Hope you realise people like yourself have brought so much joy to us too, as we all love Chinese food in the UK and I know my Nepali Gurkha friends who have been all over the world love it too. Its because of this amazing food that at the age of 49 I have never been out of the UK so had a few weeks in Nepal. It was amazing and its all because of Asian food I ended up there and can now speak some Nepali. Tomorrow I am going to a Nepali party in the UK in London, i'm not worried that its not my community and that they do not know me I know enough Nepali to get on and they will be happy I can speak some. I did for many years wanted to learn to speak Chinese but so many types and also no opportunity to spend time with them only speak that language. We don't realise it but people from that area of the world brought us some great things, things we would miss if they were not here.

Randy, I discovered Made With Lau after my dad, also a Cantonese restaurant chef like yours, passed away at age 90 just as COVID hit, and Mom came to live with me and my husband. I suddenly had to learn how to prepare Cantonese meals for her, which I had never done in my life. I happened upon your channel and couldn't believe how similar your dad's cooking was to my dad's. Many of the dishes you make are the same ones I grew up eating (my folks are from Guangdong, too). Your videos and instruction have been invaluable as I've learned to become a good Cantonese cook. Your dad is a treasure, and he reminds me so much of mine. I can see that you are a good son and how much love there is in your family. It's heartwarming. So proud of all you've accomplished. Congratulations to you and your family!

I play Chinese flutes for a US food bank that has a Chinese clientele. When my songs were getting old and tired I asked "Old Man Lau" (how he signed his name) for song suggestions. He made two recommendations and I play both songs several times each week. I asked him because he is a Chinese flute player and he is accessible. It was the first letter I'd ever tried to write in Chinese and I was very proud of his kind response. Seeing your father recognized at the White House is very satisfying to me.

The only difference is, we don't have the same amount of melanin in our skin. I am of Asian descent but that doesn't make me any more akin to this family. We both felt the love from this strong family bond. If the roles were reversed and the family was black, I would still feel strong emotions and even cry like Randy did while watching this on a computer screen. We all made an invisible connection that is spiritual, it has nothing to do with skin color. The Beatles sang it best, "Can't Buy Me Love." Much respect and love.

At the end of the seventies my dad emigrated from HK to Germany and took my mother with him. He opened his own restaurant where he was a chef. In the meantime my mother gave birth to me. My dad was always very busy. One day he started complaining about pain in the chest. Two weeks later he passed from lung cancer. I was 5 years old back then, but still miss him today, almost 40 years later. Daddy Lau has become the gateway to my own dad. When I cook along to your videos, listening to the Cantonese instructions and imagine my dad laughing at me because I'm so ridiculously proud about creating wok-hei on the camping burner, I feel closer to him. Never lose that strong bond your family has. I'm looking forward to the cookbook. Seeing your parents so proud and parading those medals around reminded me so much of my maternal grandmother. She was a community leader in downtown Chinatown Toronto with helping to set up Chinese centric programs at the local community center and even helped build a local flower garden park just up the street from her home. Half of Chinatown knew her, and by extension, us. One of her accolades was a community leadership award given by our then govoner general of Canada. She had the award certificate, and the photo of her receiving it all framed up and hung center stage at home. I found your channel during lockdown, looking up references to recapture that same grandmother's recipes. Not much of what she knew was passed down to my mother or my uncles. With so much time on my hands, I took it upon myself to relearn some of those unwritten and forgotten recipes. Even in other Facebook groups I joined for additional resources, those members would recommend this channel 7/10 times. Your reach is incalculable. Live it up. This is your moment.

Thank you for this. We are in Honolulu, and you helped me understand my Aunt's Cantonese husband better. For him, the achievement is not his alone, and it's not about the money. It's about bringing pride and blessings to the community. He is 95 years young!

Thank you, Randy, for crafting your show with all your translations and explanations. You make our Chinese culture accessible and worthy of the respect it deserves. I have served my family many of your recipes. Even though my family ate Northern Chinese food when I was growing up, my mother-in-law was from Toishan and cooked delicious food. Sadly, no one in my husband's family learned to cook from their mom, and her craft was lost. I am so glad you preserve an art that has been passed on for thousands of years. You and your family deserve the accolades you received for your hard work. I cried when I saw your video because you brought us along on your journey. Bravo!

I just want to say that ever since I followed your channel, I tried a lot of the recipes and it helped bring me and my dad together. He told me that food literally brings people together. Somehow watching your videos helped to make me realize what love for our parents can look like. I always had a very strained relationship with my dad. But now I know. just making a heart warming meal with the familiar old Cantonese taste is all it takes to bring the family closer. I'm also now more interested in my Cantonese heritage and will bring my Dad to Kwong Chow for a holiday next year. Thank you Made with Lau!

You got me so emotional too! So so so happy for you and your family. I’ve watched your videos from early on and watched you grow exponentially. I love that your whole family is involved and that they can each feel how important their cultural contribution is for us. My parents have passed and your cooking will help me keep them alive. You actuay have three awards, two from KZbin and a new baby! Congratulations on the both!

Wow...congratulations!! It's been a while since I've tuned in, but I'm so glad you guys are getting the recognition you deserve. I found this channel during covid while I was in college away from family. I had to consistently cook for myself for the first time, and I found myself struggling to make the most basic dishes that I used to eat everyday. I'm so grateful to have happened upon your videos, which explained so clearly and SO patiently to a fellow Cantonese Chinese American how to make the familiar foods, while delivering the comfort of family and culture that I didn't realize I missed. Thank you for your work in teaching a generation of immigrants how to stay in touch with their roots and accompanying me through my time learning to be on my own.

Your channel is one of my favorite channel. Not just for the fantastic cooking skills by dad, but the way the whole video put together. Feeling the love flowing in your family is so wonderful. I am so happy for you, and congratulations on all the awards! Best wishes to your new chapter and all the wonderful endeavors!

one of the things i dislike the most about social media is how so many people put on a facade to try to impress or "influence" others. The refreshing thing about your whole family is that it's so genuine - you, your parents, kat seem to chat and interact in the videos probably not much differently to your daily lives. as someone with immigrant parents who like many others show their love through food, your story touches my heart along with i'm sure many others. it's so nice to see you guys being recognised, and i'm certainly going to grab a copy of that book once it's available.

I am sitting here with tears of pure joy running down my face. From a small idea to document your dad's recipes for your own kids and maybe a few watchers on YT - to a 1.5M+ strong global community that has been invited into your wonderful family and to two (well -deserved) James Beard awards. Thanks to you, your amazing parents, your wife and kids and your team for what you do. While I was unable to do the same for my dad prior to his passing (also a Chinese chef) - this channel helps fill that gap.

Congrats! Very proud of you and your family. When my mom passed, I felt so sad because I never got a chance to learn Cantonese cooking from her because I left for US as a teenage for college and my mother in law cooked for us while I was working. I kept on thinking why didn't I know Chinese cooking, there was a void in my life but at the age of 65, I am now learning how to cook with Daddy Lau. Thank you for all your efforts to teach us Cantonese cooking. You have no idea how you changed my life. I can actually Chinese food now thanks to the Lau family.

Awww this made me tear up! Congratulations Randy and your team! My husband is South African Australian, and he has taken an interest in learning how to cook these homestyle canto meals because of your videos. Sometimes I catch him repeating Cantonese words as he's watching them and you have no idea what that means to me. Thanks for sharing these recipes and the community you've built.

During the time of my dad's illness, he cannot cook for himself anymore, through straining myself remembering recipes my dad has also once taught me, led me to discover your channel. I took comfort and watched the videos even when I was not cooking/researching recipes, but because Lau reminded me of my dad but much kinder. This helped me cook for my dad where he will eat according to his preference. Your contribution to the food world is much needed, not to continue generational recipes, but also the ease and accessibility you bring so phenomenally well, should be the standard.

A true comprehensive Cantonese cooking cookbook would be amazing! I'd buy that in a heartbeat. You and your family are not only passing down Cantonese cooking to your future generations but also to other families like me and my kids who want to preserve that culture in our lives but don't have the knowledge to do so. Thank you!

Randy, I know there are a lot of food channels out there, but I was so happy to find yours because there is a warmth and authenticity that I sometimes struggle to find from others. I bawled watching you get recognised at the JBA and I hope your parents realise what a great honour it is! Analytics are important especially when you have to worry about paying the bills for a bunch of people, but definitely don’t forget how many people have watched your videos, tried your recipes, subscribe to the channel. I think social media sometimes dulls our perception of numbers because we keep seeing growth and forgetting the people that you’ve already inspired. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

I love seeing the Chinese, Cantonese specifically, culture being showcased more and more. My one fear is that the culture will die as the generations move on. We need to pass on how to cook these foods, how to speak the language and how to continue the traditions. Cooking with Lau is helping to preserve the culture, and I love it. It's been fun to see this channel grow and now receiving two awards. Tremendously deserving of the awards. Congrats!

In reading these comments, I'm struck by how similar many of our stories are: Immigrant parents sacrificing for their kids, dads working at Chinese restaurants while cooking amazing food for us at home, parents passing away before they could share their culinary skills, us yearning to reconnect with our parents and culture through Cantonese cooking. This shared experience and community, brought together by Made With Lau, touches my heart. Thank you Lau family, and especially Daddy Lau (who reminds me of my late dad -- his Cantonese speaking, his skills, his humor, his joy with his grandkids), for enriching our lives far beyond cooking.

When it comes to Chinese food, so many of the new restaurants are Szechuan, and the access to Cantonese restaurants are shrinking. So it’s very meaningful to preserve Cantonese recipes in an accessible way. The same could be said for Teo Chow recipes and other regional variations that are not spice forward. Thank you for doing this.

Flushing is almost only 福卅Foo Chow cuisine replacing HK Cantonese cuisine (owner retirement). Also, reflects the dichotomy of latest immigrant trend. For authentic Cantonese HK cuisine: Vancouver, Canada. Fast food style and banquet style. And anything in between. Due to their immigrant policy.
