Club coach Craig Moore talks about the difference of process versus outcome, and how a seismic shift in his coaching outlook made all the difference in his team's abilities and attitude.
It's critical that as a coach your emphasis is on doing things right, not on getting points. The hardest thing to do as a coach is to focus on the process and not focus on the outcome. If a young athlete misses a serve, don't focus on the error. Focus on why that error happened: Was the player nervous? Was the approach too slow? Did the elbow drop too low?
When the focus of your coaching shifts to the process and not the outcome, the biggest improvements in your team's ability will occur. It will show your athletes that you're invested in their improvement and ability to evolve, and not just the end result.
