She hit the nail right on the head. You need to really listen, get the lyrics and feel the song. It's a rollercoaster and it tells a story. Try "Fade to Black" and you'll get the same feeling. When you really listen, get the point of the song and enjoy the instumental parts, you really feel it.

"You have to actually hear everything and feel the song." This is the perfct way to describe metal. The music IS the story, it sets the mood, it sets the scene, it helps you feel the meaning of the song. The lyrics are the frosting on top. Metal is all about immersing you in the subject of the song.

This was recorded in 1988... still sounds killer 🔥🤘 The album is called 'And justice for all'... it was created under difficult circumstances. See, Metallica were involved in a tour bus crash in Sweden back in 1986. Their bassist Cliff Burton was killed (he was only 24 yrs of age) The 3 members of Metallica recruited bassist Jason Newsted to keep touring, but the trauma & loss hit them hard... they drank heavily... they gave Newsted a very hard time. When they wrote the album, James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) was especially angry after the loss of Burton... all his lyrics were literally, "everything sucks... everyone sucks" ... 'One' was inspired by a movie about a soldier who survives WW I, despite losing all his limbs & senses, left in a hospital... In another song "Dyers' eve", Hetfield unloaded on his parents for the damage done raising him in a strict Christian science household. Metallica did have more 'laid back' songs later... like 'The Unforgiven' ... 'Until it sleeps' ... 'The god that failed' ... 'Cure'

This isn't rock, this is...METAL!!! Yeah, as a guitar player I can confirm that there is some hand fatigue playing songs like this. Hand cramping can be a problem, especially if you have to stretch for certain chords. Fortunately with metal there aren't many finger stretchers, mostly power chords and bar chords. Kirks solos can be a bit challenging but this one is a lot of tapping so it sounds harder than it actually is.

This song and Master of puppets are similar that the tempo is part of the story. This song speeds up to represent the rage in his head but also the chaos of war. Notice the drums sound like machine guns. Props to you guys for giving this a fair shake. For someone that hasn't listened to metal before, Master of Puppets was a pretty 'in your face' introduction, but you still felt there was enough there to cautiously try some more. Good choice starting with the lyric video on this one (the official music video is definitely worth a watch now that you're familiar with One and its general story). I'd be curious to see what you think of Master of Puppets on a re-listen, months from now, if you've stuck with this metal exploration and gotten a deeper taste for it. :) Other songs to take a listen to should include 'Fade to Black', 'Orion' (this song is an instrumental, but it takes you on a journey), 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)'. All the songs people have mentioned (including me) are from the classic age of Metallica (first four albums). And, yes, as you mentioned in both of these songs, metal definitely leans into the instruments a lot. They use the instruments and the music to evoke a mood, to help tell a story, to set the feeling, the ambience, and generate emotion; they are at least as important as the vocals to the overall experience of the song, if not more so.

I started playing guitar because of Metallica, I got my degree in music years later, but somewhere in there I forgot what it felt like to hear this with awe for the first time and wonder to myself how it was possible to move fingers that fast. There is more to this song if you watch the video on your own time.. It actually has clips from the movie that inspired the song.. It is from the 1971 movie "JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN",,,, GUNS N ROSES "NOVEMBER RAIN" would be a great rock song to react to. Please react to these two from SNOW THA PRODUCT in one reaction. They are very short. (1:15 and 1:30). The first one "HOLY SHIT" is young Snow 11 years ago but she was already going after people way back then. The thing about rock music that I believe most people love is it is purely driven by emotion. Emphasis on the word DRiVEN. Whatever the mood of the songwriter is trying to convey through his words is captured in its most raw form through the music. We can all agree that listening to music without lyrics can still make us feel some sort of emotion. Rock however takes that emotion expressed and drives it to its core. Some say rock or metal is nothing but noise and while that may be true for some bands, other bands such as metallica they captivate the meaning of the song and it’s reason behind it perfectly with the music alone. The lyrics are just there to point that emotion towards a certain storyline or idea. With that being said, rock nowadays is nothing compared to what is used to be. But that can be said for almost every genre now. Music is not what it once was. But thankfully good music never truly dies. Even after it’s composer is long gone. The master craft is left to be appreciated.

I hear what you're saying about people on the Pink Floyd reaction, and true... there is a respectful way and non to communicate a message. BUT, I think what the people were talking about on the Floyd video is that they utilized the separate stereo channels far more than most bands, so when you listen to only one ear on a Floyd song, you're only getting half of the song. Some Led Zeppelin and Who songs are the same way... so ultimately I think that people were trying to explain something to you that would potentially help your enjoyment of a song, but did it in a poor way...

I get it, people say to wear headphones with Pink Floyd cause they have such a sonically produced sound that headphones help capture the full sound, that being said, as a father, being a parent comes before anything. Respect man and love the reactions.

So glad you decided to give Metallica another shot and sounds like it worked out better even for you lovely lass there. You mention how the instruments are so vital/key to the music. That is absolutely true. Another song with great instrumentals and feels is "Fade to Black" and another fantastic guitar song is "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Here's what I wrote on your previous Metallica reaction about how the instruments are vital to metal (though it was a few days after you dropped it) "Metal is actually more similar to hip-hop in that the lyrics of metal music are quite often or usually very deep and profound. It's often anti-establishment or anti-elite message in the music made for the the masses (the working class). The music composition is center stage however - you commented on how long they played their instruments before anyone said anything - it's like the musical score in a great movie scene, the music helps the audience connect with the dialogue and the scene to make you feel a sort of way. Metal does this. The lyrics are deep, and are meant to smack you in the head, often times the music takes you with them to let you feel what they are feeling in their lyrics - the instrumentation and music heightens that connection - that's the "soulful" comment/connection you were making. The music amplifies the lyrics, just as the music in a movie scene amplifies the way the audience is meant to feel at that moment over what is happening. I believe the more you listen, the more you will see that metal and hip-hop have so much in common. (i'm talking about truly good rap hip-hop - not the gucci gang drink-lean mainstream shit - i mean deep meaningful got it out he mud life struggle and philosophical shit that makes you think) in fact a lot of rap uses rock and metal bass beats to sample for their songs, cuz as you could hear, the instruments in metal are so fkn raw!" As for the haters and such - fk em. You do you. I agree that using headphones would help you appreciate the music more and there's a lot you miss without them - especially in pink floyd - but you were clear why you needed to have it off your ear, and your baby comes first, so there's no reason for people to give you hard time about that. When you get around to it, try listening again with both ears on if you want the full appreciation and experience. But the way I see it - you already enjoyed it and gave an honest and good reaction so fk em. If there is any constructive criticism, it's at 9:20. Understand that Metal-heads cherish the guitar solos. That's the frosting on a cake. Pausing and backing up whatever during a solo kills the vibe. There were people at that moment head banging and air guitaring and totally looking like they need a padded cell as they rocked out, and stopping it kills that moment of feeling carefree and crazy. It's like in Friday when Smokey tries to warn Craig to not fk up the rotation on the doobie -"puff puff give. puff puff give" Can't fk up the rotation. lol Seriously though that's a sacred cow to metal songs.

The only reason to wear headphones is to hear how the music was laid on tracks and the artistic ability to put feelings and things you cant hear or pick up just listening to the music on soeakers

I love that you understood the song without seeing the video. The video hit me hard as a teen. We used to watch Head Bangers Ball late and night and the video takes the meaning to a whole other level. You can physically see the desperation and understand that the soldier was a product of the Governments waging wars. Going through the Cold War and then seeing it come to an end there was a lot of liberation. It sickens me, literally sickens me as I see the world getting sucked back into wars for profit.

You're absolutely right. People who play guitar like these guys have super strong and tough hands, lol. I know a bunch of people who gave up on guitar once they realized how much hell it would put their hands through.
