This video round table was a wonderful idea and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I have 13 handhelds including my 3 different switches. My favorite is the one I am playing with at that moment. I try to rotate which one I am playing with. I often take my Anbernic nano when I’m going somewhere and know I’ll have about 15-30 minutes of playtime. I’m 65 and the screen is a little small for my eyes but I enjoy it quite a bit. I’m in awe that this tiny device is cable of doing so much. Keep up your great channel. I liked seeing your retro cozy corned. Well done.

I understand why it didn’t happen… but I wish that everyone had nailed down their one, most preferred handheld and then dedicated time to explaining why. One or two of them kinda did, and that was valuable to me. Many of us are looking at this crowded market and wondering what to buy (or what to buy *next*), but very few of us are in the market for three or four devices to buy all at the same time.
@uncaringbear
@uncaringbear 2 ай бұрын
The challenge is knowing what you really want and prioritize in a handheld. For example, how portable do you want it to be? Which systems do you want it to emulate well? What about price. I think a lot of people simply don't have clear answers to these questions, and that's understandable, and that leads to the inevitable realization that there isn't a single device that is perfect for everything you want in a handheld, and it's always going to be a personal choice!
@rhythmandblues9302
@rhythmandblues9302 2 ай бұрын
@@uncaringbear Sure, *but*, it would’ve been interesting to hear a group of experienced users state the one device they favoured over all others, even if only at that particular moment in time - and even if only for their own, highly subjective, reasons; because I might share those same priorities. Saying, “these are my favourite three or four” is not what I came for. That’s a cop-out.

I do appreciate that there were a TON of people chatting up high end android. Despite the ease of use for a dedicated Linux handheld, I feel like investing a little time into android is worth it. It's not too difficult. All that being said, for me I think 35xxSP + G-cloud + Gaming PC. I used to favor the steam deck, but the G-cloud is efficient, light, and can handle up to and including GameCube. But the real magic is streaming your high end PC to your G-cloud and playing anything. Alternative to the G-cloud? Steam deck OR another high end android device like Odin or Odin 2 are ALSO good choices for a mid tier device. High end gaming PC is self explanatory. Most compatibility, most power. The 35xxSP? Pocket friendly, nostalgia, solid 8 & 16 bit performance and compatibility.
@TechDweeb

I'm super with ya. The G-cloud is so freaking comfortable and the BATTERY just lasts FOREVER. Can't argue with retro gaming on that thing.
@Jemmer75
@Jemmer75 2 ай бұрын
The G Cloud actually brought me to the retro handheld scene. I got it to have a "dedicated" Xbox streaming device (sister to the PS Portal), and caught that another benefit is that it can emulate retro consoles well. So I tried that out and have been hooked ever since. I only need/want to emulate up to GameCube and she handles that well, at least those games that I want and can't get elsewhere. That being said, there are lots of great little devices and I can't stop buying new ones. With all the RG35XX H love here, I will have to pick that up. The Odin 2 is bit pricey for us Canadians, so I'll hold off a bit.

For on-the-go I absolutely love my PowKiddy RGB30, have it filled with everything from Dreamcast/PS1 to Atari 2600 games on there. When at home though I use my MacBook Pro (Intel 2019), primarily for old computers (Amiga, MS-DOS, ST, etc) and the more powerful consoles (PS2/PS3/Gamecube/Switch). It's super flexible and OpenEmu is a fantastic front-end for a lot of 8 to 64 bit systems. Shout-out to my old Anbernic RG35XX with MinUI as well. It was a super nice compact device I used a lot to play Sega-CD on until I upgraded to the RGB30.

I would say the miyoo mini plus with OnionOS, my retroid pocket flip (rip to them no longer being made), and my Anbernic RG405M. I enjoy playing games on these devices. I love my Miyoo Mini Plus and I've sunk in like 8hrs into the The Sims 2 GBA on it. I also have the RG Nano as well and I love how aesthetic it looks. I'm wanting to get the Odin 2 Mini because of the Vita like design and the white Odin 2 Mini is also iconic. I also have a PS Vita Slim & I play a lot of games on that. And of course DS and 3DS has been a blast as well, still loving the experience and can't get enough of it. The Miyoo Mini for it's size and ease of use with Onion OS for when I leave the house for work or to wait in line when I'm getting an oil change for my car. So little mentions of the Analogue Pocket! I think the Pocket earned a place!! - It is FPGA and what is runs, runs great. (GB, GBC, GBA, GG, NES, SNES, Genesis, Lynx, Neo Geo PC) not all have save states, but the originals didn’t had that either. - Because of FPGA, you don’t run into broken games. - The screen is phenomenal, games look so good. - it has the original ‘minui’. - you can use your original game cartridges. - Battery life is excellent. - it is not as Pocketable as the smaller ones, but is comfortable. I first had a RG35xx but it felt a little plasticy and the buttons rattle.

I've been looking at that one but I heard the stock software is crap and have heard mixed things about how much custom firmware fixes it. I've heard Spruce OS is pretty good though, so I'm still tempted.

Really surprised none of these guys mentioned the RG Cube (Currently my favorite device by a long shot). A few of these guys mentioned the RGB30 and I know they also have RG Cubes. I can't think of a single reason to go back to the RGB30 outside of Pico8 if you have a cube already. It is just a better and more capable version of the same thing. Specifically for me the battery issues with the RGB30 really killed that system after using it for a few months. The Cube doesn't have these issues and for that alone I doubt I will ever return to my RGB30. I had a list of complaints that I had built up over time for the RGB30 and the cube addresses every single one of them. Build Quality - The RGB30 feels like a toy, and is quite rattly. Ergonomics - The RGB30 is sharp and lacks grips. D-Pad - The RGB30 D-Pad has issues with false diagonals and feels kinda mushy to me. Touch - I originally picked up the RGB30 primarily for DS RPGs, and while it played fine, there were a few games that honestly suffered from a lack of touch input. Battery - The RGB30 battery indication and charging historically have a ton of issues, you never know how much battery you actually have left, and it doesn't accept standard charging or C-to-C. Sleep - The RGB30 doesn't have a proper sleep mode. Power - The RGB30 is just not strong enough to emulate my favorite system (GameCube). I never had any illusions that it would be able to play those games, but the Cube can, and in the same-ish formfactor. As stated before, the only place where the RGB30 feels better than the Cube IMO is Pico8. There is no perfect solution for playing P8 games on Android, but I know that this is something supposedly in the works. If we ever see a proper Pico8.apk with Splore, the RGB30 will pretty much be dead to me. Now I can totally see recommending it to someone who is looking for a more budget device, but what surprised me was seeing people who I KNOW have an RG Cube, still opting to play on an RGB30 instead.

I got a 16 hour shift today, and because of a block party yesterday, UPS didn’t deliver my Flipzizzle. I was so looking forward to trying it out (since my Rg353p short circuited). I’m glad to see it on so many people’s favorites list. Gotta get a second device with analog sticks tho.

Formally my default handheld was the Bittboy 3.5. I played the HELL out of that thing -- almost as much as I did my old DMG from back in the day. But I really missed playing SNES games so I decided to shell out for a Miyoo Mini Plus which was one of my wiser investments. Not only can I now enjoy all of my old SNES favorites, but it also opened up the world of DS games to me. There are more powerful handhelds than the Miyoo Mini Plus out there, but nothing I've tried can compete with it in ease of use. It's really the best handheld you can get in the $50 range and even if you can afford something more powerful, I'd recommend at least giving it a try.

For pocketable, take anywhere, it's the RG35XX H for me. For couch-playing, and a device that can handle just about anything, it's the Steam Deck. But the overall best device for me is my desktop PC. Playing on a my big 32" screen, listening to all the bleeps and bloops on real speakers is the way to go for me.

My favorite handheld for emulation is an Android phone, a OnePlus Nord20 with a Snapdragon 695 chipset. I got a new one for cheap, and it saves storage on my main phone....plus. it is like a backup phone, if anything should happen to my main phone, plus, I don't have to worry about buttons that are constantly attached to it going bad, since I can use so many controllers for it, but my go to controller for it is a telescopic GameSir controller.

I had an Odin 2 and I loved it but the smaller sticks ruined local game streaming for me.. so I sold it and used the money to buy both a Retroid Pocket 4 pro (for my emulation up to GameCube) and a Logitech G Cloud for game streaming. I have been super pleased with this setup

Amazing video as usual. My go to devices lately have been the Anbernic RG35XX Plus and the Steam Deck. I take my Anbernic with me most places because it's so pocketable. The Steam Deck is obviously much better for higher end systems, but I don't take that with me as much because its so much bigger (and more expensive).

I love seeing and hearing all these different gamers just talking and enjoying their different devices to play on. A great escape away from this crazy world. Handheld gaming for me has been pretty much nothing but my Odin 2 Max now. I've set it up in a way that it's not only the main console I'm using but it's become the main machine to use in multiple ways. For the emulators such as Retroarch I had this nifty idea. I have a controller for almost every emulator/core. Meaning I have a specific and exact more authentic controller for each and every emulator I use. A bunch of Brawler controllers, 8bitdo, retrobit, and more to round out the bluetooth and wireless variants. So, when I want to use the real controllers I use the Odin 2 Dock and that is hooked up to a really high end 4K Laser Projector, the NexiGo Aurora Pro, Ultra Short Throw. So with the CRT Shaders provided by RetroCrisis plus with my own tweaks it feels like I'm playing on a CRT but maybe even better. It hangs at the end of my bed and I'm loving life. There is a lot more to it but I don't wanna ramble anymore than I already have lol. Thank you for the entertainment as always TechDweeb and to everyone else in the video as well.

Yeah tis hard to stick to just one if you have multiple already, and if you tinker, or as Vlad would put it, baby your devices, it would be difficult not to use them when youve created that kind of attachment to them. My go-tos are Steam Deck for the most powerful emulation needs and of course pc gaming, Retroid Pocket 3+ for PSP mainly, as well as some PS2 and Android-native games, and the RG35XX H which i think is still the perfect entry device "objectively" in terms of power, price and functionality, which also has multiple solid firmwares that provide these.

So here's the thing. I've always been on the hunt for the one device that does it all. The GPD Win Mini 8840u hits all of the buttons for me. What makes it the top pick for me is putting Steam OS on it and a Grip I found that was designed to make it a little more comfortable. I was able to modify the grip and make it perfect for me. PC gaming, Emulation for everything that's out there and I also like to keep a bunch of movies and tv shows that I can watch at any time. The only drawback is the price.

What I have - rp3 don’t play much, steam deck play occasionally, modded Switch - play a lot. What I want - an updated Retroid flip, or an updated rg556 (needs a better processor). What I dream off - a dual screen clamshell with a 5inch or bigger screen that can play PS2, GameCube, 3DS/DS flawlessly - aggravated by devices that have smaller screens than my phone.

Vote tally. Tier 1 handhelds: RG35xx-SP - 3 RG35xx-H - 1.5 RGB20sx - 1.5 Miyoo mini plus - 1 RGB30 - 1 Tier 2 handhelds: Odin 2 - 3 RP4 pro - 1.5 Odin 2 mini - 0.5 Handheld x86: ROG Ally - 1 Loki Max - 1 Misc: Mini PC (Ayaneo AM02) - 1 Android tablet (Lenovo Y700 2023) - 1 Android phone - 1 Where the same person picks multiple from same tier without picking one over the other their vote is split. Where a person mentions a favorite then an alternative the vote goes to the favorite not the alternative (why steam deck didn't get in). My game, my rules, complaints will be returned unopened.
