Our Greenhouse - Dreams to Reality

Tag along with us on our dream of a little greenhouse that morphed into a larger size and project than we ever imagined!! Dreams to reality took quite a few months due to the demand for greenhouses that COVID brought. Greenhouse manufacturers once booking out 6-8 months are now booking out up to a year!!
As a side note: We thought it wise to hire a general contractor who had the relationships with the various vendors like concrete, electric, stonework, excavating etc. This particular general contractor had already constructed a few greenhouses here in Wisconsin. All that said my husband Steve played a major role in working with all the vendors to keep things moving and made sure things were being done up to standards. He is very particular and I am very happy about that!!

Your greenhouse is spectacular! You will love it so much. It’s an investment you will never regret. I love the design you chose. Thanks for the video and sharing all the details. I can’t wait to follow along and see the rest. My husband and son built my greenhouse in 2018. It has been a joy. I raise many plants from seed for my flower and vegetable gardens. My greenhouse is heated so I can over-winter many plants.

How beautiful! Love the Urns from Unique Stone in front! Lot of work especially with the stonework. I would love the patio you put in 20 years ago. I would love the bluestone as well. Dawn, thank you for this wonderful video- appreciated. How detailed yet succinct your description was… I have a specific question about your unique stone urns. We are in southern Indiana in zone six but used to live in Chicago with much more snow of course there along with freezing and thawing. So far, did you get any cracks or do you just make sure that you empty them with no soil and water source and do they stay outside or do they get tucked into the greenhouse? I find myself trying to winter over my containers with some of the plants in them in our greenhouse which is not heated and actually acts more as a cold frame. I will watch the other videos about your greenhouse now that I found you on KZbin. Thx

Hi Susan. The large urns outside the front of the greenhouse are cast stone and weigh probably about 350 pounds each so they’re in place never to be moved again! I do fill them in wintertime with Styrofoam and then put in my greens and such for the winter season. I put Styrofoam in because I removed the dirt and the Styrofoam actually acts a bit like a repellent of water. I do not have any cracks at all in these containers and this would be there 4th winter. I think I actually have a KZbin video on the Styrofoam and greens and such that I put in the container. If you go to my channel and look under videos and scroll through, you’ll find one where I’m just talking about the earns in front of the Greenhouse it’s an older one probably from two or three years ago.

It's beautiful! Just gorgeous. Your video was very interesting. We've just ordered our greenhouse from BC Greenhouse and are a little overwhelmed by the process. I have a couple of questions; 1) I really like the a proportion of your knee wall to your greenhouse. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your greenhouse and the height of your knee wall so that I can get an idea of what I might want to do? 2) A tinted roof! We opted for the polycarbonate roof because we live in southern Oregon and have hot summers. I really like the look of your tinted glass though and I'm wondering if you're happy with that? Hello Marty! Thanks so much. Yes the process can be overwhelming and long for sure. Dimensions are 20 feet long by 14 feet wide. The knee wall is 30 inches which is perfect imo because it hides stuff inside and gives the the GH nice height. We do think the tinted roof helps somewhat with heat but we are also going to install shade curtains eventually. We do like the look of that tinted roof as well. My hubby is working on how those are going to work. I’m not sure if I’ll even get them up this summer. We had a hot stretch with temps in the high 90s and with the vents open and the fans going it got to about 84 and I think the shade curtains will help just a little bit more on top of that. Great video! Congratulation on your project and BC Greenhouse. Curious about the forms used, interested to know where the contractor you used purchased them. Also was your contractor the same for the entire project and install of greenhouse?

Hello. Do you mean the forms for the poured concrete walls? If yes the contractor for that was Oostburg Concrete and they supplied those. The general contractor was the same Mueller Construction for the entire project (concrete, stone, heat, water, electric). We purchased the greenhouse from Wisconsin Greenhouse Company who also installed it. They travel the US installing the greenhouses they sell. I’m not sure if they sell anything but BCGreenhouses. Your greenhouse is absolutely beautiful! My wife is looking at building one soon and the Cape Cod is in the running for sure. What size did you build? Hello Rich. Thanks so much!! This is 20 by 14. Oh yea you guys have crazy weather there!! You should look into these which a truly made to stand up to super heavy winds and snow loads. You can also get them reinforced. We worked with Wisconsin Greenhouse Company and purchased this thru them. But BCGreenhouse out of Canada is the maker and they have both been great to work with. Wisconsin Greenhouse installs these all over the country. Some of them are huge!! Good luck to you!!

@@rb91458 yes of course. We have the Lopi premium cast iron gas stove. 40,000 BTU. We have not had an opportunity to use it yet as it came in around mid May. We are still waiting on it to get hooked up but seeing that it’s summer we won’t get a chance to use it until this fall. We chose this because of the look versus a big unattractive unit hanging up high. I am close to being ready to post a video on the inside and I will mention the Lopi and show it in my video. I think it all depends on ultimately what you want to use your greenhouse for. If you are strictly using it for growing year round you probably want to look at some thing more powerful. We will most likely not be growing or using much in January and February when we get the least amount of sun and the most frigid temps.

Hey Dawn, absolutely love your greenhouse. I've been researching and think I'm going to be able to pull the plug and order pretty soon. I am pretty sure I'm going to go with BC greenhouses. Need to connect this next week and ask a bunch of questions. Im planning on a much smaller model, but likely the Cape Cod, 8x12. I was planning on having a concrete pad poured but not the 1/2 walls. Did you do the 1/2 walls due to the larger size of your greenhouse? Yours is gorgeous. Will have to watch the rest of your videos! Thx for sharing!

Hello!! Yea for you! How exciting!! We did the knee walls to add a little bit of height to the space and just really like the look of the stone wall. I think it adds a lot to the space and makes it a permanent structure. It also adds cost. But do what’s right for you. Either way you will love your BCGreenhouse. Hello. Yes we did. Ours is rated to withstand extreme winds and heavy snow loads. BCGreenhouses tells you exactly how much and it’s on their materials etc. That was hard to get in writing from Hartley. Custom sizing literally whatever you want is easy to get, distance between the frames Hartleys is only 12 inches ours is 24. Cost is also a factor twice as expensive and we felt compared to BCGreenhouses not worth the extra cost. Why pay that much when quality wise we can get the same or better from BC. All beautiful don’t get me wrong and if you want to throw the name out there people know it but it just didn’t make sense for us. Good luck for whatever you chose. Hartley was the original high end greenhouse but, in my opinion, is now overrated. BC Greenhouses are every bit as beautiful, of exceptional quality and manufactured in North America. Would definitely be my choice!!

I think costs will vary by area, stone you use, do it yourself vs having someone do this for you. I can share the cost of just the glass greenhouse (does not include the foundation, stone, cap etc). $70k
