My husband and I visited these 3 villages in 2012 and loved them so much; the water, the waterways down the steep streets, the local shops, the people, the views, etc. We went on a little hike on the edge of one of the towns and got accompanied by a friendly cat "guide."

Hello James, do you have a personal relationship with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? The Son of God. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9. And please ask the Lord Jesus to bless you with wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and discernment. And please ask the Lord Jesus to forgive you for all of your sins and transgressions.

My favourite part of Spain. Drove through Sierra Nevada from Madrid to the coast in July about 15 years ago. Had to stop at a petrol station to fill in and got a sun stroke on the way to the cashiers :). Tarmac also melted runinig my new Converses.. Still it was worth it - beautifull scenery, completely deserted and those old abandoned sheds... Just magic - better than a time machine!

You two are amazing!! I am watching all your episodes. I am also a lover of history and love to know what countries eat in their cultures. You are convincing me like others to live in Spain being a dual citizen of the USA and Ireland. I have worked in many countries in Europe but I have not been to Spain. I planned a trip to Spain for the past 20 years plus. LOL. I keep going back to the same countries to live and work like Italy being half Italian by ancestry, England, Ireland, Czech Republic. Many people I have worked with in Europe always told me to try Spain and Portugal because they are amazing places.

Wow it’s crazy how similar these town are to rural Ranchos in Mexico. The one where my parents are from is very similar lots of little square houses all next to each other in a hillside with small alley ways. After all Spain did conquer Mexico so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise 🇲🇽🇪🇸

Just had to join in on this video. My husband and I have travelled almost the whole of Spain over the years on a motorbike. The diversity of this beautiful country never fails to astound us. From the verdant greenery of the north with its picos, through the cherry blossom countryside, the almost intoxicating perfume of the orange groves and the unbelievable farmyard smell of the “bull countryside “. All senses are magnified on a bike. You’re just so close to nature. I’ve eaten baby eels and what we call periwinkles in Asturia, robo in Córdoba and Paella in Valencia. How lucky am I ?... I’ve finally got round to learning the beautiful Castilian Spanish language and have had three separate weeks at Spanish language schools. It’s finally falling into place, although as we all know, the more you learn, the more you realise you don’t know! Thank you so much for doing these great videos. They are truly special.

I absolutely love these villages. Eating at a local restaurant is amazing and when I was visiting Andalusia area, I tried to seek out the local mom and pop establishments for an authentic feel of the area, but we went with the flow and realized most of the places to eat are small establishments and each place is special in their own right.

A good video with a lot of good filming in the beginning and some historical and cultural information. And you indentify the places you visited, which is essential for those who have no idea of Spain. I am surprised the chestnuts were so difficult to get. Here in the north of Portugal they practically give them away. We still have loads of them from last year. Great trip to Trevelez, the highest village in Spain, but I don't think the wine would be very good there. The view of the secadero was excellent. One of your best videos.

Yes! Tropical salad has this name because Granada coast is called "costa tropical", all the fruit and vegetables of this salad grow in the fields of Granada´s coastal villages. La Vega de Granada is so fertile specially next to the sea, towns like Motril and Almuñecar produces a lot of exotic products that can´t grow in any other place of Europe.

Spain always surprises me. The natural beauty of this place is similar to parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina USA...The David Lynch local bar “El secadero de jamones” experience, was a pretty accurate description. When you travel, I kill to find those surrealistic places! I tried the chestnuts in the streets of Lisbon, and I loved them...

Once again, I enjoyed your video. I'd love to see you in the North West of Spain travelling all the way from seafood heaven and sandy beaches in Galicia to cider in Asturias. Taking the train feve all along the cost from Oviedo to Galicia must make for a truly fantastic trip. A region thankfully forgotten by most tourists. The scenery is awsome. To me the most beautiful place in Spain.

A lovely video both. I love the Alpujarras, the western part of which are only one hours drive from my home in the Axarquia. The towns and villages have been completely restored and renovated compared to what you would have found 30 years ago when they were pretty run down. The climate is rather special as the altitude is so high and I always tell people to take a jumper apart from the height of the summer. The tell tale signs of the Islamic past are the church bell towers which were formally minarets. The style of food is not especially local and can be found in the Granada and Malaga regions. However, the jamon from Trevelez and Juviles is rather special and have Denominacion status unlike any other jamon in the Alpujarras or the country. It's by far the best serrano in Spain in my opinion. The air is so clean at that altitude (Trevelez being the highest occupied town in Spain) which means the jamon needs far less salt to cure it. A huge jamon Trevelez will only cost about $100 euros. There's not much to do in Trevelez except eat but it's a great place to plan a good walk or hire a horse. I love local stuff but the wine is rough. Food is hearty and portions massive as you found out. I laughed about the chestnuts because that is so Andalusian. If you're sharing from a common source it's every man and woman for themselves because even the Grannies in these parts take no prisoners. If you're too polite you'll get nothing. As is so often the case in Spain there are two or three histories. The old, in this case Muslim, history and we have to remind ourselves that the final expulsion from the Alpujarras was 1571. The following centuries were harsh when these places were repopulated by Spaniards from the North and became extremely disconnected and poor. Many people don't visit the eastern part of the Alpujarras such as Yegen, made famous by Gerald Brenan who settled there after his experiences in the First World War and marvelously described in his book South From Granada. The disconnected was so great that people thought he had been fighting the Moors. These mountainous villages extend all the way into inland Almeria and are very interesting for those with a taste of social history and want to get off the beaten track. I love this video because it highlights how doing things Andalusian style is wayward and physical. Everything goes upwards. My wife and I also go off the beaten track like you two. It also shows why Andalusia is so great because it's not just Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga. There are so many other great places and the landscapes are mind blowing but the history is harsh and painful. However, things have improved beyond comprehension a generation or two ago. In these times when I can't visit it's great to watch this. Thanks James and Yoli. WT

I didn't know hitch hiking was a thing in Spain, but with friendly people, I hope it's safe.

Love that Miguel Strogoff poster at Juan's place :-) 05:43 You guys should've stopped at Pitres, halfway to Trevelez, located in the "La Tahá" valley. It is less turistic than Capileira, Pampaneira and Bubión (less people), but the experience is deeper , meaning is more full of nature, quietness, irrigation water and less damaged villages. Next time maybe. Good video.

En Pampaneira también comi el plato Alpujarreño, el erizo de las castañas se abre rodandolo por el suelo con el pie.

I'm 55. And my tastes in alcohol have...broadened considerably. But I still prefer, above all, Andalusian Sherries. Pajarete is a particular favorite, but Agua de Valencia and Paxarette we miss a lot.
