Everyone has a role to play in conservation 🎸. This hit song “Our Wildlife Resource”, a collaboration between South Sudanese artists and the team in Boma and Badingilo National Parks in South Sudan, was shown on national television SSBC TV and is being played across Boma National Park. In this song, South Sudanese producer Luke Paul Kileto and famous Murle singer Franco Korok are shining a light on the importance of protecting the country’s natural resources, for the benefit of the communities who depend on them.
The broader landscape around Boma and Badingilo National Parks is inhabited by many ethnic groups with deep cultural traditions and livelihood activities that are interwoven with the natural system they live in. Pastoralists, like the predominant Murle group, move with the seasons to find fresh grazing sites for their cattle and new hunting grounds. “Our Wildlife Resource”, which is sung in the Murle language, has become a popular hit and is making the rounds in various villages and cattle camps. The song not only familiarizes communities with the conservation work in the landscape, but also highlights the importance of working together on sustainable natural resource use and management. The team aims to distribute the song more widely via mini-SD cards in the future. Four other songs are being produced in different local languages, one of them in Juba Arabic.
