As a beginner, here’s some things I’m glad I did. First, I took extra fabric and extra bias tape and practiced sewing them together. I think practicing on scrap fabric first was super helpful. In addition to this, I also sewed the bias tape around the bottom of the dress before doing the top. The tutorial does the top first, but I’m glad I did the bottom first bc I got extra practice before moving on to the top. The top is curvier and more difficult. It’s also more noticeable if you make mistakes at the top than at the bottom. So I’d rather practice and get comfortable sewing with the bottom of the dress. Then I did the top and straps last. Anyway, this was helpful to me so I thought I’d share :) the tutorial is great though and super helpful!

This is my first ever time sewing. Here’s some things I learned from this 1. The thread you use matters. Like a lot. Don’t buy sewology. I have learned the hard way lol. 2. It’s ok if it’s not perfect. Don’t stress out. 3. Look at the manual to know how to thread the machine. just finished this dress!! first one i'd ever made! instructions were sooo easy, took me around three afternoons (including figuring out the sewing machine for the first time). @lisazantke Жыл бұрын
If your algorithm has randomly shown you this video and you are scrolling through the comments, looking for people who have tried to make the dress: I did make the dress. A short version and a long one and I had so much fun doing it. I am an absolute beginner, so I get easily intimidated by complex instructions. But this video is so detailed and explains every step so beginner friendly that I had to give it a try. What I learned during the process: - fabric is actually more expensive than I thought - the quality of the bias tape matters a lot (it can end up looking a bit cheap if you choose the wrong one) - sewing makes lots of fun and wearing something you actually made from scratch is pretty nice so if you are still not sure whether you should try it out or not: just do it, give it shot. I am really grateful that I have stumbled upon this video and I will continue to sew from now on :)
@micah3k Жыл бұрын
hi! not sure if you'll see this because this is 6 months late, but what type of fabric did you use?
@lisazantke Жыл бұрын
hey! I am not 100% sure what it's called. I think it's a cotton polyester blend, like the fabric basic t-shirts (the ones that are a bit stretchy) are made of. I went to a store and looked at the different types of fabrics, so I would recommend doing that. I hope that helps a bit! :)
@Terpsichore052 ай бұрын
Hey there :) ik it's been a year since you replied to the other comment - oops lol - but do you remember what bias tape you used? Thanks in advance xx
@lisazantke2 ай бұрын
@@Terpsichore05 Hey :) I think I've used some satin looking bias tape and it really elevated the look of the dress. If you're planning to make the dress as shown in the video (black fabric and white bias tape) I'd recommend using bias tape that's a bit off-white (bc I made the mistake of using a really bright one in one of my dresses and it looks a bit cheap). Hope u have fun sewing!!

The length at the knee makes the cut a basic that does not age. I have one like this (knee length) that is in crepe covered with a veil, in black, since I m 21. (I m 45) and it s the most perfect black dress ever. You accessorize differently according the occasion. It s simple yet classy and to top it all… i never had to iron it. Wash it, dry fast and never a wrinkle even when pooled within a tiny space in my suitcase. With the right material, you ll have a best friend for life that is always just right.

Just finished making this dress. It is *beautiful*. I haven't sewn in a while and this was the perfect project to get back in to it. This tutorial and the pdf sewing pattern are so well made and wonderfully simple to follow. It took me a few hours over two days from start to finish, which is really great for my standards haha (~6 hours total). I went for the classic black fabric and white binding, and I'm now going to try to make a top from the same pattern and leftover fabric. Would be keen to try it in different colours and a shorter length (the original midi length is perfect, but may as well try it out because the fit is just soooo good). My partner is super impressed with how classy it looks and says it makes him want to take me out to a nice dinner XD Thank you Mai! Absolute queen

That's a beautiful cut and really stands out with the bias tape enforcing the curved lines. However, I would attach the bias tape in two steps. First stitching the short edge onto the fabric and then folding closed and stitching on the fashion fabric carefully on the right side just underneath where the tape attaches to the fabric. This way you won't have that visible seam on the tape itself. The seam will be running almost invisible right underneath the edge of the tape. Looks cleaner, but takes a bit longer to do.

Hi all! So I just completed this fab dress for my vacation! It came out really well and the fits was great. I made a few changes and here is what I did. I had this beautiful black expensive jersey in my stash and it was perfect and all I needed to buy was the bias tape. I felt my jersey and most things should be lined. So I found some very light fabric with the same properties as the jersey and made another dress. I joined them wrong sides together and basted. Then I applied the trim. The result was a more weighted fluid fabric with more weight so I did not apply the trim to the bottom but hemmed them separately. I looks beautiful!

i got a sewing machine a week ago, i had never touched one before but still decided to make this and it’s so cute!! I also made it in black with off-white bias tape. I was most scared of the bias tape but it ended up being really easy and fun, it was my favorite part! The dress look so nice! Sadly it’s full of mistakes, i forgot to zigzag stitch because i didn’t rewatch the tutorial and just forgot about stretch = zigzag, and instead of starting to sew the bias tape from peak to peak (for the back) i started at the side seam so i had to add another piece of bias tape, luckily i only did this mistake on one side, and the mistake is hidden below my arm anyway when i wear it... I also couldn’t print the pattern because i was out of ink but really wanted to start right away since i had bought everything already so i drew one using my measurings, so i ended up having to do side darts because my boobies are small and drawing your pattern when u have 0 experience isn’t the best idea. But on the brighter side, for someone with no experience, the dress turned out really pretty since none of my mistakes are really visible, the bias tape looks amazing because the stitches are neat which i didn’t expect, the decolletage looks SO good, and it’s just UGH so pretty still!! So happy about it. So if you’re reading this and you’re a beginner, you can absolutely do it, just don’t be like me and please do rewatch the video step by step as you’re doing it because everything i did wrong could have been avoided if i had paid more attention bc this tutorial is so amazingly detailed! I think i’ll make another one of these in a different color and length so i can make one without mistakes! Thank you so much Mai, i cannot wait for more tutorials from you.

Could even shorten it or use the same pattern for nighties or a 2 piece with shirts n the top like this. Or even tops for summer. I just live this style. Can't seem to buy them any place. I'd like to make a red one.😊 I have a serger brand new never used. I'm going to pull everything out, Tom, n set up my living room and my bedroom different, so I'm able to start sewing. It's been since high school n this is why I bought this machine. I'm so excited now. I'm not sure where mybreg machine is. So I hope I can use the serger for now. 😊 thank you you are very helpful. I'll post when I do my first one. 😊

Would you be able to make a video that explains how you made the pattern, and how we could modify or make our own patterns from scratch for our own measurements? I'm 6ft tall with a long torso so I always end up needing to extend the vertical measurements, and then having big boobs is a whole other nightmare to deal with, so I really need to learn how to make my own patterns cause it's the only way I'll get anywhere. This dress seems like a good simple beginner project for this so I would love to know how you did it!
