Like your innovation. We installed 8” hardy plank (cement product) and butted to 1.5” respawn Doug fir trim. This was 25 years ago wish we could have used pvc as we live in California and have to keep replacing this stuff due to termites. Rain is obviously not an issue.

Sashco Big Stretch... the only sealant I will ever use. It's $8/tube but worth every penny.

Loving your channel. Really interested to see in a couple years how your sealant-free system is faring :) my old house is basically made of wood, sealant and paint and LORD I am tired of battling wood rot & the constant wood re-finishing.

Interesting! Love hearing your thought process. I too don't love the manufacturer's suggested methods with lots of sealant, but I also am not a huge fan of J-channel. Still something I'm thinking about! I did similar rabbeting on the back of trim when I last replaced windows, that's definitely a good call - things look awful when they don't lay flat.
