If you have heard one Bowie song you have only heard one Bowie song. His work covers such a massive range of styles and genres - from folk to glam rock to funk to avant guard to art rock... pop etc...

You said it Dean Maynard, David Bowie was/is an experience. I am grateful to have been able to have grown up with him to have had the opportunity to take in the David Bowie experience. Deeply miss this artist. The world has lost a great human being.

It’s about a girl escaping her dull life in the cinema - though the song used the chords from My Way - In 1968, Bowie was commissioned to write English lyrics for the Claude François French song "Comme d'habitude". After his lyrics were rejected, songwriter Paul Anka rewrote it into "My Way", which was made famous by singer Frank Sinatra in 1969. Annoyed at the success of "My Way", Bowie used the song as a template and wrote "Life on Mars?" as a parody of Sinatra's recording.

It starts with the chords from "My Way" but Bowie takes the progressions in a very different direction. Look up Rick Wakeman Raving about Bowie's chord structure for this song.( he played the piano on this track) .

what a great reaction. No need for help, you got it and you felt it. Piano is Rick Wakeman who later joined the band Yes.

Totally agree it’s about escapism. But also: Even as she escapes, she’s being spoon fed boring pop culture cliches like fighting sailors in a dance hall. The “Is there life in Mars?” line might be interpreted in two ways, 1) it’s the ultimate cliche she’s fed by pop culture, or 2) amid all the trivial stuff, she’s pondering existential questions. Note that the second verse is slightly different than the first in that Bowie now seems to suggest that *he* is also just selling cliches in what he does. It’s the sad irony of the story - the futility of life (which the grand orchestration seems to evoke).

You must listen to more of David Bowie because he has such a volume of music, and experimental music was his specialty. Check out his “Low” album.

Actually I'd not heard the full thing before. There's a lot going on in that which you won't notice unless you know the memes of the time. The drums near the end are taken from Thus Spake Zarathrustra by Richard Strauss which was used in the opening credits and crucial points in the 1968 film 2001 A Space Odyssey, because of the way that music was used in the film, it became used to signify awakening to a new level. Also Dave Bowie's first big hit single was "A Space Oddity", so it's an interesting allusion. Life on Mars, Space Odyssey, (oddity), a new awakening? Quite a lot packed in there.

Rick Wakeman ( Later of Yes) adds so much with the piano on this track as a session man. If not already, you should check Yes out. A rich vein of musical excellence. But keep on with the Bowie. Every track on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is worth doing, maybe a full album reaction.

I got the same interpretation as you. Except I thought the girl wanted to escape everyday brutality in addition to boredom. But it's open to interpretation. And how many films are just a retread of the same old cliche ridden situations and dialogue, when you were hoping for something better? . Great reaction. Space Oddity next for another out of this world early Bowie experience
