Ourique's Battle: A Turning Point In Portuguese History

The victory at Ourique gave Afonso legitimacy and confidence to continue expanding Portuguese territory and fighting for full independence from foreign powers. Within a few decades, he was acknowledged as King Afonso I and Ourique marked the beginning of over 800 years of an independent Portuguese kingdom. Today it is honored as one of the most important battles in Portuguese history.
