You Asked For IT!!!! In this episode we are finally cleaning the exterior of the 401 Phoenix! It will take a whole lot of soap and elbow grease but by the end of the episode this old bird will be clean for the first time in YEARS!
It's amazing the difference a pressure washer and wash mitt can have on the layers of dirt built up on this plane. Will we be able to make this paint shine like new again or will it be lost forever to the elements? Find out in this weeks episode!

Then you could offer the Phoenix for the Dog Rescue Originations to transfer Rescue Dog's to the shelters or adoptive parents? Make A Wish Foundation for those who have never flown. With all the complications you've been having with engine 2 it's easy to become disheartened with the project. This clean is incredibly essential as it will breath new life and pride into the restoration, giving you that boost of morale and motivation needed to get her in the air. She's already looking incredible, and will look $1m with a fresh face of makeup. P.S. I'm praying you go for a bright interior with white leather upholstery to really make her sparkle.

5:40 I got curious and did a little research. It turns out the air intake is protected by something called an inertial separator or intake deflector which directs heavy particulates away from the engine intake, allowing debris free air to pass through. Apparently the amount of non-freezing rain that would be likely to get caught up into the engine intake won't damage the engine and isn't enough to impede combustion.

Awesome seeing the visual progress!!! Couple of things -- Never use actual Simple Green on aircraft - there is tons of documentation showing that it causes corrosion. It's also a good idea to tape off the static ports and cover pitot tubes to make sure water doesn't get in where it's not supposed to. Yes, you are partially correct in that aircraft are designed to be protected of water ingress while flying. Almost all engine intakes are designed with an "S" shape or diversion of some sort whereas water (rain) or ice-sand-rocks-etc will continue to flow past and out instead of into the actual intake. Be very careful using high pressure water on the deice boots as it can damage them and they are super expensive! Lastly, as you learn more and more, I would start with Chapter "12 Servicing" which should cover basic aircraft care including caring for paint and exterior. Also in general, it would be a great idea to go look in the AMM (Airframe Maintenance Manual) before you jump into anything really. Go start with the chapter Description & Operation, then into the actual task you are trying to achieve. Taking the extra time to familiarize yourself with the actual manufacturer procedures will hopefully prevent you from damaging a component, save you time, and keep you from getting into something that is over your head. When the time comes -- If you're sitting across the table from an FAA Rep asking for an airworthiness, and you can faithfully explain how you took the extra time to self-teach yourself prior to bringing tools to the airplane, that will be better seen by them as opposed to the nightmares that sometimes occur from "non-certificated" individuals performing work that they shouldn't be. 14 CFR 65.81 is the general privileges and limitations that I can do having an A&P. And 14 CFR 43 appendix A subpart C is the limitations that an aircraft owner may perform without the FAA getting upset. You would be smart to read that many times and learn it well in order to stay out of trouble and also speed up how soon this plane gets an airworthiness again. Friendly advice that's all... Get some of us A&P's to work on it with you, and then the possibilities will be THAT MUCH MORE and still remain legal.
@mark9531
@mark9531 2 жыл бұрын
Good evening Sstantial. I agree with everything you have said. Three things: (Long time Aarow, Aztec, Lance owner, here. Not an A&P) ~He has an A&P directing and watching over what he is doing. No mechanic can go from getting a 50 year old dump truck to run and drive TO "kicking the tires and lighting the fires" and getting a 53 year old IO 550 to start with the simple "air-fuel-spark" formula. ~The LEAST he will have to do to get that thing airworthy is an annual. An A&P would replace everything he has tinkered with doing a thorough Annual. And unless he can find the Maintenance Log Books, and with 1600 TBO on those older IO 550s, he is probably looking at overhauls or remans on both engines. ~I am not telling you anything you don't know much better than I do.

As a contributor I request RR to give a plan to utilize the funds raised that incorporate this suggestion. The goal should to be to do things to convince FAA to allow it back to flight status. Otherwise it's an expensive museum piece (well, it would be a good looking museum piece) or perhaps a good looking gate guard at the FBO.
@mark9531
@mark9531 2 жыл бұрын
@@sehsamudra There is no reason the FAA would ground this plane. Nothing about the condition of this plane makes it incapable of being airworthy. FAA WILL provide an supplemental type certificate STC, and a certified A&P has to certify that the plane is airworthy, and he is good to go. ____________________ Now, for the A&P to certify it is airworthy could be as little as a very thorough Annual, verifying all ADs are met. Or rebuild/reman both engines and both sets of props. And a lot of avionics updates. And he has a big AD on the wing spar. He has a lot of work to do, and a lot of expense. But it is certainly doable. _________________________________ He either finds the Aircraft Maintenance Log Books, or the A&P starts a new set using existing "Yellow Tag" parts, and starts from scratch. Parts and work on an airplane are aged by hobs meter (hours flown), not dates. The fact that the plane has sat for 15+ years does not mean the part/labor has to be replaced/repeated. Yellow Tags on parts have hobs reading. That is what is important. Finding the old logs could save him $100-$150K if the engines and props are not out of TBO. The previous owner's old A&P or shop knows where those log books are

@@sehsamudra Hey. Now don't take my word for anything. I am sure he has a good A&P advising him. I just know he is not the first to have a plane that has sat for a decade and lost log books. A&Ps know how to get an airplane back up in the air, legally and safely. There are a lot of little more detail to get an 8 place pressurized turbo twin in the air than some one-lung puddle jumper. That A&P does not want to jeopardize his license. And that pilot doesn't want to be the FIRST to the scene of the accident.

When you worked on the right engine after getting the left one started, you changed the oil and put in 20w-50. Then you had problems getting the motor to spin fast enough to get the oil where needed and to get the motor to fire and start. A suggestion to help you start that thing, even though you said you were pulling it anyway. An old trick I learned from my father 55 years ago that he learned back in the thirties is this. I think I heard you say you didn’t actually fully fill the motor with oil. Drop in a couple of quarts of diesel - it’s a lubricant anyway. It might thin your 20w-50 enough to spin that motor up faster. OR, if you want even more rpm, use kerosene. We used this trick on motors which had set frozen for years and it almost always worked. My father used it on Chevy trucks back in the 1930s in Montana at 20 below. Worked on them too.

Several years ago while working for a Aero Club we were able to get a 310K that had been a drug seizure. It had sat on St Simon's Island, GA for 10 years. After working on it for several weeks we were able to got it where we could fly it back to Charleston with a ferry permit. The engines were in surprisingly good condition. The worst part was the landing gear, the guy that flew it to Charleston wasn't happy I stipulated it be flown gear down but once he saw it on jacks with the gear mid travel and not moving up or down was glad I done that. You've got a lot of work ahead of you.

hummm I guess my question about the current FAA registration has been lost in the mail? WAS the A/C truly Abandoned if the FAA registration page shows it being registered to S&K Rentals since at least 2020?

I support the shenanigans, but I'd never let that thing's wheels leave the ground. Props to you for taking this on, I can't imagine the amount of money it'll take to get that airworthy again. Looking forward to this journey 👌👌

You ought to open all the inspection panels and look inside, especially on the wings. If there's a lot of corrosion in the spars you want to know about that now, and not after putting a lot more work into it.

I've been thinking the same thing since this project began. There will be a ton of hidden damage. That mouse (likely mice) inside could also have done a lot of damage to wiring bundles. Having an experienced A&P look it over before putting a bunch of money in it would be money well spent.

I'm shocked you're washing a plane inside the hangar as opposed to outside. I thought the owners wouldn't want a messy hangar.

Idk. Hard to believe an airplane in that condition will ever pass inspection and meet the requirements needed to fly. But we’ll see. Definitely interesting to watch!

I saw a video that explained that half a million already gets you a 30 y/o tiny jet. Total running costs are the same per year, though. So it makes sense to rent it out much as possible, give the pilot airtime and cover running costs much as possible.

I used to detail cars, when a car has been neglected for a long time it takes 3 good details before you get things back in shape. If you’re using simple green, I wouldn’t expect much. If you’re just buying from a local store, purple power would be my choice.
