Not only does it decrease comfort and living space but it significantly increases safety risks due to the flying hull and seperate disconnected cabins. @seandelaney1700 3 жыл бұрын
@@testicool013 The windward hull is in the air "flying" out of the water. Flying a catamaran hull is dangerous because if it flies too high you capsize. Flying a trimaran hull is how most are designed so I do not see why this would increase danger. Your more likely to lose your rig than capsize.

I have read the comments of many of your followers and I must say that I agree completely with their caution about safety and comfort. Your previous boat was no dog by any means but if you want to up the performance a bit and still keep the safety and comfort standard I am sure there is a perfect 60 footer out there that would suit all aspects of your sailing requirements. As far as a black interior goes?? all the light would be just sucked up. Please reconsider questions like where will any visitors sleep and room for two active kids? I would hate you to make a decision that you might be sorry for in the future. Love your story and videos

This is a good time to insert the 1st time you got the outremer up to 22.5 knots and Riley was jumping with excitement while Elayna was crying her eyes out, begging to sail slower - “We’re too fast, please slow it down” - amazing how time changes things.

@MichaelBuck
@MichaelBuck 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrKjelsvik Agree completely. This is their choice and they have done the research and for them, this is what they want to do, sail fast, maybe even RACE a little as well. But in no way does any competent sailor ever have to outrun a storm these days. With today's technology and data available just about anyone can learn to read the weather models and with good judgment make the right decision to avoid bad weather and wait it out in a protected port of call. FYI: I sailed fast as a youngster, enjoyed it immensely, but with a family of 4 and 2 very young children, that is not a consideration and doesn't fit into my way of thinking. I am open to learning and seeing how this will all pan out for them, but in all honesty, I give it 1-2 years before Elana says enough is enough, especially if a third child accidentally appears on the scenes.

Hey guys! I've been following your journey for years, I've been your patron for a while although we don't know each other personally I feel connected to you. I have experienced some harsh times and I always escaped to watch your videos that helped me a lot. I just feel I have to write my thoughts. I hope you don't take it personally. First of all it's a huge think to make such a monumental decision to make the switch to a new boat again, congratulations for that. I haven't seen your videos for a while I thought I catch up with you. I was so excited to see the thumbnail of the new boat, I thought it's a 50-60 ft catamaran. Then when I watched I had a bittersweet feeling, I was happy for the new boat but the more I watched I got a bit confused. I sailed 32-52 ft long monohulls, I only have a few thousand nautical miles experience, insignificant compared to you. I just feel that this trimaran wouldn't satisfy your requirements. You said you plan to sail the next 10 years in the Pacific islands, at some point Lenny would need his own little cabin wouldn't he? He is growing up so fast. You clearly need some help onboard like you had so many times, would 1-2 additional crew member had enough space in that catamaran? You're doing a lot of work, you have a lot of gear I would have imagined that you could use one cabin in a 50ft catamaran just for that. It appears to me that this 60ft trimaran has less useable space than a 42ft long monohull.i really don't see how 6 persons could comfortably sleep in it. Someone in the comments section already pointed out that being in a closed boat space has its challenges, it was a challenge on La Vaga II I sense there is even less personal and communal spaces. Regarding maneuverability isn't it easier to handle a catamaran with one engine in both hulls? I didn't see motors in the side hulls of the trimaran. One thing is that Riley need to single handedly handle the boat which is very true, but in worst case scenario Elayna would have to handle the boat, would she be able to do it? The only advantage of this boat has in my opinion is speed. But I would assume you want to live and enjoy a family life as safely and comfortably as possible rater than racing. The cat had a much better protected mesh area with proper railings on the outside where the kids can play, I don't see this on the trimaran. That's it in a nutshell I'm very interested to hear your and my fellow followers opinions on this. I just want to close on a positive note, I hope you don't take this personally, what you achieved is simply stunning, I'm very proud of you, I hope one day we can meet in person. 💙👨‍👩‍👧‍👦⚓⛵🐳🐬🌴 Best wishes Gabor

One thought on your choice of bare carbon on the interior of the bedroom. Its a personal choice, and definitely looks cool, but I will point out that it will come at a cost. All of that black will absorb light, so if you had N lumens of light planned in a standard design with white paint, you will likely need double or more. More power, more lights, more wire, more complexity, and it will me much more harsh. This is a problem we have in data centers because some people decided a long time ago to paint all of the server cabinets black, and the servers were gray ...a combination that just sucked up light. If you put a white cabinet in a room like that, you can usually work in it with just the room standby/emergency lighting as well, if not better than in the black cabinet with all of the room lights on. Just thought I would point out that issue with bare carbon..

Sailing versus living. Riley is a sailor. He wants a boat that he can sail alone. A larger 50 to 60 ft catamaran usually requires more people to sail it and is just not as much fun to sail. That does not seem to be what Riley wants. He wants to sail and have fun sailing. Anything less and maybe he doesn't want to do it anymore and just move to dry land. We love the destination and the onboard life. Riley loves the journey. Looks to me he is trying his damndest to accommodate both. Hats off to him... and Alayna too for understanding this. I used to race 16’ Hobies with my brother, all fresh water. My brother handled the rudder & mainsail I worked the jib and was on the trapeze. No matter what anybody says, fast sailboats are a kick! The only thing that makes me worry is if you can “fly a hull” that means wind can get under the boat and the possibility of flipping increases. I’m sure this was considered in the design but basic physics says you can’t eliminate it as an increased risk.
@georgiogorge
@georgiogorge 3 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong about the Hobies, once the windward hull is out of the water you're very close to capsizing. But there are several factors making this not a simple comparison to a trimaran. Firstly, you're only seeing the windward ama lifting while the main hull is primarily still supported by displacement; once the main hull is lifted then flipping becomes likely. Secondly the leeward ama is the pivot point, which leaves you with all of the weight in the main hull and the windward ama to lift up (to the point of inevitable capsize), which is very close to 100% of the boat's weight. With a catamaran you don't have to lift the leeward hull, leaving what I'd guess to be 75% on a Hobie cat assuming the crew weighs the same as the boat. And thirdly the sail area (power) to weight (75%) ratio of a Hobie 16 is about 9x as high as that of a Rapido 60; but since I don't know how to actually calculate the forces involved I think it'd be best to just say I think the Hobie has significantly more lifting power for the weight it needs to lift to risk capsize.
@fakenamefakename12345
@fakenamefakename12345 3 жыл бұрын
@@georgiogorge What your talking about with "lifting power" is actually called righting moment. Once you have something that wants to pivot, a "moment" is created. Your like 99% there with your explanation. The righting moment on a trimaran is much much larger than on a monohull or a cat. This is why they are so fast. You can stay flatter with more sail area due to the extra hull. The catamaran yes has a higher power to weight ratio im guessing but it also has less righting moment and less mass which will allow the boat to pivot faster(accelerations are amplified).

Fast Trimarans equate to more speed. But high speed come with a price, not to mention the extra risk. Fast Trimarans equates to 3 hulls and a high mast. Both come up with more work, more worries, more cost... but at the same time this 60' offers way less space compared to a 44' catamaran. Everyone has ideas about how much space is needed to live aboard... but here, well, ...unless financially it makes sense ?? Just tell us how much you got it for...

Most these comments are saying you bought the wrong boat, but I get it. Riley wants to keep sailing and Elaina wants to plant roots, but yall need the KZbin channel to thrive to survive. So you get some speedy boat to haul ass from port to port and stay in houses while on the hook. Besides, half the stuff on this channel has you guys on land or at port.This boat wasn't meant as a full time live aboard but a mode of travel from spot to spot while keeping appearance of being salty for the channel.

When I was looking at a trimaran (went with leopard 42) the lack of space was an issue inside and out. You lose the front area and a functioning trampoline area. We were considering the Neel 47 but with 2 big dogs decided to pass on the thrill of high speed sailing for the comfort and more use ability. Also the extra wide beam would have prevented us docking in many areas we will be sailing. Will you use safety netting around part of the Tri? That said and if sea sickness will not be an issue your boat is like the new sonic jets that will travel across the world in record time. It’s a beautiful looking boat and you guys know what is best for you much better than your fans. Congratulations and best of luck with the build out.

Fantastic boat fore sure, Riley will have a blast sailing that and we'll have a blast watching. But let's face it they are not upgrading from 2 hulls to 3, they are downgrading to a single hull (with floaters). And that's when our interest as viewers and their own interest as a family can collide :( They are removing 1 full bedroom when their family grows and they will need even more outside help than before. As it is they almost always had someone else onboard, where will that extra hand sleep from now on? To me it signals that Riley and Elayna might not be living full time on the boat anymore, especially if they sail in Asia and Oceania close to their home country, they will have more opportunity to fly in and out, go on the water to have fun and shoot some content, then back to land, etc. That's fine, so long as they are happy and keep their great channel alive!

Just so you know, I was screaming at the video whole time wondering which boat you were getting! (Rapido have two brand new boats with folding amas, a 40 and a 50. I guess you're still not sure, but thinking of the 50 or the non-folding 60. I sympathize. The trade-offs there are horribly well-balanced). Asia is going to be a different place for you guys, and for sure I would research mold. You're going to get caught in the rain. A lot of it. For a long time. And you may be cleaning everything on the inside of the boat, and having to replace a lot of stuff as you won't have dry weather windows to air stuff out. So factor that into your plans. A black interior is going to be ridiculously hot (especially at night) unless you are air-conditioned. I fell in love with the Corsair 37 the minute I got to walk around on one, and these are close to an ultimate evolution of that boat. My ultimate safety piece of equipment would be a rolling boom furler, but I don't know the numbers on weight and cost penalty. Single-handing and worrying about squalls though, having a completely simple instant reef on a high-performance main would be invaluable, especially for peace of mind. For god sakes don't get a mast furler. Low performance main plus high risk of jamming, not being able to furl, ...to hell with that noise. I think even on the 60, you would end up overloaded. So might as well get the 50 with the cost benefits. And there would be a lot of them. Just my two cents.

Hey guys, So pleased for you. I can’t help feeling a bit smug though as we have just bought a Tri! We have followed your channel for years and have sun faded old design ‘bildgey’ hoodies. You have been our drive and inspiration for progressing our boat life: not to say, ‘we have a posh boat’ but we have a boat that will enable us to enjoy this awesome planet to the best of our ability with the funds available to us (with a large loan of course). We enjoyed and found interesting your step up to a cat but always knew that cats mean big mooring costs. Doing a normal working week meant that this wasn’t an option to us but seeing the benefits of making it to the next port in good time, added comfort, safety margin and of course fun to our sailing was very appealing so we started to look at other options. We live in the Uk so drying ports are always 15nm or more apart which combined with the larger tides and monohull speeds made for sometimes challenging passage plans. We are now the proud owners of a Farrier F31 which I suppose is the great granddaddy of your Rapido. It folds and is trailerable and allows us to switch the costs off if anything in our lives goes bad as everyone knows boats cost loads as soon as you get them wet! Thanks again for being our inspiration but thanks more for letting me win a bet with the girlfriend that you had bought a trimaran! Couldn’t be more excited for you. Fair winds and hopefully meet you on the water one day. Jamie n Kara.

All the videos and analysis on this craft so far have focused on racing and performance, over long term livability. It’s designed for adult performance sailing requirements, rather than family cruising. It will be interesting to see if this is ideal for a family with two tots on board.

It will be an exciting yacht to sail, but that’s about the only benefit I can see, tell me if I’m wrong. There’s to many downsides, amount of room for 60’, manoeuvrability, beam, helm position, but I’ll keep an open mind and watch with interest. Love the idea of elec propulsion but that would’ve been easier on a 55 cat as to solar capacity. Anyway always love your channel.
