I would be honoured to have the chance to watch a saddle making series. your work is astounding and the amount of information you have in every video is brilliant. So glad to have found you as i start out working with leather.

I must not be normal because I hate hard seat saddles. A nice gel or foam padded trail saddle is a lot more comfy to me. But if I had this saddle, I wouldnt mind the hard seat at all and I'd even put it on display in my living room after each ride lol!

Welcome back Don! You're such a valuable asset to KZbin leather workers. Looking forward to some great tips this year. I think you're right on the money about showing techniques and little projects rather than building a whole saddle. Lots of us are still learning and/or can't afford to buy an entire hide to make a saddle at this time without more experience.

A True Craftsman. That is 1 fine rig there. You done 1 heck of a good job on that saddle. I only wish I could tool that good. I had a customer 1 time ask me to price him a fully carved saddle so I priced it to him & he felt like I was trying to screw him around. LOL, he said damn all you are doing is slapping some leather on a piece of wood. I explained the cost & the time factor & he actually said saddles are all over the internet for $400.00 to $500.00. LOL, I just told him to buy 1 of those saddles as to me arguing about what it takes does not sink in on some. He & most of the public don't have any idea on material cost of building a saddle. Like you said over $1000.00 just in materials alone.. He also had no idea on the time as he thought a saddle could be built in just a couple of days. LOL.

That came out nice! I like to watch saddle making videos. I know that a saddle is very much an upper level project. For several years I repaired friends saddles, taking rubbings of the original tooling and doing my best to match it. Most of those were production and semi production saddles. I have always wanted to build a custom saddle but have never done so. I have made holsters, belts , wallets, ect. Many years ago I began making my own patterns for tapaderos, flank cinchas, breast collars/martingales, pulling collar, saddle pockets, and various pouches over the years. Like you I'd recommend learning those skills for any leather worker. Your advise there is purely golden. Probably the best beginning tack projects were the headstall, slobber straps, spur straps and breast collars. For those wanting to try pattern making, I found poster board and other large heavy paper products really come in handy. I have rarely messed up leather, due to spending enough time cutting and fitting the paper patterns to be sure every thing will fit together properly.

Can I ask, on curved surfaces, should you tool the flat piece then wet mould it, or wet mould to shape then tool. I find that sometimes the tooled pattern gets distorted or looses definition if I wet mould after tooling. Thank you
