I always really liked Christian Bale's character in this movie. A good, smart, decent man whose life fell apart after one bad, unlucky, accident. It's heart-breaking really, because you see he's humble, you see he's trying to do good, but what's happened has happened and you can't undo it. Fate doesn't choose sides depending on whether you're a good human being. Unfortunately. I still have the final scene in my mind, how he sits alone in his house. I always saw it as a symbol that he is haunted and resigned to his fate. He killed someone in an accident, because of that he lost the only girl he ever loved, because of that and no one looking after him, his brother went down a wrong path and ultimately died, and in the end he had to go to a really dark place and willingly kill (murder) another human being to avenge his brother's death. In this scene, you saw Russell contemplate whether to kill DeGroat, or not. It's as if he understood how heavy of an impact this decision will have on his life. But he just didn't have anything, no reason that would hold him back, no reason to let it go. If he had love and a family, perhaps, but then again, if he did, he wouldn't be in this place to begin with. So he decided to right this wrong, because it just was the right thing to do all things considered, more right than letting DeGroat run and Russell then trying to force himself into a happy life. He knew he would never be truly in love again, he knew he failed to protect his brother (not his fault but still), so he chose to do a thing that's dark, but that had purpose and meaning in his life. But in order to get there, he went to a dark place there's no coming back from and in the very last scene at the dinner table, he's just haunted, resigned. Accepting his fate, quietly running out the clock, understanding that his life has unfortunately gone wrong in too many ways for it to ever be the life he wants to fully live and enjoy. Perhaps he will find some measure of peace down the line, but he's a broken man. It's tragic, it's really sad, because only good human beings end-up this way. A selfish, arrogant or bad person would shrug everything off, but to someone who cares a lot about his and others' lives, it's crippling.

@1986Unlimited3 жыл бұрын
Yea. For me atleast, I'd say that maybe it's because under normal circumstances, the system would just arrest Harlan, and serve him justice in their own civilized, systematic way. Harlan would get to live, likely inside a prison, but would still have a small chance at redemption. And good as that is for maintaining order, it still undeniably robs control and closure from the person, whom it was very personal for and who would be the one ultimately living with the devastation of what was done. By killing Harlan Russel gets that closure, keeps that control, dictates life on his own terms and serves justice for himself..if only for that moment.
