top of the hatches can’t be pulled out, same on the door, all done on the hinge side… if that makes sense?
