Always go to a German auto mechanic. They have lots of practice with repairs due to unreliable vehicles. I mean, a Japanese auto mechanic really only gets practice changing belts and fluids.😂 I love this series!!!

Had a friend of mine who was a master mechanic at lexus for 13 years he said he quit because it was almost always just doing brakes. It said it wore him out physically with constant tire changes etc. They had a campaign fixing maybe timing covers or something, he stepped down as a lead just to work by himself doing them all. Said they paid like 22 hours and he did them in like 13ish. Did that for 2 years to save money and start his own business.

The issue on the 3rd gen 4runner has probably already solved but for everyone else; you really do need to go with OEM/Denso wires and coil packs. I've ran into the same issue on my 00' 4runner and it turned out to be bad shielding on the 'premium' part's store plug wires...burned a hole through the insulator. However, I doubt this would be a coil pack issue as this is a waste-spark ignition system, with a single coil pack providing spark for two cylinders (paired 1-4, 3-6, and 5-2). When a coil pack goes on one of these trucks it usually shows up in two cylinders. You also need to run a dual-electrode sparkplugs...don't over complicate things and just get OEM/Denso/NGK and be done with it, no fancy plugs needed.

I agree 100 percent. Although since the valve cover gasket is blown there probably a really good chance some of the valves aren’t closing all the way do to soot build up.

Can confirm, I tried autolites on my 97 and it was horrible after two weeks, went completely back to denso everything, had to get the wire set from the dealership.

That gen 4Runner with the 3.4 has a waste spark ignition system, if the coil fails it misses on 2 cylinders not 1 which produces a violent misfire. If it has a noticeable but not violent misfire it is likely only missing on 1 cylinder as you said cyl 5 I believe. My experience has been on those motors if one cyl is misfiring start with injectors as they are a known common failure on the 3.4 anyway. Go to the salvage yard and pull the injectors from another 4Runner and keep spares to swap in, it will happen again if you keep it long enough.

Just went through this on my 2000 4Runner. It would run fine at first start up and then run rough if I turned it off and restarted it. It also showed a misfire on #6. Had to replace a coil pack, new sparkplugs, new wires, and a fuel injector on #6. Runs great now.

I had a 2010 TRD off road regular cab tundra. Kinda rare. It had 1600lbs payload. Started my landscaping business with it and snow removal too. Plenty fast and fun off road too. Sold it at 230K cause i needed an HD for my growing business. Great truck with just basic maintenance.

Just took our 2004 4runner V6 with 242k on the original powertrain 7 hours to the beach without issues. Gotta love the old Toyotas.

I love these series and I'm looking forward to Moab. That said, it would nice to see another episode of two of you guys doing an overnight camping trip. More offroading, comparing and general tomfoolery! It's cool seeing them on Fins & Things, but it just ends so quickly after a few weeks and episodes of build-up. I think others and myself would love to see more with these champs in action!

The problem is growth; they hit the point where outside of car shows and first ride events, they are trying to film 2 or 3 videos a day and that just doesn’t leave time for team overnight outings anymore.

Those spark plugs were iridiums and the tips basically look like that. After changing spark plugs in my 2000 T4R I just used basic OEM NGK plugs. From what I've read on forums, these 3.4 engines don't necessarily run better with the fancier and more expensive plugs. OEM Denso plugs would be fine also, and some even left the factory with NGK and Denso in the same engine.

Agree. That, and pull the injectors to clean them. I had this same exact issue and was chasing it from easiest (coil packs) to most involved (pulling and manually cleaning the injectors). Sure enough, the injector was the culprit. 99 Tacoma 3.4L 4WD MT runs smooth as silk. ❤

@vnegron3 I posted another comment on here about BG 44k. My injectors only have about 38k miles on them, but I still had a slight rough spot in the idle that had developed. It would come and go consistently every few seconds. No injector cleaner worked except for the BG product. I ran one can through a full tank and would romp on it ever now and then while driving. It got rid of the rough spot. I changed the oil immediately after. I'm now going to run a can through it once a year and use Redline SL-1 through to maintain it throughout the year. It sounds like Redline SL-1 is the next best thing next to BG 44K, and because of how it works is chemically different, you don't have to change the oil after its use.

my '01 4Runner had NGK on one side and Denso on the other. I bought it with about 120k miles so I assumed the first owner never changed them.

5:20 Hopefully they replaced those cracking brake lines before taking it wheeling. That seems pretty high on the priority list.

Autolite spark plugs are definitely bottom of the barrel, and there’s also a decent chance that cheap carquest coil was bad right out of the box

The cheap vehicle series on this channel is probably my favorite series u guys came up with. Weather it's Cheap Jeep, cheap Toyota, convertible truck, car etc. Every one is entertaining informative learning about some of the great cars or trucks you can buy at a pretty decent price as long as u take your time and and try your best to figure out what your buying and if it's worth the money. Hope you guys continue with this series with another idea when this one is over. Also if you're thinking about what u could do with the next cheap series i have an idea that a lot of people could relate to since they are so popular as a daily driver ad specially if u live in more of a winter climate. You should do a cheap cross over or small SUV challenge. the car's have to be close in size with only AWD. no low gear transfer case. Set the rules to something along the size of a Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Mazda CX5, GMC terrain or anything in that range. I'm in Atlantic Canada and every second car on the road is somewhere in that ball park. I think t would be a good series since winter is coming and a lot of people look for that style of car because there decently affordable and go decent in the snow and some light off roading. Just a thought but I think would turn out well, get lots of views and be fun to make. Sorry for the long rant in the comments but I'd like to see how it would turn out. Cheap?…. 8- 10 thousand dollar vehicles that if you brought to a Toyota Dealership they’d find 10 k in needed repairs! Toyota are good vehicles but c’mon!

@Cs…. The 4Runner was $6,500. Even with your assumption of $10k repair it will end up being $16,500 total cost. A new 2023 4Runner starts at $40k. A 4Runner completely sorted for 2.5 x less expensive is cheap. Especially, because you can spend the $10k repair over a year or longer if needed. You can buy the used car without loan and that alone is a giant advantage these days. It’s definitely easier to come up with $6.5k cash than with $40k cash. Cheap or not is relative.

It's pretty tough to hurt a 3.4 V-6 in these 4 runners. With a waste spark plug system you would usually get 2 misfires but that isn't the case here. I would use standard plugs because in stock systems unless it came with iridium plugs they can cause more problems than they are worth. If it isn't the injector I would be surprised. I have sold hundreds of Toyotas with the 3.4 in them and I have very rarely seen internal damage unless someone ran them hot and continued to run them hot. I have seen many surpassing 500k without any type of major work.

I was thinking the same thing! You always hear about how horrible the tundras are on fuel, but that's pretty good for a full-size truck. I'm thinking they probably reset it on the trip down there and it was mostly highway, but still not bad. Probably a couple MPG better than the 80 series got, haha.

When my 2010 Tundra got rear-ended my airbag light stayed on as well. It took the body shop about an hour of experimenting and they finally figured out that if you put the seats in the perfect upright position (don't ask me what position that is) and then try to clear the codes, the airbag light went off. I also have a 2000 4runner and I had a cylinder 3 misfire and it turned out to be a bad fuel injector.

Went through a misfire on my 99 4Runner. Actually chased it for many years. It started at 293k and I didn’t solve it until 336k. I changed plugs, wires, coil packs, injectors, and in the end it was a leaking head gasket. She’s solid now and ready for another 300k. Btw I believe these trucks run better on the dual ground plugs.

i own a 3rd gen and am very proud of it and the fact all he could do was nitpick an exhaust leak and valve cover gaskets makes me so happy lol he bought a car he could potentially drive for 20k miles without doing anyt of that other maintenance to it but changing the oil

The fact that they made a rule of more than 200k but then they had to cap the price at 10k says a lot. Toyotas are expensive for a reason

Not really, they're still overpriced. Sure they generally last IF they're maintained. But many rust away before mechanical issues finally get them. I've also owned GMs that held up just as well. Toyota is a great brand, don't get me wrong. But way overinflated for prices and parts.

You Toyota people are so deluded. 2/3 of those vehicles had some sort of problem that you would encounter in most similar vehicles with that mileage. Just like with any vehicle, if it’s maintained properly, it will last, like the Land Cruiser. But it still had issues, and people are still selling them for prices that would make it seem that they have been completely restored.

@@n0pe213 the funny thing is I have two GM’s and two Subarus but my family has a lot of Toyotas and one of my gm trucks is a 1 owner 2004 with 220k I bought it with 190. It’s needed brake lines, head gaskets wheel bearings, ball joints, and a rear differential. meanwhile my dad’s 2002 Highlander with 247K has only ball joints and some struts

My 1999 3.4 4Runner had sticker requiring dual electrode plugs. Also had #2 plug wire go bad had same symptoms. 205,000 miles on mine.

D indicator being out is super common given that’s the light that’s on the most, but also possibly because people just pull them out so as not to have a bright green light just on while your driving.

That catalytic converter is notorious for cat thieves. It's an easy access cat that only requires two reciprocating saw cuts. The mechanic that fixed it did a terrible welding job.

In the case of the 4runner not starting after replacing the battery: a lot of Toyotas, especially late 90s-late 00's always start and die a couple times after replacing or disconnecting the battery. The computers on these are finnicky and take a couple tries to reset itself to proper spec/mapping. Worker at a battery shop for years all the older Toyotas did this.

I mean at least what he changed were wear items so it's not like it was wasted money. But yeah most people don't really have the where with all to really diagnose an issue. No shade at Tommy in the slightest, he did what was most likely the issue.

I had this exact same vehicle. I'd put $20 that it was a bad injector. At 230k miles, I had to replace two of them. I had almost every issue that you had with this one at that mileage. Still loved it. You'll almost certainly want to do the Tundra brake upgrade on it as those front rotors are VASTLY undersized to the weight of the vehicle and the rear drums are iffy at best.

I got a ‘96 80 series with a 1hz in it. She’s pretty rusty cos I live on the beach, but she still starts first pop, and will take u where ya wanna go. She’s got over 650 000km

Either buy OEM or Denso/Aisin for most parts. The 7K for the 4Runner might be a steal. Valve cover gaskets and new brake lines won't cost much by the gasket is a several hour job. The shitty cat job but has clean brake fluid does not compute.

More than likely an injector on the 4 runner. Super common on the 3.4 and usually if it’s the coils two will go at a time not just one. Get Oem or as close to it though! You’ll just be replacing them again soon if you don’t.

Check for coolant loss and do a pressure test. You very well could have a blown head gasket on that 4Runner. While doing a pressure test on the cooling system, stick a bore scope down that cylinder and see if you have coolant weeping into the cylinder to cause that misfire. Head gasket failures were fairly common on 3rd gens.

Only replace the plugs when the engine is cold on the 3.4. Aluminum head, iron block.

I'm experiencing the EXACT same thing in my 98. New plugs, coils, wires and even fuel injectors and STILL getting the misfire. I'm eagerly waiting to see your next move.

I believe this issue is caused by a minor head gasket leak that fouls the plug by letting coolant in the cylinder when the vehicle is off.

@@palebeachbum Yeah, I had a gen 4 that had the same issue. Cylinder 6 seems to be the first to go. It was a real booger to diagnose because typically it would clear out after driving for a bit and sometimes wouldn’t give issue at all. The gasket would leak just enough during cooldown (I imagine because the heads and bottom end cooled at a slightly different rate and thus contracted) to allow a bit of pressurized coolant to foul that plug. Once you’d restart after a while it’d miss like crazy and again clear up. In the case of the 4Runner in the video, it also could be caused by an intake leak around cylinder 6 causing a lean misfire, or injector being blocked up and having a poor spray.

On the 4 runner with the bad coil pack, change those plugs when you change coil packs. And get OEM packs is you can.

Yup OEM is the only way to go for ignition parts, sensors, or any electrical parts really. Aftermarket parts these days are mostly Chinese made with practically no quality control and very high failure rates. To the point where the "new" part is junk right out of the box and worse then the part being replaced.

Really like this last bit we’re y’all going through some basic mechanic stuff. Never really see this anymore and it’s great to know. Tommy should have to diagnose more things. Maybe have the mechanic character (love him!) come behind him and give him pointers.

Roman, you mentioned the 80 series is one of your dream cars. I know it's TFL policy to move on cars after you have gotten the maximum content value out of them. However would love to know what FOREVER cars the team has that they own and would very unlikely part with and what in the fleet has been around the longest!!

Its an injector, I had the same misfire on my 99 v6 and the symptoms were the same. Misfire on hot starts, so I went ahead and rebuilt all 6.

I had a 4th Gen T4R just like yours that blew a head gasket at 251k. Hopefully, that’s not what yours has. Sold it as is for $3500 because Toyota.

When it comes to tracking down a misfire. You can try unplugging the low voltage side of each coil and listening for a difference in the engine running. The other thing that would be nice to do with this engine would be a compression test of all six cylinders. It's possible that your intermittent misfire is a valve issue

You can't on that older 3.4 because it has waste spark ignition, one coil does two opposing cylinders. So only three coils total on that engine.

The reason it shut off after you moved the coil is because you had the mass air flow disconnected

ALWAYS put OEM spark plugs and wires/coils on any vehicle. Had a similar issue on a Audi Q5. Store brand just didn't fix it and it ran worse.

Very cool that you(Tommy)are taking the initiative to get the 4R running correctly with what are simple solutions that don't cost an arm and a leg to do oneself. Not everyone would even do that much. I used to trouble shoot and work on things like that all the time. Something that young people of both genders should be capable of doing IMO.

Autolite plugs are not great in a Toyota. You want a NGK or Denso, it actually makes a difference. Also it can be a bad ground wire issue on the plug going to the coil pack. I had this happen on my Tundra.

Maybe try running some BG 44K through the the engine with one tank of gas in the 4Runner, and then change the oil. It's super strong stuff and pricey, but it actually works.

Unplugged the coils and crank it over. You will hear the compression issue when cranking, the speed changes.

You installed the wrong spark plugs on the 4runner, it takes the dubble ground ngk or denso plugs.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed they put the wrong plugs in! There’s a sticker on the right side of the upper radiator hose warning to use the double ground plugs. 🤦‍♂️

The 3.4 takes double prong plugs. Says right on the engine cover.

I can't wait until I get my 96 T4R 5 speed 4x4 back from the shop. I plowed a deer with it. Despite both the AC condensor and the radiator taking a hit and getting a bit squashed, both systems continued functioning perfectly. I miss it so much every shop here is slammed with deer damaged vehicles and it's been there over 2 months 😭

Just having a 3rd gen 4runner with a leather steering wheel in perfect shape is rare and a flex. They always have torn leather wheels.

I have a feeling the head gasket is on its way out in the 4Runner. Remember when y'all spent $3,500 fixing the engine in that clean ' 90s Tacoma you had a while back? I'm seeing a trend here.

Lol. I chased the same thing on a 2000 4runner. It was the injector the whole time. They are horrible to work on. But as it turns out, if you put enough time and money into most cars they will reach high mileages.

I’m gonna say since light isn’t flashing it’s possibly a fuel injector at fault. Based on what I know a flashing engine light denotes a catalytic converter damaging miss fire aka dumping raw gas into the converter due to faulty ignition or low compression

@18:30 pretty sure that "worn" plug is actually an Iridium or platinum and your other one is a regular copper plug. You should have bought Denso or NGK plugs, not sure if you did/didn't.

First mistake was not buying oem parts for the 4Runner. Second mistake was not listening to the mechanic when he said the valve cover gasket is blown. This is why you have a misfire, one of the valves is probably either sticking open or not closing all the way.

Your misfire is probably worn out O-rings on your injectors. I had a similar misfire that always popped up once the engine reached operating temp. Two mechanics could not resolve the issue. Finally I found a video of another owner having injector issues. I pulled my Mis-firing injector and found the seals were crumbling. Replaced with the seals from my parts vehicle and it was fixed and has been for 4 years.

Video said they swapped packs around to see if the misfire moved...but yes, no video shown of work on #6 at all. Maybe they swapped 6 and 3?

They share could between two holes. There is only 3 coils on the motor.

@@NukePooch1 It does look odd working on the 3 bank when the misfire was on 6, one good thing about it is it did make a difference when they changed the coil packs temporarily so the issue is something they had their hands on (bad wire, loose connection, corrosion on the 6 wire plug-in). Just a thought.
