We love finding quirky places to stay all over the world, but this is our first time hiking to an overnight camp! 🏕 Luckily we survived with only a few aches and pains and didn’t have any run-ins with the mountain lions that live in the area…only friendly armadillos. 😅 But now, it's back to the RV Renovation!

Enjoyable as always. I'm not a super hard core backpacker but it's so fun to watch people who have never done it before give it a try and always a good plan to do a quick out and back to get your feet wet! Also..lol at those meals at REI. I never buy them. Pro tip: the 99 cent packages of knorr pasta or rice and beans from the grocery store is where it's at.
@GrumpyForester

...or ramen with Lipton soup mixes or spilt-up packages of Bear Creek soups or pasta or... There are a lot of plain ol' grocery store choices that are light-weight and that can work just fine without spending the money for "glamping" gourmet backpack foods that are featured at REI. I love REI for their gear, but I steer away from their food choices...

You have to get one of those cheap $2 pool mattresses and use that under you as well when camping, cheap, lite weight and makes it a lot more comfortable.

The more you travel, the more you see that there are so many wonderful things in the world. It can be difficult to settle for something great when you can see that there could always be something better just round the next corner. Travel can sometimes simply be about a quest for perfection. This quest for perfection that we are looking for,we found just now in your video so the only that we have to say on you: Huge thank you and keep going!!!!!!

I think the reason you hated it so much was... 1. Texas might be in the top 10 worst states to backpack in... (its ugly) 2. Gear is expensive because its comfortable. Walmart crap is not going to cut it. 3. Going backpacking with a goal in mind is waaaaaay more fun than just camping. That Goal could be hiking a large peak, getting a photo you have researched, fishing an awesome alpine lake, finding an animal you have always wanted to see, Complete a difficult trail. I have a entire channel dedicated to backpacking and spending time in the outdoors haha. Try backpacking in Montana, Washington state or some other amazing state. You might like it more. hahahaha Much love!

Made me giggle this one. I pushbiked from London to Paris on my own in my teens. Just four paniers on the bike. You can go a lot more basic than that guys but always take really good lights and torches and all the pots and pans need to pour easily. Admittedly I didn't need to worry about bears or mountain lions so I slept really well. I padlocked the tent zip to stop intruders... maybe do that. One of my friends did end up with a cow in their tent on one of their trips in Wales. But loved this and it made a great vlog.

Colorado Bend is one of my favorite little-known parks in the US! I used to take a group camping there every year. I’m glad you saw the wild armadillos (watch out, they’ll eat your s’mores!), but sad you missed the hike to the awesome waterfall and cascading stream that you can hike up in the water (very refreshing in Texas summers).

Loving the kanban board! Hope 'order wine' is in the 'in progress' column. Also, living in Australia I know people think we have dangerous animals here. But mountain lions? Yeah we don't have animals that will stalk you in the night or while you're peeing (except huntsmen spiders... the will run AT YOU!). Jeez, I've seen mountain lions up reasonably close (controlled environment) & they're frikkin scary. Plus you got scary snakes too, & scorpions & spiders...I've even seen something over there that's a scorpion x spider! 😱 You can keep your mountain lions & bears and we'll keep our various prehistoric poisony things... that armadillo was super cool though! Nice vid👍🏼

Walmart has the best budget camping and backpacking stuff. Also Amazon. Key is keeping it simple. And know what is worth paying out a little extra for. Like I would have bought a good sleeping pad from REI and a comfy backpack, then got everything else from other cheaper stores. One mile of backpacking isn’t too bad so you can even go without a high end backpack but a sleep pad for me is a must. Walmart sells some really inexpensive mountain house meals. Amazon has lots of great options too.

I don't know how I would fare with mountain lions. When we camped at Lake Tahoe, we saw black bears and it was simultaneously awesome and terrifying. And we love good coffee when we camp, too! We've started to get lazy and have been buying Cafe Bustelo instant coffee. It's surprisingly good. All the best on wrapping up the RV! Looking forward to videos of your first trip - if you make it out to Northern California we would love to buy you a beer! Or bourbon...

I love seeing you guys out on the trails! As a hiking vloggger, I came to your channel primarily for the van conversion content, but I'm a long distance backpacker so this video is right up my alley! Not gonna lie... I spent a fair proportion of this video juding your gear choices (😂 soz... I'm a gear junkie) and also your luxury items!!! Chairs, pillows & the SIZE of that tent!! On long distance trails you have to be so conscious of how much weight and bulk you're carrying, but then I guess that's because you're hiking 15-20+ miles per day! But then I remembered you guys are just out there for the experience, and that's the important thing! Little tip for next time (if there is one)... see if you can borrow an inflatable sleeping pad from someone. They can be expensive to buy, but they will save your backs and help you get a much better night's sleep! Also, great choice on the stove 👍👍 P.S. A $20 tent from Target?!?! Gotta love America! Happy hiking from New Zealand! Hope to see you back here soon!

When I first got my REI membership about 25-30 years ago it was a great place to get camping gear at reasonable prices. I got lots of great stuff that I was able to afford with the small paycheck I got in my first couple of jobs as a young man. Then about 15 years back the prices started skyrocketing and REI began stocking el primo camping gear...very nice but expensive as all get out! I dropped my membership 5 years ago and haven't bought anything from there since. It's a shame cause I used to be a fan of the place.

I don't know that we'd ever do a full thru hike, but we'd for sure love to do some portions of those trails! We're always blown away by people who complete the big ones. Your knees and ankles must be in much better shape than ours 🤣

@@Theendlessadventure haha, forgot about your history of twisted ankles! There are definitely some amazing sections on both trails you that you could do 🙂. Can’t wait to see the Van when it is finished.

Maybe this camping trip will get you motivated to get the camper finished. Pretty sure you'll sleep so much better in the camper with a whole bunch more peace of mind. Lol
