OUR SONS' FIRST TIME AT THE BARBER SHOP!! ❤️

Our sons had their first visit to a legit barber shop yesterday and it was such an absolute blast! We have definitely found our new spot! As we were driving there, Jude looked at Ethan and said, “You should get a Thor faux hawk!” and the level of insane joy that Ethan shouted with convinced us to let him. 😂 Every second of the two hours we spent there was such a joy and the boys had so much fun! You could tell how proud they were walking out with their new do’s! So proud of these boys and love our new friends at King's Barber & Beauty. They looked at the pictures the kids had picked out for their haircuts and immediately were like “Easy. That’s awesome!” with a fist bump to the boys. They seriously made us feel like we were part of the family and did an incredible job all around! The boys are already so excited to go back! Haha! I’m a white dad. Quite possibly the whitest. And the honor of raising two black sons is not lost on me. I am humbled by that incredible privilege every single day. At the same time there are some things about being their parents that Amanda & I naturally are challenged by. For example, the differences in our hair care and theirs. We have spent 9 years trying to get it right, and I think for the most part have done a good job, but today was a big day for us. We took them to a black barber shop for the first time and, man, I will tell you, I think we learned more about black hair care in the 2 hours we were there than in the 9 years leading up to it. It was like going to school. Beyond that it was just amazing to see these guys go to work with their insane level of artistic expertise and the incredible quality of work they do. Jude, Liam, and Ethan stepped out of that barber looking like a billion dollars and you could see them glowing with pride. So grateful for days like today. And for new friends!

Stephen Miller ....this made me tear up...I think forever learning and trying to understand things we don’t is an incredible way to bridge the gap! I have talked to God more in the past week and a half than ever before and have really been trying to educate myself! I have always felt that because I treat everyone the same and raise my children to do the same that I was doing my part....I have learned that sadly however that’s just not enough bc not everyone takes that same view! This is what we call a family a true father and mother. when we accept the flaws of adopted kids and try to improve those flaws instead of throwing them out of the family is a real family. I like watching their videos coz they define the humanity, family who teaches the real meaning of love. They have 2 black kids, one disable kid and still they love them equally. I think he mispoke. I work with children/young people mostly with serious challenging behaviours. Most of them are within the fostering system, get moved from home to home and find it difficult to get adopted. I can only assume he was referring to those kinds of children/young people.
