This is great from the club. For me personally the "Chelsea rent boy" song was never homophobic. I thought it meant that players go to Chelsea only for the money, that they are basically mercenaries, buy, loan, sell and here comes the next player etc. I never knew there was a a homophobic meaning to it as well. If that upsets the gay community then it should be stopped.

@yozzer123 Exactly. I havent heard it for years and it was only ever chanted by fans ( not just LFC fans ) at Chelsea. I always took it as a jibe due to the media stories at the time about male prostitutes in London ( gay or otherwise ) and the fact that at the time players went to Chelsea purely for the money. I never saw it as purely homophobic. Now if Billy Gilmour is gay , then its another matter.

Credit to the club for owning this uncomfortable long - held issue as a nation we've gained awareness into how minority groups feel. Just because a group is less in number doesn't mean they should be disregarded. As, Scouse Culture is about equality going AGAINST injustice. If, a Player is on loan why bring up their original club - it's lazy. Concentrate on Liverpool FC as anything else isn't required. Also, Sir Elton John specifically picked Anfield as one of the venues for his Farewell World Tour in 2022 due to the respect he has for the club and he doesn't support LFC. Let's not embarrass, ourselves - the club - the city.

So as far as I know the Chelsea chant was a response years ago to their fans calling us ‘bin dippers’ and throwing coins at us because we ‘didn’t have jobs’. It was never aimed at homosexual men. They still call us bin dippers but no longer throw coins. Couple of the lads I go to the match with are gay and we’ve never experienced any anti gay behaviour before, during or after the match in the pub. Never heard any anti gay chanting either. Maybe if Klopp and the other fella knew the origins they would be less inclined to think of our fans as homophobic. Definitely didn’t know that the Chelsea player was gay in which case I can see how he would have felt it was personal. Bless him. Such a nice lad. Hope he’s ok and someone can explain the origins of the chant to him

Well said. Liverpool is, and has always been, a family club, and songs decrying anybody who is out of the norm is not accepted by all the good fans. However, the terms "rent boys" can be taken out of context. It is not homophobic, although some of the idiots who sing it, seem to think so, it is a comment about the "renting" out of the number of young players Abromovic has bought for Chelsea (bought by him to stop them going to other much more successful clubs). So the man from LGBT is getting upset over a misunderstanding. Having said that Jurgen has said it is no longer welcome for the chant to be sung by Liverpool fans... so be it. Let's forget the song, we have much better ones to sing.

It goes back a fair bit longer to a Chelsea talent scout having been found in an uncompromising situation with a man. So the chant is clearly homophobic, suggesting than young Chelsea players must be ‘renting themselves out’ to get into Chelsea. It predates Abramovic by about 20 years. It isn’t as innocent as people want to believe it is, or are choosing to argue now that they’ve been called out.

Because the term "rent boy" is a slur for young male prostitutes(who are often gay) and there's history of this type of trade with Chelsea FC(as when a certain Chelsea man was caught in bed with a young boy) and the Chelsea area of London (then known for its gay scene).
