Anemia can be so frustrating! I struggled with it for years because of heavy menstrual cycles. If it helps: Hemoglobin is the amount of protein that carries oxygen to your blood (decrease means fatigue with anemia) Hematocrit is the amount of red blood cells in your blood Ferritin refers to the amount of iron your have in storage. Hope you feel better soon!

I don’t know if you have been told this but when I was pregnant I was anemic and I entered to a dietician that specializes in anemia and they told me that dairy inhibits the absorption of iron. So I had to space my iron filled foods and the iron supplement well apart from any dairy foods and it made a huge impact on my iron levels for the better. Hope this helps you too

Considering his sisters are both Neurodivergent, it makes sense that he is too! I think that’s why this family brings me so much joy! It’s so lovely to see a neurodivergent family thriving and encouraging each other’s differences and needs without the allistic mindset of needing to “fix” behavior or change to adhere to a certain mold beyond the obvious level of kindness and respect we all should aspire to. It’s just beautiful to see, heals my inner neurodiverse child! ❤

Iron: #1 advice is ask for and prioritize an iron infusion. It’s an iv a week for 2-3 weeks and so worth it. #2 spinach smoothies #3 I’m southern so I go for pinto beans in the instant pot with some type of ham added with a side of coleslaw. Could be done with veggie broth instead of the ham if you like the taste of beans.

For iron, the best is baby cereal. Often, for 1/3 of a cup, you will have 90-100% of your daily value. You can put it in yogurt, this is what I do. Or do muffins or pancakes too. Hope you will get better soon ❤

Jessica, I have struggled with iron as well and one thing they said was the tannins in coffee and tea can inhibit iron absorbing. So even when I was eating iron rich foods I would still have lower iron and they said if I was drinking coffee or tea with it it could cause it to not absorb as well. Same with milk which I also would drink with meals. Just my experience but I know you love your tea

Hello, I‘m from Germany and love these Exit Advent-calender ! I do one every year and it‘s always so much fun to do it and solve the riddles ! As a little help for Bailey, there are arrows when you solve the riddles on the back of the red, yellow an blue strings. From the door on this day you can follow the arrows and you find the next door. To Check if you got it correct, there are the three signs (Star, Moon, etc) From the strings. If they are the same, you were right :) have fun With it - I love them :)

I've had anemia my whole life because my periods are heavy as hell. I was always on iron pills and my iron levels never really went up enough, then I was recommended by a doctor to get an iron infusion, and that was literally the only time my iron levels just SKY rocketed and I finally started feeling good! It's been 8 months since then and my levels are still great. Do it, Jessica! took me 2 sessions, 30 mins each.

I laughed so hard when Chris pulled the play-doh from the floor. I totally thought that one little person left a wet sticky sock on the floor. I don’t have kids but I have cats who like to launder various fabric items in their water bowl and the hide them. I’ve found kitty toys behind the furniture as well as the one time I almost died reaching behind the couch to grab a stray sock and it was sopping wet. I then slid down between the couch and wall 🤣 but I’m not little and it hurt 🤣

Hi Jessica, if your iron levels are low and food is not boosting it, I recommend getting iron infusions. I get them once every 6 months to a year and they have helped dramatically raise my levels. And I also suffer from migraines but have been put on the Emgality shot which is a monthly dose, and I will say since starting it over two years ago, I have yet to have a migraine. It’s been a life saver! Hope this helps, feel better!

When I had really low iron. Female stuff, a doctor in the er, told me to buy an iron fish. I believe you can only buy it on the internet. You put in the pan when you cook liquid. Like boiling water for your tea. It will put iron in the water. That helped her. When you buy one, they donate one to a country where they do not get the food they need for nutrition. I had a very difficult time absorbing iron, too. I hope you feel better soon.

Not sure if you’ve heard of “the lucky iron fish” i believe it is called. It is quite literally a block of iron in the shape of a fish that you cook with to help fortify meals with iron! For example, boiling it in with pasta to enrich it with iron. It it used in developing countries i think to help treat iron deficiencies. Its worth looking into!

I’ve had brain cancer twice. While doing chemo my labs would be in the toilet. I had to take liquid iron instead of a pill. I also had several iron infusions. I ate a lot of northern beans. I would just throw them in the crockpot. I slept a lot and it was nice to have dinner ready when I woke up. Also if you didn’t know barometric pressure changes can give you a headache. We call it barometer head. I live in west Texas and I’ve learned a good barometric pressure for me 29.97. If it goes much higher or lower than that then I’m in misery. Or if it’s high or low and climbs either up or down quickly then I’m in misery. I take 100 mg of sumatriptan and if it doesn’t work after 2 hours then I take another 100 mg tablet.

Hi Jess, i’ve been struggling with chronic iron deficiency for over 25 years. What i found out helped me was that there are different types of iron suppletion. There ferrofumarate, the most common supplement, but also ferrosulfate, which spreads the dose over a longer period, and there is also ferroglucanate which is often put in supplemental drinks. For me a combo of the ferrosulfate and glucanate work best because my iron levels go very fast up and down with ferrofumarate. Hopefully this helps!

I’ve been going through basically the same anemia thing! Found out in August that I’m severely anemic! All the tests came back super low. It takes 3+ months for iron numbers to really show improvement. Also, avoid grapes! They deplete iron stores. Don’t take or eat calcium near taking your iron. Certain types of fish also can deplete iron stores. I had to do a lot of research when I found out. My numbers also have only slightly improved as of November, I’m getting rechecked in March. It’s quite a long process to get back to a normal range. I hope you’re able to start feeling better soon!

Thanks for sharing about your Anemia, Jessica. I'm vegan and am also anemic. But I've always struggled with anemia, even when I was an omnivore. One food that surprised me about the iron count is cream of wheat! The only problem is, caffeine inhibits iron absorption and I normally eat it at breakfast when I like to have coffee. But it's an incredibly easy and fast meal and you can add extra ingredients to make it tastier like fruit, or cheese and butter for a more savory option. I also try to throw spinach into any dish I make and keep tangerines or 'lil cuties on hand to eat along with my meals for that vitamin c. Lentils also work well in marinara sauce for pasta and can also be made into a tasty lentil loaf that isn't much more difficult than making a normal meat loaf. I also add lentils to salad and a lot of different soups.

I hope you and Jacob feel better with you Migraines soon Jessica. I have gotten regular Migraines since I fractured the front part of my skull and I get really bad Migraines dues to congestion because I had a CATSCAN done and it turns out I have extra deep Groove sinus pockets which dues to +4 to grass and ragweed along with a bunch of spring +3s mimics my Migraines especially when the extra fluid drains into my spinal canal. Blech! I also never met someone as anemic as I am. Like I just had to take blood work for surgery and the numbers LOOKED HORRIBLE and my primary was like "Hey your numbers have actually come up since the last time. Good job." Meanwhile they read way off the chart anemic and I always have to reassure the nurses that draw the blood that I do in fact clot and no I am NOT actually on blood thinners. And then double reassure the surgeons that I 100% clot with no issues despite what the numbers say so don't actually worry. I guess some of us were just built differently to confuse everyone because if everyone was identical what fun would that be? Easier, YES, but not as much fun.

Iron rich cereal really helped me in the past. An certain nuts are great for iron as well. I know you are really good at planning so try meal prep at least 2meals a day that are rich in iron. Hope you feel better soon ❤🎉

So much advice about having low iron, I hope something helps. My only advice would be cut out dairy for a week, see if your absorption improves. Love to all ❤

A thought for Jessica... A supplement that helps the body absorb iron is spirulina. I took it when I was pregnant and needed to up my iron levels. Spirulina does not contain iron, it works alongside it to help your body with the absorption of iron. Wishing you all the best with this.

Do you cook with cast iron (non enameled)? Because that can definitely boost your iron levels as you get more iron in your food that way.
