The 86 or BRZ can be the best financial mistake or one of the least hurtful, most enjoyable ones, compared to most other cars. The "cost to fun ratio" this platform offers is near impossible to match. This is one of the platforms that makes the most sense... or contains the least amount of non-sense... compared to bigger financial non-senses out there.

The most satisfying car purchase I've made. As a daily driver I don't need more hp. It's baffling to me that anyone other than someone into drag racing would be thinking about hp when driving it. How... proportionate it feels going into a corner versus exiting feels so *right*. Best part of the day is driving to and from work in it, I'll drive a different route often just for the sake of it. More expensive, less mpg, heavier, less balanced - any of that wrecks the gestalt of the perfect production car.

I’m in the brz more then the gt3. So true, powerful cars don’t teach you about momentum driving. I did relocate the battery to the trunk. It’s an almost a perfect 50/50 balance.

The way Robert connects with the Apex GT86 is so similar to how I feel about my FR-S. Mine is also setup as a light track build (coilovers, BBK, bushings, oil cooler, LWFW, 195 whp), and primarily used for track days and canyons. Completely understand when Robert says he wants to keep the GT86 long-term despite having owned faster cars. I may end up doing the same, although it'll be interesting to see how the second gen compares.
@BoredEngineer3 жыл бұрын
One of the main reasons engine oil cooling might subjectively work is the OEM strategy for the ECU in dealing with it. The engine has an oil temperature sensor and when too hot, power is slightly reduced to protect itself. This can account for the perception of reduced power overall, as it is nothing obvious like a reduced redline we get on other cars. I run a BRZ in Brazilian climate, fully stock and I must say even spirited driving on Mountain Roads on a mild day get's the oil around ~140C (as per cluster graph indication). But with the ECU countermeasures it just won't go past that, even putting non-stop 1h, lap after lap on a hot day, though you then feel the power loss more noticeably. It's still a bit of a concern for me, I run Motul's 300V 5W30 to be on a safer side but am still looking around for a good oil cooling offer. By the way, I actually booked this BRZ last year with you guys but sadly it was on an elevator when I arrived and I had to drive the Cupra :/. Thanks for opening up the garage and the blunt discussions, good content!

there is a trick to this car - quick taps on throttle pedal between shifts (up or down gears) so as to create by ear a helpful rev match to the whole synchronicity between engine, transmission, and driver. helps me a ton to smooth out the gear shifting on my BRZ. i do this instinctually. it's a matter of the car and driver to learn each other's subtleness.

@boblast55823 жыл бұрын
I can see the car not being driven hard by your average renter... but the Nürburgring being a momentum track, especially on a low power car like the 86, means lots and lots of full throttle. with nothing cooling the oil its just getting hotter and hotter every time you're at WOT. But I guess if you change the oil often its not a huge... in my experience the 86 oil temp stabilizes around 135C on track (not 'ring). Thats a bit on the high side but still safe...

Initially the GT86 was released in the US market as the Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ. When the Scion brand was discontinued in 2017 Toyota began selling the car with a Toyota GT86 badge. Scion was a failed marketing experiment in the US. It was meant to be Toyota's young customer tuner brand but most people who purchased Scions were actually older people looking for less expensive cars. I was a "Toyota Guy" in high school when Scion was introduced and none of those cars appealed to me. I wanted a MKIV Supra or SW20 MR2. Not a 1.5L 100hp car shaped like a box

When the GT86 first came out I worked at a Toyota dealership, we had one as a demo car. When I drove it, I wasn't impressed, felt like it was just a bit underpowered. Do you think it feels better now with the remap and shorter diff ratio? Like not underpowered anymore? (Didn't really know how to ask it in English properly, hope you understand what I am trying to ask.

For the Ring it's perfect. For other tracks it's probably still is meh.

Thats what lots of people felt with it. This car shows its true face at the limit. Most people wont reach that limit on the street id say.

@@99Lezard99 yup car needs to be at a circuit track to see what its really all about... streets you cant be doing full limits

@@patrickbateman7122 Oh! Please install a higher flow air filter, catless headers, and a good tune if you can. Makes the car way way torquier and lively at low RPM

Why during a wet laps would wet conditions/rain trigger all the lights on the dash to turn on and turn off and disable the assistance? The upgrading of the brakes? also are they 17x8 17x9? what offset? alignment specs and why? What are spherical/solid bushings maintenance life vs oem vs aftermarket rubber bushings? pros/cons of going all spherical.- Thanks

9.0x18 ET38, fit plug and play. Why? Because the 235/40-17 fit perfect 9inch and also the car. Important in Germany: TÜV approved

I was curious about the alignment and settings to see how the ring setup compares to STX class in US SCCA autoX. See this thread below. www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134039 So your are running 9.0X18 ET38 wheel on a 17' tires? is that even possible? Also how did you arrive at 235 vs say 245 or 255 width tires?

This is an underpowered car, but people keep crashing it... Seriously, I've got a GT86, and this is the perfect car for learning how to drive on track, it is literally a joy.

If I wanted to build a gt-86 just like yours, do I go to MR or should I make my own spec for Latin-American tracks? I'm from Guatemala, love the videos

That is why Apex need more RHD, I use a manual everyday, so know how to shift, but it is oddly different in a LHD, so I go to Dales or smoking Rays for rentals. maybe Apex don't have many UK customers.

I actually came over to drive the GT86, but it's just after an engine rebuild and then it's out for the day :( Can't wait to be able to come back for it, cause I only drove the short bit from apex to track parking....

Does the car not also have a different clutch and flywheel? I own a BRZ had and the car had engine failure and checked what other cars I could buy but quickly decided to get the engine rebuild. I am still in love with the car after five years :)

One of these is the only thing that would entice me away from old BMW's that i love to drive. My problem now is i've become addicted to the torque my mapped 330d pushes out so the lack of it in the GT86 might be disappointing. I really do need to go drive one, maybe this one next year when i visit the 'ring 🤔
