Hi Garden Friends! Over the last couple of seasons, I have been editing my garden. Removing plants I no longer like, and replacing them with new plants I will enjoy more. Its difficult to pull out plants that you have nurtured for so long. But at some point we have to make the decision to keep disliking them or to pull them out and plant something we will enjoy more? Life's to short to look at plants we don't like. I replaced my Hosta with Ascot Rainbow Euphorbia. I replaced the Euonymus with some Midnight Sun Weigela. I also replaced white swan cone flowers that reverted back to the native purpurea variety with some Pretty Parasols Coneflower which had been on my wish list for a couple of seasons. Have you done something similar in your garden or are you thinking about it? Comment below. Last year I moved into a house with a large existing flower garden. I was so excited this spring to see it come to life. As the season went on the garden became massively over populated. I felt obligated to keep the existing plants. After viewing this I feel better about removing some just for the sake of space and also to put in flowers of my choice. Thanks!

Not sure how the previous homeowners did it, but they planted hosta and azalea and I found the deer wouldn't leave them alone so they're GONE! This fall, I'm on a mission to get rid of what they're eating and replace with more of what they're not eating. I hope this pays off! Time will tell.

Hi Steph, I totally agree with you, I have been editing my garden by removing and replacing plants for years. My only problem is I have had a hard time actually throwing plants away. I have a big yard, so I tend to move them to another spot. However, next spring, I will be definitely getting rid of some plants. Plants on my list are day lilies, shata daisy, rebeķia, and coneflower. These plants have quadrupled in size for me and I will be taking some sucker's out. I will definitely be trying the ascot rainbow euphorbia. My problem is at the back, I inherited black walnut trees when I bought this property, so due to the juglone in the roots, leaves and fruit. I am limited with what I can plant at the back. Sucks. I already have the donkey's tail euphorbia that's doing well, so I will try the ascot rainbow euphorbia. I tried the fire chief thuja that you suggested earlier this year and they are going fantastic in my garden.
@maureenmckenna52202 ай бұрын
Have shared this on this site before, but this is just a reminder of my own thinking. First issue, deer and rabbits. Second issue, Virginia steamy, often dry long periods in the summer. This past summer was a doozy, with three weeks of about 100 and higher, and no rain. So, animals and weather. I just don’t want to spray, cover or fence in plants that are dinner for deer and rabbits. It’s costly and discouraging, because they win and you lose most of the time. So, I have taken out lilies, hosta, sedum, hydrangea, roses. I have planted Double Play Doozie spirea, yarrow, Pugster Blue butterfly bushes and ferns in their place. No spraying and no eating. They are also drought resistant. Allium has become another favorite. It is costly and time consuming, but I am hoping worth it all for the peace of mind and simple good looks of a not munched on garden.

This video is perfect timing as I just took out very mature Little Lime hydrangea that was at least 5-6 years old and very full. I too was reluctant to do so as it was so healthy but it quickly got picked up after posting on my local gardening page. A young couple were thrilled to get it. She was so excited and it made me so happy to give it to her. It really opened the space and I planted an At Last rose in its place. The Ascot rainbow is such a great choice. I bought one 2 seasons ago knowing nothing about it just because I liked the leaf structure and boy oh boy has this plant performed. What a great surprise to see those lime flowers this Spring. Its remaIns perfect in winter and has gotten bigger than expected, about the size of a boxwood. Absolutely no maintenance at all, just a perfect plant in 4 seasons. I plan on replacing 3 nandinas in Spring with 3 Ascot rainbow euphoria. P.S. you always look so pretty in your dresses.

I am cleaning up flower beds for fall. I cut back lantana because it was taking over some new little shrubs. I pulled out some perennials in a different bed because they looked like a weedy mess. Marigolds and chewed on sunpatiens got yanked out also. I took out creeping phlox because the rabbits chew on it, and I pulled out 2 hardy hibiscus, which I love. They got too little sun, and the deer chomped off every single bud or bloom. Argh! I grow hibiscus for the flowers not the foliage. I also put wire trash cans over my little gold star rudbeckia to protect it from the rabbits. Fall is a really good time to edit the garden.

Steph, maybe I can return a favor for all the info I get off your channel. Take a tuna type can, or a solo cup cut in half. Put some holes in the sides of the can or cup to let the scent out. Dig a small hole next to your bunny feast plants, put a chunk of Irish spring soap in the hole then put the cup or can over it to protect it from being dissolved by rain or watering. The cup acts as an umbrella. You can cover it with a small layer of mulch or dirt to disguise it. The soap deters the bunnies. They seriously hate the smell of Irish Spring. It has to be the green type. Just replace the chunk occasionally. Hope it helps.
@ritasicari75182 ай бұрын
So, this really works then? I've heard it keeps bunnies and deer away but never tried it. Thanks for the tip.
@pooftiger2 ай бұрын
@@ritasicari7518 In general, yes it works. For me. They do love my mini daylillies. There are two factors that play in, though. Your bunny level. If you have a ton of bunnies it might not. Two, the other food sources. Hungry rabbits gotta eat. Even if they have to hold their noses. But for rabbits coming in just cause they find your ferns tasty, it does work. I don't know about deer. You don't need a whole bar, just a marble sized chunk and replace it occasionally to refresh the smell.

At one time, I had over 60 hosta plants in my hosta garden under a huge beech tree. Every year they would get big and beautiful, then the deer come by one night and mow them down to about 3 inches above ground leaving nothing but short stems. So, this year, I replaced them with Lenten Roses or hellebores and lungwort. Never looked back. Now, on to the macrophylla hydrangeas, UGH! This one is going to hurt, but not more than seeing sticks there, too. Plan to replace those with bluebeards, weigelas, spireas, etc. I will put a few of them inside my fenced garden so I am not without totally. Think of the money Proven Winners or other company would make if they had a deer resistant hydrangea!

I will also plant my daffodils there since the space will be opened up after I pull the asters.

Peachy colored Yarrow is lovely. I had a variety called tutti fruitti Apricot delight. But also, if you wanted a peachy fall bloomer, shefield pink mums would be pretty.

@@HookedandRooted I have that yarrow in another spot but is blooming much more pink than the picture showed. I wonder if they were mislabelled or my soil makes flowers look more pink than they should.

So strange- here in SWOhio, gomphrena is bunny food. I tried it several times and they mow it down. I moved it to pots and it thrived. Yours is gorgeous!

Same here in southern California, except I put them in pots and the bunny jumped into the pot to munch on them. Ask me how I know, bunny left his calling card in pot.🐇😢

Question: Why do you not like the hostas? Do they need more shade? More water? Have the deer nibbled on them?

I've been on the hunt for Midnight Sun Weigelia all season. Haven't been able to find it anywhere. Yours looks great.

Hosta's had a bad year everywhere. The slugs here and in Europe were crazy. If people like Hosta but hate what the slugs have done a simple fix is copper tape. Place it around the pot, ground and the slugs do not cross it. It also works for your Dhalia beds ❤

Yes, life is too short to keep plants no longer loved ....

Nope, I've always been plant ruthless, I have a huge vast acreage gardens, BUT I don't keep things if they don't really grab and hold my attention! Today, I was ripping out a heliopsis seedling that for several years I had loved, though it just grows tooo TALL and the blooms do not hold up to the end of the season as do some of the other heliopsis, soooo OUT it went to give way to a preferred plant!
