You did good. Had a Robinson I flew to the Factory for overhaul, Flew great - The company later went out of business and I found the financial records , Well I knew the Robbie was one of the 1st the company had, But I didn't know it had 6,000 hrs on it... I flew it to Robinson for its 1st overhaul ! Records Logs are only as good as the owner operators honesty ... Hats off to you.

I usually go flying with an iPad and SkyEcho - thanks to your example I now will make doubly sure both of those electronic aids are fired up before I even read the first line of the checklist. I cannot spare the time / lack of attention once the engine is running!

Hey Kenny, great video, incredible learning experience. However, literally a day after I watched your fst video on this, I experienced an over speed on start up in an R44...ugggg!!!! Now I have a question. You say you're insured for this. I think you say you're payin' 2/3s of the cost. The owner of the flt school I go to says that's not possible. Can you tell me how you've got insurance for this and if you can plz let me know who insures the 44 you had the over speed event in?

I had to pay my deductible which was $20,250.00 and insurance paid the rest. So it's fact, the person that told you it's not possible is wrong. For over 10 years I have insured through www.southwestaviation.com

I was surprised as well that your insurance helped you out. As far as I know, with the overspeeds we've had, I think it all came out of our pockets... Perhaps that was by choice not wanting our rates to go up ( even more than they naturally do )...

BTW, instructors should be careful in flight teaching hydraulics off - the extra force required to move the collective gets some students gripping the throttle so hard that they can prevent the governor from doing its job, and they can also inadvertently twist the throttle. Not the situation you experienced, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

It seems the blame for the overspeed is being focused on lack of hydraulic. But really wasn’t it the manual override of the throttle against the governor? That same thing can happen with hydraulic on. I think you’re really beating yourself up about the checklist but actually this could happen if you’re distracted by anything while a student incorrectly applies throttle. For me it’s a wake-up call on how vigilant instructors must remain at all times.

Thanks for the feedback. I have had plenty of time to think it over. If the checklist would have been followed correctly step by step the event would not have happened. Your correct as well I take responsibility for not catching the student advancing the throttle. It is a learning experience exactly why I shared the story. Your right it's a wake up call on guarding that throttle.

Are you going to pay the in flight deductible or the ground damage deductible? I suspect the ground deductible which is typically much lower. Glad things are working out for you!
