I’m so glad to hear Pat Metheny anytime I can. I have a suggestion for your Pat Metheny experience. A few years back, he performed with the North Sea Jazz orchestra for a night of great music, and my favorite song was “are you going with me?” Pat is a flawless technician on guitar and in this rendition of the song, he is surrounded by musicians that are all fans. Also,…the video was well done.

I remember prodding Mauricio to request this song and he came through like a charm. Thank you Mauricio for it was a Metheny song in which Nick and Lex needed to hear for it's one of the most emotionally moving songs in the Metheny anthology and that is saying a lot. For those who do not understand Spanish the vocals sung by Pedro Aznar are like another instrument added to the mix and to me it's reminiscent of wind blowing through a forest of trees. Thanks again sir.

What you said about not understanding Spanish and Pedro’s voice is another instrument is so true I happen to be totally bilingual and do understand the lyrics but anytime I listen to a song where the singing is in a language unbeknownst to me I automatically think of the voice as just another instrument adding to the overall beauty of the song.

Lyrics in Spanish, voice: Pedro Aznar. "...I tossed a poem to the sea that took with it my questions and my voice Like a slow ship it got lost in the spray I asked it not to return without having seen the open sea and in dreams telling me of its visions. Even if it didn’t return I would know if it arrived. Travel the whole life on the blue calm or foundering in storms little matters the way if some port awaits I waited so long for the message that I forgot to return to the sea and thus I lost the poem I cried to the heavens all my rancor I finally found it written in the sand like a pray.. The sea beat in my veins and set my heart free..."

One of the most beautiful songs ever!! -Pat is hands down a living genius - please keep probing his work - it is an immense catalog! A few suggestions. 'Letter from Home' will make you cry every time - very short and extraordinary - Of course the legendary ' Are you Going with Me.' Also the gorgeous and magical ' September 15th' ( tribute to Bill Evans) - The Epic 'Third Wind' - and 'To the End of the World' AND - How about the song he won The GRAMMY FOR BEST ROCK INSTRUMENTAL SOLO!! Where he shreds!! Metal heads will listen up!! 'The Roots of Coincidence.' That one might be really fun since you have a lot of Metal listeners. 'Proof' would be great -insane trumpet solo by Cuong Vu!! ( Grammy nominated) and LODGER!!! from his new album Side Eye - I have no idea how long that guitar solo is but incredible and goes on and on - defies so much including the fact that he is 68 and plays better than ever!! Thanks for including Pat and Lyle and turning the music world on to them.

Really enjoy exploring the PMG with you! I’d always thought myself to be more a fan of Pat’s mainstream playing, but hearing these PMG cuts has made me dive back into that catalog. What a treasure trove of very distinctive music! A question for you: I’d always thought that Pedro Aznar, and later Richard Bona, did wordless vocals with Pat…but this one has real lyrics in Spanish? Have other Metheny/Aznar tracks you’ve heard had actual lyrics?

At 3:39 that solo you're hearing is from Pat's Roland guitar synthesizer. He started using it on the Offramp album in 1981. I read that Roland produced that guitar in 1978, but quickly pulled it off the market because of a glitch problem. So Pat just might be the only guitarist using this instrument. In an interview from Pat, he said "Most people think this sound is from the Synclavier. But it's really this old Roland guitar synth". Ironically, if you look at the credits for Offramp, it mentions that both Pat and Lyle were playing the Synclavier as well.

Ok, after that you want to quit Pat? You mentioned this song wasn’t “typical Pat.” That’s the great quality about Metheny. It’s all different. It’s not just fusion. Please reconsider. Take a break if you must. There are very few reaction videos on Pat. You guys are pretty much it. Most of us who loved Prog went to Metheny in the late 70’s when it all got too commercial. Where bands like Genesis and Yes had a great 4 year run, Metheny has been on a hot streak for over 40 years. He has consistently delivered on the promise that music showed us in the early 70’s. “The Way Up” one of the most innovative, bold and fresh epic ever. If you loved Close to the Edge, Suppers Ready, etc, it is in your DNA to find, listen and study this Uber masterpiece. And you have the platform to bring everyone along. Yes, it’s a weighty responsibility, maybe one you didn’t sign up for…but the result of turning your fans onto something that they are already destined to love…is a challenge I truly and sincerely hope you consider.
