This week we cast our minds back to our very first bikes. Surprisingly they're quite modern by current cycling standards, with integrated stems, 1 X groupsets and wide tyres. We've also got some spy shots of some new bikes and some great new shoes from Fizik 🔥

What was your first bike? How much do you remember..? 🚲
@DaanHoogland

:) I remember it had a triple top tube, an oversized middle and two tiny slightly more bend along the side. I used to ride the "vesting Naarden" of road and it got more beating then any bike deserves but still got passed on in full working condition to a lot of my younger kin. No idea what the brand was or where it ended out, but i imagine it just faded away...

It was a Franken-bike that my dad(a shop teacher) cobbled together from 3 or 4 bikes that folks in our neighborhood had thought broken beyond repair and thrown out. It wasn't the prettiest thing, but solid steel and could stand up to many, many wrecks.

The only thing I can remember about my first bike - apart from it being a single speed - is setting it up side down on its saddle and handlebar (sorry Jon, I didn't know better at the time), spinning the cranks by hand to make the rear wheel go as fast as possible and then accidentally sticking my right index finger between chain and front chainring, making an entire revolution of the cranks before getting unstuck. I must have been 5 or 6 years old. Still have the scar to prove it.

My current bike is my first real road bike, I'm 13 and its a 2015ish Trek 1.1 with an Aluminium Frame and carbon fork. I upgraded it with a pair of Mavic CXP 22s, that I got for free (dont ask how), and Look Keo Classic Pedals. Its got a basic Shimano Claris groupset and I ride it every day, and recently I did my first race too!

First Bike was an apollo V, in baby blue. Next door neighbour was cleaning out his shed, he was a velodrome rider......I had no money. Gave me the bike on the condition I would mow the lawns for the next few months. In between used my BMX bike with a milk delv bins to deliver newpapers....rounded up enough money to buy Suntour group and convert that back to a rode bike. And so started the biking journey. 32 years on, and still loving it.

Great show, looking back at your first set of wheels! My first ride was a candy-apple red Schwinn 564 that I got for my 17th birthday in 1990. It had a 14-speed Shimano Exage groupset with biopace chainrings. I upgraded the brakes and chairings, then crankset, saddle, and pedals before wrecking it in a crash in 1992. I may be wrong, but I think It was one of the last aluminum Schwinn frames made in their Greenville, Mississippi factory. I remember it fondly.

First bike after a three wheeler was a little red Phillips with white metal mudguards. Next came my first 'proper' bike, I bought a second hand Jack Hateley frame for a fiver and built it up one Saturday which cost another fiver, fixed gear, one brake and toe clips. Rode it for miles with mates and with a cycling club. This was all back in the fifties and early sixties.

I don't remember the brand of my first bike. It was probably from a department store. My best guess would be Sears. It would have been Christmas of 1976 and I do remember that it was black and had a yellow plastic "gas tank." On either side of the fake tank was a sticker with a two tone image of a man's head in a hat very reminiscent of Clint Eastwood in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly with an eyepatch. Underneath it said "Hombre." I know what your thinking... "Badass!" right? Well me and my friends thought so anyway. Keep in mind that it was 1976 and the first Cray supercomputer had just been released with a 64 bit processor, 8.39 megabytes of memory and 303 megabytes of storage, all for a mere $7.9 million! The Concorde had it's first commercial flight so that eventually all of us would ride on supersonic jets. Star Wars was still being filmed, the Apple Computer Company was formed, the Ramones release their self titled debut album (on vinyl!), California wines beat French wines in a competition involving a blind taste test for the first time, the U.S. celebrates it's bicentennial, the first class of women were enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy, Viking 1 landed on Mars, Bruce Jenner won the Olympic gold medal for the decathlon, the first outbreak of the Ebola virus occurred, the Muppet Show premiered, Patty Hearst was sentenced to 7 years for her involvement in a bank robbery after her kidnapping by right-wing extremist group the SLA, the band U2 formed, IBM releases the first laser printer and I was oblivious to it all when I was on my bike. Thank you Wikipedia for refreshing my memory, but I do actually have vague memories of many of those events. In 1981 I replaced that bike with a Diamond Back Team Pro in dark blue metal flake and blue alloy parts. I still have most of the parts as well as the frame of my Diamond Back but I sold my "Hombre" to a neighbor and it was later stolen from his front yard. I do hope bike thieves get a special torture in Hell.

The first bike a bought was a yellow 10 speed at the hardware store (small town) in 1979. rode it everywhere. we moved to a house in the country about 4 miles from school. in the spring i started riding to school. pretty steep hills. no one every explained the gears to me so it was always in 1st gear up and down the hills. i would beat the principal to school. track coach found out where i lived and what i had to climb to get there and get home he told me to just show up for the meets. told him it wouldn't be fair.

That recently happened to me. I had long hair that took me two years to grow to the overall length that I desired. I was sporting the Laurent Fignon look complete with ponytail and eccentric professor glasses. Last week, I went into Great Clips (big national chain of budget haircut salons) and asked the “stylist” for just a trim to get rid of the split ends and to add a layer or two. It was a rookie stylist who just cut it all down like that (I now suspect that’s all he knows how to do), then he said something about his artistic vision of the perfect style for me. Oh well, it’s becoming an unusually hot summer this year, so perhaps a blessing in disguise.

Could Jon explain how adding up can equal taking away? I admit My maths isn't brilliant but now I'm confused. The new Fizik shoes are really confusing. I do know thing about them. The more you spend the less you get.

First bike ? Dont think bikes where invented back then... 😁 Nobody talked about helmets and stuf, and we kids where left to bike around on the roads, in the forrest or where ever. It was freedom, if you just showed up for homework and food on time. Absolutely great ! My first racebike was at age 11. Silver, Reynolds, Campagnolo, Mavic.

I have the 2016 SCR FF, amazing bike. Pressfit bottom bracket is a pain tho. But the new models upon observation, have internal Cable routing and threaded bottom brackets. Might upgrade the frame if I ever find a white and red one lol.

I also have a Giant CADEX 980C with a bottom bracket that might need fixing in the future. It makes slight clicking noises. I also had to replace the headset and some worn out parts. Other than that, it is still rocking the Campagnolo Chorus 8 speed. Did anyone here hear of those early carbon bikes just falling apart where they are glued together? I am a bit concerned because a technician in the bike shop told me that he wouldn't ride that bike because of that. It feels pretty solid and I can't see any cracks in the tubes.

The bottom bracket on mine hasn’t been repaired 🤷🏼‍♂️ I had the frame checked before I decided to build it. Every picture I’ve seen online they have the same darker material on the lower lug.

@@hamishmcdonald1295 There are multiple 980Cs which primarily differ in color afaik. My bike's bottom brake looks different. Let's hope our vintage carbon bikes don't break down!
