5:58 I think Izzy's not homophobic, he doesn't approve of Edward liking anyone. He's like a codependent older brother. I'm pretty sure he had the same reaction to Ed having any feelings toward women (if that ever happened). He just doesn't like it when people have feelings, guy has some issues. :D (and a degradation kink...)
@TheNitpickChick2 жыл бұрын
I think you definitely have a point. While it feels like Izzy has some internalized homophobia when it comes to his attraction to others, like Lucius, I don’t think that’s the main core of his issues. (Besides his very obvious, and unaddressed, degradation kink lol) Izzy strikes me as a man who does not see, or does not want to see, Blackbeard as an actual person. He’s desperately in love with, and reveres, Blackbeard as a practically inhuman concept - a cold-hearted, badass pirate who takes what he wants, kills whoever’s in his way, and doesn’t care about mercy - who Izzy has put on an incredibly high pedestal. When the actual human being of Edward, not Blackbeard, starts to show through - when he actually starts to want other things and starts to open up emotionally, becoming happier and thus less bloodthirsty and cruel - Izzy balks at that, because his beloved and respected perfect vision of Blackbeard is being shattered, and he fights tooth and nail to shove Edward back down and get Blackbeard back. So yes, with Izzy it’s less about homophobia, for the most part, and more about him feeling deeply possessive of the concept of Blackbeard, while not caring about the actual person beneath that mask.
@loltadynicneni9132 жыл бұрын
@@TheNitpickChick Oh, thank you for this reply! I didn't know I would get an opportunity for more serious discussions about the show! :D I think the reason why he's so dependent on the emotionless, bloodthirsty image of Blackbeard might be because he himself wants to present as that? So it's kind of like a crutch, like something he can hold onto and mold himself according to? And simultaneously it's an authority he's dependent on for some reason, and exactly, he doesn't see Ed, he doesn't care about Ed, all he wants is preserving that crutch, that authority, because if he doesn't have it, he might not know what to do? But well, at the same time he almost became the captain of The Revenge and was fine on his own on multiple occasions. So I don't know, maybe I'm digging in the wrong spot.
@TheNitpickChick2 жыл бұрын
@@loltadynicneni913 Of course! I love deep dives into media I love. 😊 I think you’re on the right track. I think Izzy fears being emotionally vulnerable. He’s internalized the idea that he always has to be the tough one, the one in control, the one who people fear and obey. The only person he feels subservient to is Blackbeard, because Blackbeard is even tougher, even more in control, the one who people fear the most, etc. Blackbeard is his ideal, because Izzy sees that cold mask as strength, and if he were to take over for Blackbeard someday, he wants to be able to rule with the same iron fist. When Edward starts taking off the Blackbeard mask though - starts showing vulnerability, starts making friends, starts falling in love, etc. - I think it genuinely terrifies and disgusts Izzy, because if the god-like Blackbeard can be cracked open and become emotionally vulnerable, then what’s stopping that from happening to Izzy too? I have no doubt that Izzy is a tightly wound ball of repression, anger, and fear. He’s so paranoid about letting anything slip, that he lashes out to prove to others, and especially himself, that he’s still tough and cold and brutal. He’s basically a character who embodies toxic masculinity aboard a ship full of people who defy and subvert it, and thus feels threatened and on guard at all times. He’s a genuinely fascinating character to analyze, and I’d honestly feel bad for him if he wasn’t such a dick and wasn’t actively trying to drag Ed back into the toxic, miserable cesspool with him.
