HEADFIRST and BACKWARDS Down a Waterfall!!! Kawasan Falls Canyoneering.

We had such a blast canyoneering down the Matutinao River to the famous Kawasan Falls! It really was so much fun...and beautiful! We loved it.
We woke up early (around 3:30) to drive near Moalboal where the Kawasan Falls is located. The drive was beautiful as we went up and over the mountains in the middle of Cebu and as we were near the coast. It was a rough and bumpy drive, which made Jake throw up. Thankfully he was just carsick.
When we finally arrived and got our gear on, we were off on motorcycles driving up the mountain. The lush mountains with the ocean in the distance were absolutely breathtaking. After our orientation, we hiked down the mountain to the Matutinao River Canyon. We were amazed at the color of the water. It was such a pretty aqua blue with a milky look to it. We started the fun on our adventures right away as we jumped off the cliff, slid down another, and even slid backward down a small waterfall. One of the highlights of this first part of the Canyoneering was jumping off a cliff that was seven meters high. We got to jump off a couple of times and even saw our guides do some cool flips as they jumped off. It was awesome and a perfect way to start our canyoneering adventures. Did you know that there's also a Canyoneering in Alegria. Back in the day, before the restrictions, the Cebu Canyoneering literally starts in Alegria and exits in Kawasan Falls in Badian. Basically, the place offers two types of canyoneering, The upstream and the downstream canyoneering. Of course, upstream is more physically demanding and may be suitable only for those that are really physically fit. For the downstream canyoneering which is just fitted for beginners. The canyoneering will run from three to four hours, depending on your power and speed. Based on the local tourism rules, the earliest group can start the activity at 6 AM. The latest is at 3 PM. Not to be confused with the canyoneering in Badian that leads to the famous Kawasan Falls, the canyoneering Cebu in Alegria is a different stretch of that same river, with its own beautiful sights, obstacles and challenges. Alegria is on the west coast of South Cebu, about 40 minutes from Moalboal or 3 hours from Cebu City. The canyoneering Cebu course in Alegria is further south from Badian and does eventually meet up with the Badian course, however you can’t just continue downriver all the way to Kawasan Falls. Back in the day you could simply start in Alegria and keep going until you reached Kawasan, but these days there are restrictions in place that make this impossible. Actually, you can still do both courses in one day, but you’ll need to exit the river at the end of the Alegria course and hike up the canyon back to the starting point. That was honestly the most tiring part - it’s steep. From there you drive to the Badian briefing centre before going back down into the canyon with all new gear and guides. You’ll also need to book two separate tours with Alegria and Badian authorities. It’s a lot of hassle and we really wish they could find a way to make this easier for people like it used to be, as the swap takes up so much time.

oh really!? supertyphoon odette must have changed the canyon landscape i experienced the alegria one probably in 2015 the tallest jump was 3 storey building high (based on my guesstimation) the scenery in the alegria route was ethereal (it's like you're transported to an unknown universe, much like the movie avatar) we did so many slides & jumps that i lost track counting them, and eventually ended up in the kawasan falls (after more than 5 hours) it's an extreme adventure & a great fun moment for us but what enchanted me was the amazing beauty of nature in alegria that was truly "spellbinding"

I knew you ganna love this adventure that's why I suggested this the first time you travelled in the Philippines. Good that finally you did it. So much fun to watch you guys feeling the thrill of the canyoneering. Your Mom, Joe and Grace should have come with you and could have just went straight to Kawasan Falls for a swim while waiting for all of you there. No not all, only the Canyoneering in Badian, but the Canyoneering in Alegria is open to all tourists. The Canyoneering in Alegria is the upstream part of the entire Cebu canyoneering which is more physically demanding and may be suitable only for those that are really physically fit. Cebu Province Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, on Friday, June 2, 2023, temporarily closed and suspended canyoneering activities in Barangay Matutinao, Badian in Cebu, beginning on Friday until further notice. Cebu Governor announced that they will be demolishing the illegal structures within the defined easement zones of the falls and those abandoned structures and hazardous materials, most left in the wake of Typhoon Odette, around Kawasan Falls anytime soon.
