Happy to hear that you have recovered from Covid, it can be a difficult thing. Alix and I always enjoy your Top 5 video and this year is no exception. We stayed at Kekuli Bay and Rock Creek Provincial Park last year. We enjoyed both because of their clean facilities and proximity to rail trails.

Wells Grey July to August can be your worst camping experience where, if you've never done it, you will learn the MOSQUITO DANCE. We too wondered why we had such a nice spot by the waterfalls, and the rest of the campground was almost empty.

That would definitely make it less pleasant! We have been there twice during that time and have never a significant issue, but it was after quite a dry period..perhaps we were lucky (plus we do use a device to repel the bugs). The Pyramid campsite doesn’t seem quite so damp as the others as well.

@hikenrv We went a previous time to Wells Gray Campground and really enjoyed it and the offgrid restaurant they had there. There were so many mosquitoes the second visit that you could open your hand and then close it and get more than a dozen mosquitoes in your hand. Our Sprinter van RV usually keeps mosquitoes out, and once we have zapped the ones that got in through the doors, we can sleep close to mosquito free. Not that night. We left the campsite the next morning at first light, and we think everyone had left during the night before us. It was really that bad.

I am surprised Porteau Cove was not on your list. My very favorite is Mule Deer. We used to picnic there when I was 4, over 60 years ago. We also really like Writing on Stone, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, and Shaw County Park on Shaw Island. Skihist used to be our 2nd favorite. looking forward to your Manning hiking video. Have you ever been into Poland Lake? That is a trail we have never explored. Nancy

Haha, we love to,visit Porteau (there in a few weeks hopefully), but not a lot to do other than enjoy the views! We also enjoy Writing on Stone, but haven’t heard of others, so thank you! As for Skihist; maybe this year it will open . And hopefully still nice. As for Poland Lake, yes, but so long ago can’t really remember much.

Shaw Island is the only campground that I will put up with pit toilets! Bill Gates has a place there. Smallest island in the San Juans serviced by a ferry. Lots of nice walks and my family likes to kayak there. Campground more set up for tenting. Nancy

You mentioned in this video that you were waiting until it warmed up a bit to return to camping. I have a Zion just like yours and wondering what experience you've had with camping in below freezing weather and how well the camper's fresh water system holds up in that weather. I've spent some overnights in upper 20s (F) with heater on inside (lower 60s F) without a problem but just wondering how low I might be able to go on the outside temp without the water system freezing up on me. Can you share any experiences you've had with that, if you haven't already in another video? Thanks!

Not too sure we can help as our experience is similar to yours. Typically we winterize if we expect cold conditions. The coldest we have camped without winterizing (so still water in our tanks) was -5c (23f), with heat on (in our case an electric heater), but it was well above freezing during the day and only -5 around 5 am. . No wind, which can make a difference. That was colder than we would prefer to camp without being winterized (so we were a bit nervous). We have camped in full winter conditions (maybe -7C (19f) at night and perhaps just below freezing during the day), but we were fully winterized so not really an issue. We doubt we would camp in any colder weather even when winterized simply as the van would be too cold, and the furnace would run constantly.

Thanks for the prompt and detailed response. I'm not a big fan of camping anywhere it's going to remain below freezing all day but will certainly plan on winterizing in that situation just to be safe.@@hikenrv

Of course everyone has their own preferences..our favorites each year vary dependent on where we got to and are frequently ones where we can hike or paddle. Let us know a few of yours…we are always looking for new places to go, especially if they fit into those categories.
