Have you ever had a mainsail or foresail jammed out? If so where did it happen and what was the fix? 😀
@Simonck3 жыл бұрын
Furling main jammed in the Ionian, a rope as high as possible up the luff tied round the mast, outhaul released and luff/mast rope tightened. Didn't work perfectly but enough to get settled into an anchorage, wait for calm and effect repairs. The problem was of my own making, if I'd stopped hauling in the main when the tension on the inhaul was higher than normal the main wouldn't have got jammed

72 foot ketch in 40knots in Current basin , French pass NZ , Genoa furling line jumped of barrel & jammed , Night time blowing a Gail , Had half out , by myself , Just let go both sheets & went in tight circles under motor till it wrapped , Bit hairy at first but all ended well , Dropped the pick & HAD A BEER Ha

Try taking the load off the sail when furling - ease the main or point into the wind until it’s flapping and depowered. That will take the load off the blocks and lines and make the job much easier.

an idea, how about plain slab reefing?, aka just dump the halyard, if the foil won't turn, it's the surest way to pack up the sail.(you have to anyway, to unload the bearings, lines, etc. to re-reeve the rig to repair any jams).

Sadly that's how those brand of blocks commonly break like that. I prefer the thing to break and not lock up like that. The last boat we rented in Turkey the foresail roller furler jammed like that as well. !!

@markrodger2763 жыл бұрын
Seriously, you both did well in a stressful situation, been there. Furling mainsail systems work great 99% of the time as long as you treat them right. Halyard tension is critical, if too tight it will make it harder to furl / unfurl, boom should be 90 deg to mast and absolutely no bend in the mast. Never head directly into wind when furling this will cause the sail to crease and end in a jamb, if your system furls anti clockwise have a little wind to starboard this will help keep some tension in the sail and allow it to go into the slot smoothly, if clockwise be on port. I also make a point of going round all the blocks once a week, checking them giving them a clean with fresh water and then a spray with ptfe spray. Touch wood we have never had a problem in 6 years on this boat.
@SailingABSea3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, once the basic operational needs of a furling main are understood it should be trouble free.

In-mast furling is an abomination and safety hazard. -poor sail shape, no roach on the leech. -inability to douse or reef in the event of a jam, especially in heavy weather. If you absolutely *must* have mainsail furling, in-boom is the way to go.
