Hey guys I just want to clarify a few things in case it wasn’t clear in the video. The original bolts were in fact grade 8.8 and the new longer bolts I sourced are also 8.8. Off camera I did replace the bolts on the other engine for the same reason and I added the 3rd bolt for the alternator bracket on the other engine as well.

With the additional bolt to strengthen the engine mounting you should be good. Here's a tip on drilling out broken bolts....pick up a set of left-hand twist drill bits. They cut with a counter-clockwise rotation and very often the broken bolt will come out while drilling.

8.8 don't mean its grade 8, it needs to have 5 radial hash marks around the head.

Billy, retired engineer here, Broken bolts are a test of will, we have all broken off bolts or studs off, hardened taps in blind holes or easy outs like you did, you kept after it and didn't give up. nor did you damage your block , so well done. Short of having a welder or machine shop to bring the whole thing to, you did the best you could with what you had and prevailed. Job well done.

Billy you handle your level of frustration like a champ. I commend you on staying focused and with ever new problem you find a solution. On the bright side, it happened in port, parts were available, and you fixed it (for now) without having to employ someone to do it for you, with huge costs and delays avoided. Pat yourself on the back. Job well done. 👏 Happy 2025 to the Swezey and Groth families. 🥳

The 8.8 does not mean it is a grade 8.8 it means it is a grade 5 or medium strength (shear) and too weak for that application. Go online and pull up a chart for metric to SAE bolt head markings. Get a high shear bolt and make sure it is not fully threaded where the mount is.I suggest you put a shock mount to stop the engine torque putting so much pressure on the bolts. I owned a boat repair shop and side mount shock mounts are available. It looks like the engine is too hard mounted to the boat.

Billy, awesome job on the bolt removal. You made a comment about drilling Stainless. I've removed many broken bolts and drilled thousands of holes in SS in my old age. Cutting oil is a must. But most importantly is get yourself set of good 'Cobalt drill bits' Pricey but well worth it. Start with a small bit and work up in size. Run drill on low speed & half throttle with heavy pressure. once you get the feel for it you will be impressed at how quick you'll knock that hole out. Also using a larger easy out depending on size bolt you have a much better chance of easy out not breaking. And one last helpful hit. before inserting easy out in to the hole you just drilled into the bolt, heat the bolt up with a torch. Works like a charm. Love your channel been watching for years from the very beginning.

Hi Guys, Minimum thread engagement for a bolt should be 1.5 x the bolt diameter. So the first bolt you extracted was well under that, but the failure mode was not thread pullout but bolt shear. Which could indicate fatigue cracking due to combined shear, tensile and in particular bending loads into the bolt. If you google fatigue cracking of a bolt, you will see “shell like” marks on the failure surface initiating from the first crack point to the final catastrophic failure looking a bit like tide marks [assuming you kept the failed bolts]. I think the absence of the third bolt to lock the bracket into a plane allowed the 2 bolts fitted to see fore/aft bending loads. Bending loads are a killer for bolted joints, so the 3rd offset bolt would help to lock out bending. Also bolt clamping loads due to the applied installation torque are critical to stopping the bolted joints unclamping and the dreaded bending getting in there. Off the top of my head, 18 lb/ft torque for 3/8 UNF/M10 bolts. For bolts seeing high cycles and out of sight use loctite 242. Make sure you degrease with acetone or brake clean and let it flash off before you apply the loctite both the bolt and the threaded hole in the block. You can get a bolt torque mark gel that you can apply linking the bolt and the bracket. It sets very brittle and will crack off should the bolt back off its torque giving you a visual indication. Very useful in difficult to access places. Finally you can upgrade to 12.9 bolts but I don’t think the bolt strength was the issue in your case. Assuming the above is all good, the only thing you will need to keep an eye on long term is corrosion. Obviously stainless is much better, but unless to go for top end aerospace grades of stainless you will be backing off on tensile and shear failure loads based on 8.8 or 12.9 HS steel. Happy New year and looking forward to your next adventures. Tim

Glad you got out of a bad situation. YOU could have been offshore and in real trouble. A few things to double check. 1. Mechanical stresses on Marine motor mounts are NOT equal; port vs starboard. Yanmar typically used differential mount sizes. Lots of bad things occurred during COVID supply issues. This could explain such a premature failure, or just too short of bolts, cheap bolts, or improperly torqued. 2. You may want to consider a Stainless Steel and Urethane upgrade marine motor mount. Rust is your enemy. 3. Unbrako remains in business and makes exceptional high tensile bolts and matching Duralock "thick" machine washers to resist vibrational effects. 4. A torque wrench is added weight on a boat but can be a good long term friend on motor mounts. Seawind owes YOU big. This just shouldn't happen on a premium boat. Be Safe! Keep plenty of spare parts on board.

Also retired Engineer, At least those bolts weren't bottomed out, am writing this without seeing how you went, but in this situation left hand drills would be real handy, also don't use SS bolts go for High tensile for resilience, maybe go an inch or so longer and pack out the difference with a spacer, this would also help out resilience of those bolts, but others may disagree. Resilient mounts come in two types sometimes, go the cheaper one, the other is designed for Mono boat that may at some point be upside down. Don't think you need consider that.

Just a quick side note: You are not going to get a metric bolt in grade 8. A metric bolt will of course use the metric rating and in this case 8.8. 8.8 is the equivalent of grade 5 in the standard system. 10.9 would be the equivalent of grade 8. I would like to think grade 8.8 would be fine here as the bolt is not a high torque bolt nor under tension. I would bet you just had some inferior bolts not were not really rated properly. To bad you did not have any left handed drill bits. Would be handy to have along with the Easy Outs, and I bet both bolts would of come out with a left handed bit.

The bolts that you took out are just standard bolts a 10.9 or a 12.9 is a hardened bolt but they snap easier the next step is Allen . You can get a 4.4 which is a weaker bolt . Nothing fancy about 8.8 .

From an old engine technician, I have a good piece of advice: If something breaks once, it will break again. Therefore, a change is necessary. In this case, I would recommend using a longer bolt and plenty of strong washers or a special thick-walled tube, 4-6 cm long. When tightening, the bolt's body will stretch slightly or flex, providing more room for vibrations. This reduces the risk of the bolt breaking or coming loose. If you use stronger bolts, there's a risk that the problem will shift to the engine block. Moreover, they won't be easy to drill out.

Hi Billy. Great video as always. It looks like the problem is with the person/people who decided to use only two of the four block mounting holes to fasten the mounting bracket to the engine block. With a high vibration engine (small displacement diesel 4 cylinders or less) you need to have strong bolts as others have already said (metric grade 10.9 - not 8.8) and they should have lock washers on them. And depending on how the transmission is mounted, having all four block bolts installed could be instrumental in reducing vibrational stress on the bolts. This appears to require a different design of mounting plate that goes from the rubber mount to the block. I can definitely see how 2 grade 5 bolts in that application would shear off - especially if there were no lock washers on top of THICK plain washers to maintain consistent torque. If soft thin washers were used that collapsed, you have the start of bolt movement in the mounting plate which results in dynamic vibrational shock loading that winds up shearing the bolts off. So basically three suggestions: 1 - stronger bolts, 2 - thicker class 8 washers and lock washers, and 3 - if possible, fabricate a stronger 4 bolt mounting plate out of 1/4 " steel flat stock (be sure to heavily coat with rust preventative primer and tough, hi-temp finish enamel. The drill/easy out finger crossing segment was priceless! 😂

You need a set of left handed drill bits. And high quality easy-outs.

SIERRA, Use a mixture of 50% alcohol with 50% white vinegar in a squirt bottle. Dry your ear with tissue, then apply a squirt of the mixture in each ear...the alcohol will help dry your ear canal, and the white vinegar will create an acidic environment that will help prevent bacteria growth. It will burn a bit the first few times you use it. If you go to a drugstore you can buy swimmers ear medicine and it's alcohol and acedic acid which is vinegar. My Ear, nose, throat Dr. suggested this concoction.

As a scuba diver I can attest 50/50 alcohol and vinegar works great.

Last time I said I was going to remove an alternator "real quick" it took two working days. Ford Maverick 2.0 was such a pleasure to work on 🙃

His boat engine room has so much more room to work and get to the engine with than a car does. I have a 2006 and the engine compartment is completely full of engine and computer stuff.

@@RiverWoods111 Older cars were so much easier to get your hands around. The Ford Capri Mk.1 1600 V4 was amazing. Huge bonnet with a really tiny engine

I would be one mad customer. For what the boat cost you just showed it was in n o way worth it. Its one thing to have something break that was done correctly its completely another to show that a company is cutting corners at your expense. Great job fixing it but the amount of boat issues from new boats on other you tube channels is incredible and definitely is a poor reflection on the boat building industry at this point in time.

@@jackdbur So your saying yanmar goes around and installs every motor it sells? I dont think it does and the boat builder installed it....incorrectly apparently

@@vic2265 Obviously you haven't seen how engines come in their boxes they come complete with the engine mounts installed in the box . Other wise they would be destroyed by sitting on their oil pan .

Another very good episode. 😄 Sorry about the engine mount bolts they probably had a rookie working on it or something, obviously whoever put them in didn’t do it correctly. I’m sure you’ve already come to the same obvious conclusion.

Glad you were able to fix the problem, for now, It looks like a manufacturer problem. Possibly too ridged of a mount.

You need the diameter of the bolt in thread engagement length at a very minimum 1.5 is adequate the way they drilled they look to be grade 3 , grade 5 should be adequate 8 is over kill and not as ductile. I think the alternator bracket got installed with the original bolts they should have been longer . Your doing the right thing in my opinion.

I think you should replace the engine mount bracket and get the driveline realigned. The vibration should be shouting somethings wrong. Good luck
