As someone who has worked in the water industry for almost 35 years and has preached water systems should be separated from the internet I appreciate this segment. Most systems are treated like cash cows and are not maintained properly especially when it comes to cyber security. Great show and informative.

Canadian here... just north of you in Calgary, AB, Canada... (City of ~1.2 million) We've been under water restrictions for 6 weeks now, due to a failed 50 year old pipe main. It has become clear that our elected officials have focused on DEI, ESG, virtue-signalling and bike lanes (it's Canada off the Rockies; we have winter 9 months of the year!) and grossly neglected the core utilities. We are also under attack, as the 'texas of the north' - Oil and gas producers, ranchers, farmers - as they weaken our ability to maintain our own standard of living, let alone assist the globe, as we once did, with cheap and clean food and energy. Worked at an international pipeline company when the Colonial pipeline hack happened, and realised just how much 'catch up' was required to meet TSA's. Sadly, your country and mine are both laggards from where they should be. Cheers for a great podcast.

I’ve inspected water storage plants for other 40 years. I’m in a water district that has only 350 connections and we are on an interconnection from another district that has 1000’s of connections. There is no concern regarding cyber attacks. TCEQ/EPA are more worried about making sure that the tanks are coated with NSF acceptable coats. I’m a retired certified inspector and the problem in my opinion is that the engineers do not have the desire to think outside the box. It’s just like your guests stated, they think that the ability to diagnose remotely is greatest thing since sliced bread. The problem with that is that the engineers are taught nothing about cyber security while getting their degrees and therefore have no answers to address the problems. In addition the Board of Directors listen and rely on the engineers opinion. It’s very difficult to get the Board to deviate from what the engineers recommend. Keep in mind that the Boards are made up mainly of people from the district, doctors, housewives/husbands, insurance salespeople and all other non- knowledgeable people. It’s going to take a massive breach and loss of life before this problem will be addressed and corrected. IMO

I've worked in the industry as well for over 30 years as an engineer on small to medium sized utilities, 99% of which are not interconnected with another system. Most of which, I'm more concerned with overall physical security of the facility. Alot of them are not seriously secured, you would be amazed at some of the crap that I've seen.

Then look at all the components that were targeted in stuxnet. Then look up which country manufacturers those components where they were hacked.

I have attended several briefings and I continue to hear the word "sophisticated attack." When the dust settles, it turns out to be poor hygiene, poor practice, negligence, and poor administration. Nothing sophisticated. Yet, all the suits take eat this up. I am fortunate that my boss shares these briefings with me and asks me, what do you think? I am able to share my honest answer and we harden our systems. I am not the one pushing go on these changes but do play a significant role in advising and consulting other dept to do their part. At the end of the day, if they elected to not follow recommendations then they have accepted the risk. It's not me playing the Information Security card. It's me playing the card to raise awareness, education, and provide solutions to address these issues.

The other issue to this is funding. You've got a water company, which might have shareholders, getting pushback when they have high 'admin' costs...part of which goes to pay for dedicated cybersecurity personnel. Same with any organization, keeping costs down is key...I guarantee if you go to the voters for a bond issue, to try and cover a 'maybe' scenario of cyber attack, they'll get turned down. The only time voters want money spent is when the tap is not working and then they want it fixed immediately. It's the same reason we're STILL building power substations 'protected' by a chain link fence.

It seems that the guys being interviewed claim dependency on a federal agency regulation or absence of regulations; however, with the US Supreme Court recently ruling that "Chevron" was unconstitutional because agencies were making policies and regulations without Congressional authorization, can we agree things should be done lawfully with a restrained federal government? This doesn't prevent individual States and utilities from taking independent actions to secure their business infrastructure.
@M9A1MAN3 ай бұрын
The problem is that the most likely attack IMO will be to the power grid. Why? Because you can take down multiple systems with one go. For example, you cut power, guess what? Most cities will run out of water anyways because electrical pumps are needed to pump water to the cities or homes in higher elevation. A lot of food distribution systems are reliant on computers for logistical purposes. Cut power, no food in the markets. Not to mention it'll cut off pumps at the gas stations so no more deliveries of food either. Attack on the water system is less scarier to me than an attack on the power grid.

"We don't need electricity." Really? There are 16 critical infrastructure sectors. 15 rely on the 16th to function. The 16th is electrical. Water systems absolutely rely on electrical! What does he think powers the pumps, a wood fired steam engine? He shot his credibility to hell with that statement. Geez.

Seems like DHS is the org that shud be requesting notification of incidents, collection of info on those incidents and forwarding it to hamlets, villages, towns and city, state authorities and recommending possible solutions be investigatred. Seems like with the complexities of laws and authorities, that's about all you can do, and it strikes me as that is a large part of why they were created. If nothing else, it'll make them aware.

hello Andy & friends, here comes the info: why people drive in front of your window playing child games. They don't check it up. They have their childhood phase. In that moment they play. You or me are not involved. It is our state of mind and adult. Those get it not done. They playing around with panels. I don't agree with that. They excuse with that. That is also no possibility, because even a child is not allowed everything, more ..., it is less allowed to them, because they are kids. Saying: we wanted to look at it or something ..... is dangerous! They kill. Than they kill as kids. Now , they are terrorists. That is simple.
