In this episode, Michelle and Alex explore their new home of Dordrecht (or "Dordt" as the locals call it). In this Dordrecht vlog, they look for the ingredients to make spicy guacamole at their local market, try the famous local hazelnut cake, and see all of the beautiful sights Dordrecht has to offer. Oh, and hopefully figure out if they're going to be really happy living there.

Born and raised in Dordt here! Did not know you would move to our great city! Dordrecht is also historically significant: during the Spanish occupation, the city held a (secret) meeting in Dordrecht, called the Eerste Vrije Statenvergadering (first free state meeting). It was here, 1572, that the leaders of the then 7 provences declared their independence from Spain. This led to the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, published in 1581. (Literal translation Declaration of Leaving). Large parts of this document were later, in 1776, copied into the American Declaration of Independence. So, not only was the modern Netherlands founded here, also the founding of the USA has some DORDRECHT history in its DNA!

Of you want to see the hall where this meeting was held: it is open to the public, look for het Augustijnenklooster (monastery) in Het Hof. There you will find the Statenzaal (State Hall).

Our city has so much more history to it. The Synod of Dordt which lead to the first Dutch translation of the Bible It used to be the place where the Dutch money used to be made at The Min (De Munt). It was the birthplace or residency of prominent historical sailors and painters. But those are just the historical tings. In todays word, the city doesn't feel over crowded like Amsterdam, The Hague, or Rotterdam. The vibe is 98% prositive, ofcourse there's some shit-starters anywhere you go. The city center has most of the major chains represented but also a thriving small business economy. It doesn't feel overly touristy even though there are plenty of tourists anually. Despite technically being an island, it's easy to get in and out of the city by any mode of transportation, except aviation. Also DUE to it technically being an island, the weather can be confusing. It has somewhat of an in-land island climate. Where the rivers are capable of holding back clouds but also trapping them. Meaning that it can be sunny in Dordrecht while it's overcast or rainy just on the other side of the island. But the inverse also happens quite frequently. Even though this is considered to be a myth, but ask any person from Dordrecht and they will confirm that this happens all the time. On many cloudy days around the city, if you look up, you can clearly see where the rivers run. Maybe it's just confirmation bias, but I've seen it thousands of times. Overall, as a 100% completely biased (born and raised) person. Dordrecht is trully one of the best, if not THE BEST city in the Netherlands.

Impressive. I lived thirty years of my life in Dordrecht (from when I was born there), so this has been a most welcome impression. I saw the house, near the big church, where my mother was born (Houttuinen 31) and where my grandfather owned a shipyard. He was a 'scheepstimmerman' and build and repaired wooden ships (tjalken) like I saw in one of the scenes. It really triggered emotional memories. As a boy I played on his wharf with the wooden leftovers, together with my 2 year older sister, every saturday. I also remember the 'hazelnootschuimgebak' van Brokking. A treat on every one of my birthday 's when still teaching at Da Vinci College in Dordrecht. The narrow street you showed is 'het Zakkendragersstraatje' and you are right: in earlier centuries workman carried big sacks from and to the ships using this street. You visited Dordrecht on a most perfect day. Thank you for this episode.

Fun fact: Dordrecht is the oldest city of Holland! (not to be confused with The Netherlands 😉) In the Middle Ages, a town could be granted city rights, which would make it a city (regardless of its size) and Dordrecht obtained city rights around 1195AD.

Love your videos. One small item: Porchetta is pronounced with a hard "k" - in Italian, an "e" or an "i" following a "c" makes it a soft sound, OR it has to have the "h" inserted to make it hard. Think "chianti" vs "cello." Anyway, enjoying your content, and excited by your recent move.

Thank you for taking us on a tour of your new home town. So many Dutch towns look so cute and quaint. On a side note: about the hazelnut cake being very sweet, in my experiences visiting the Netherlands it always struck me how UNsweet Dutch pastries were. The always seemed very flavourful and delicious but you would never mistake them for American Hostess Twinkies style overly sweet pasties. Surprising to me that the hazelnut cake was.

Hope you have a great time living in Dordrecht. I lived in Oud-Krispijn for a couple of years. Nice city to live. There is a famous saying about Dordrecht that contradicts this though; ' Hoe dichter bij Dordt, Hoe rotter het wordt'. Which basically means: The closer you get to Dordrecht, the shittier it gets. But that is for you to find out I guess. The Education museum and Dordrechts Museum are both worth a visit. Tip for Alex: Natural Park the Biesbosch is almost on your doorstep if you are ever in need of spotting a beaver...This is the place for you. Have fun!

So you moved from Rotterdam (where I live) to Dordrecht (where I lived twice during the 90's). Have a great life there! My former house is on the Voorstraat, what claims to be the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. Our house was right under the monumental ancient landmark church. Can you imagine the first nights, when it bangs it church bells twelve times!? Eventually one gets used to it, but it was quite exceptional to have that huge alarm clock, bigger than the house we lived in. Dordrecht is quite nice. The inhabitants tend to be different to people from Rotterdam, nicknamed „sheep heads" since at times they can be pretty aloof. Dordrecht is close to Rotterdam but also the Belgian city Amsterdam. The train tracks connect Amsterdam to Brussels, the most busiest track of the Netherlands, the reason why the train tunnel in Rotterdam was built in the 90's. Seeing your video brings back memories....

Congrats with your new home Michelle & Alex, lets us know when you both start a housewarming party (just kidding) 😉 Dordrecht is a nice city... used to go there in my younger days for drinking beers and listen to good music in Het Dolhuys and De Tol. The building Het Dolhuys was a first an monastery and later on an insane asylum in the Middle Ages (around the year 1500) Later on the years 1960's/ 1970's it went into a discotheek/bar. There is or was in Dordrecht also a very good Mexican restaurant on the Houttuinen, near by the Dom, named Pablos Cantina. I have no idea or its still there but if it is give it a try its very good and they serve authentic Mexican food. 👍Looking forward for the next video of you both, keep up the good work ! Take care ❤

the mural wasn't a goat but a sheep , it's a reference to the nickname of people from Dordrecht , called Sheepsheads. there are several variaties to the story but this is the one in the archives. in the old days Dordrecht had a very heavy tax system for goods coming in to the city and people tied to evade it as much as they could. at one time some people bought a sheep and wanted to take it into the city without paying tax. they dressed up the sheep like a little boy and , walking on it's hind legs , dried to smuggle it into the city. the guards at the city gates had a dog with then that wasn't fooled by the disguise and the smugglers where caught. that was the basis of the nickname of the inhabitants of our great city.

My mother's family was from Dordrecht so we visited the city very often when I was a kid. Her family lived in a beautiful, very big, 1850's era house and because my grandparents hadn't moved after their kids moved out, I also have some fond memories of this mysterious place. Most vivid are the memories of the big attic with a swing set hanging from the beams and a shitload of old machinery and electronics. My grandpa died when I was 8 and my grandmother sold the house to live in an elderly home. Still in Dordrecht though, so we kept visiting the city for quite a few more years.

"stadslandbouwkas de oude Beer", is a nice place in Dordrecht, where you can get various hot peppers, when they're ripe enough, because it's a greenhouse kept by nonprofit volunteers. Rijksstraatweg 108 , Woensdag van 9.00 -11.00 en zaterdags van 9.00-11.00 uur ... also, rent a boat or canoe & get into the Dutch Jungle,(Biesbosch) a swamp/marsh/mangrove with spooky mysterious trees....

Enjoy your stay in beautiful Dordrecht! I am usually not so patriotic (like many Americans 😜), but I think Dutch cities are generally the most charming and gorgeous in the world. If it is Amersfoort, Utrecht, Zutphen, Leiden, Delft, 's-Hertogenbosch (where I live), etc. etc. no matter where you find your home, the stay will be wonderful.

Roads and house are small because real estate was really expensive at the time these houses were build. Everybody wanted a house in the inner city.

9:16 This is what we call an Steeg (alley) a road that is not intended for cars or bicycles, sometimes it is also called a Brandgang as an emergency exit in the event of a fire but also as a drain during heavy rainfall to drain the backyards.

Brandgangen were created to prevent fires from extending to the whole city.

Another nice place to visit is the Mercurius observatory. Come on a sunny day to look at the sun through our telescope. And when you are there also visit the visitor center De Biesbosch.

Just wondering what made you choose Dordrecht specifically? We're currently living in another part of Europe but are considering moving to the NL later this year/early next and are trying to decide which city would suit our needs best. We've got two dogs, would like to not own a car (so somewhere very walkable like the city we're living in now) and need at least 2 bedrooms. Is that easier to find in Dordrecht vs Rotterdam/The Hague?

there’s a housing shortage right now, so keep an open mind, especially if you have pets. if you need to work in a certain city (like rotterdam), look at the cities that have regular train service there within a reasonable amount of time! edit- but in our case we uncovered an ideal spot for us that we knew nothing about! so i just explore a lot!

multiple kaashandel? Kaashandel is cheese trade but also cheese shop/stall, so I guess it would boil down to meerdere kaashandels. Dordrecht is especially well-known for the Statenbijbel, the first translation of the bible into Dutch, ratified by the (protestant) synode. Had an immense influence on the Dutch language.
