Out & About--Marion Davies and the Annenberg Beach House

Out & About is a series on GlamAmor where I take you to visit people and places around Southern California whose history reflects my passion for classic cinema. This episode takes place at the Annenberg Beach House, the former beachfront estate of 1920s and 30s screen star Marion Davies.

Yes, I show the timeline and evolution of the property more in my article on GlamAmor. Everyone told me the bridge had to come down once it became a public pool for insurance and liability reasons. Thank goodness the pool is still there...just spent a lovely day there a few weeks ago!

@howstons Well the Sand & Sea Club was still there (later 415 PCH), so that's probably how the pool kept going on. They had to remove the original bridge over the pool, though, once it became a public pool.

@GlamAmorInspiration You are welcome. I believe that Orson Welles wrote a glowing introduction to Davies' autobiography, exclaiming her many virtues and disavowing any similarity between his cinematic creation and her purported model, Ms. Davies.

@haslfree Thanks for your response! I DO love classic cinema and its history. And it's indeed tragic that Marion's magnificent mansion was torn down--what a treasure--but makes me appreciate what still remains even more. In answer to your question, Marion is reaching for the proverbial brass ring in that photo! :) This is my first video for Out & About and long to do another. He did indeed. I have the autobiography and he pointed out the many differences between the character in CITIZEN KANE and Marion. He also expressed tremendous regret that his movie negatively impacted her legacy.

There is probably NotHing Hollywood has glamorized MORE since its very beginnings than cheating! You gotta lotta movies, entertainment, TV shows and pop songs to complain about. 7 Deadly Sins. That's what Hollywood promotes more today than ever before in history.

Marion Davies is like each one of us made in the image of a holy God: gifted with a set of unique talents and a role only she could fulfill on planet earth. However the Bible warns us that sin “crouches” at our door and that we must learn to overcome it. Tragically, she did not choose to overcome an openly adulterous relationship, which did hinder what she gave to our world. God ISN’T mocked: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, only to loose his own soul?” We ALL reap what we sow: what cast shadow over her life was an intentional, ongoing adulterous relationship which hurt an entire family PUBLICLY. My hope is that she found the ONE, true & perfect Light who still lives: the ONLY ONE able to remove sin, conquering the death it leaves behind within ALL of our lives...

@@thevintagekittyBIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALCOHOL AND SEX. MOST THAT DON'T DRINK ARE LIKE THAT. PLUS IT WAS QUITE A LONG TIME BEFORE THEY BAGAN A RELATIONSHIP. IN THE LATE 60'S OR SO, WHEN WE KIDS WENT TO CAMP, OUR HOME WAS QUITE LARGE, SO WALLIS AND WALTER ANNENBERG RENTED IT FOR THEMSELVES & THEIR KIDS.
