So many channels are full of hype and artificial polish. I've been toying around with doing a video series on wilderness travel, cold weather survival - that sort of thing. I have a lot that I'd like to share after 50+ years of knocking around in the great outdoors, and your low-key but very informative presentation gives me an excellent example that you don't have to be slick to succeed. One other thing. As a veteran sea kayaker, I have a deep appreciation for those of you who venture out on the last great wilderness on the planet. Fair winds and five stars for a job well done. Liquid ginger added to water before you start sailing stops the crew getting seasick. sipping it as you go on the voyage. i used to give out medication as the medic on board but they still got sick, did not remember feeling unwell and became useless anyway. Few drop added to water and your good to go. Oh and it will taste the same going down as it does coming up if its administered too late.

@allynonderdonk75773 жыл бұрын
Since you have two engines, you should only run one on long passages. Catamarans do it all the time, so I would wager you can too. Think about it! Half the run time on both engines, and half the maintenance and fuel costs. The performance hit is typically half to one knot of speed. Diesels will only give good service at around 2/3 throttle. So if you run two at lower revolutions per minute there may be damage over time.
@slashsplat3 жыл бұрын
I was instructed that this is correct when piloting a 55' ChrisCraft decades ago.
@marinesurveygroupltd73223 жыл бұрын
You have to check shaft cooling & gearbox lubrication for the non working engine thou if it's free spinning. Easiest to lock the shaft but increases drag
@peterives89313 жыл бұрын
With a properly cooled engine and a correct thermostat, low RPM operation will actually result in less wear and less fuel consumption for the distance. Engine running too cool at low RPM, yes, this can cause wear and lower fuel efficiency. I run my Perkins 4.236 at 1,500 rpm for days or weeks at about 1.0 GPH. Add more power and the fuel burn is exponential. Yes, I want to see how Arktika does on a single engine. Sailing downwind seems the rudder didn't have very good authority, so lets wait to see about single engine operation.
@marinesurveygroupltd73223 жыл бұрын
You'll have to check with your engine manufacture for long running slow speed. My cat 3116s need a full load burn for 15 mins every 6hrs of slow speed. Running 1500rpm for days on end isn't good for injectors turbo's or carbon build up.

As someone who gets seasick before I even step on a boat Scopoderm is a lifesaver ^ Tried all kinds of medicine and witchcraft but that one really did the trick. Which is ironic as I'm a fisherman who works at sea 4-5 months a year. Side effects can change time to time. Mostly dry mouth but I'm pretty sure i've experienced minor hallucinations/confused perspectives as your pupils kinda go nuts when you use it for weeks

I don't know if this would help with seasickness but try a nasal decongestant, either pill or nasal spray. Another system to try is nasal irrigation with saline solution, or distilled water and a ph balanced salt compound from someone like Neilmed. The idea is to keep breathing passages free, which can sometimes affect middle ear.

I second that. Also they can be sucked or chewed to speed up the onset of their effect. This should mean that they don't need to be used until the sailor feels the onset of sickness. Apparently ginger, as a treatment for seasickness, led to the development of marmalade but I'll let someone else tell that story :-)
